Button to change the position of the tab bar
-
I work differently with the tab bar depending on the situation. The tab bar is usually at the top, but I often need it quickly at the side.
Currently, I always have to go to the settings to customise it.It would be great to have a button in the UI that switches between the set positions of the tab bar,
e.g. Top<>Left -
@sdtbluethink In Settings, Keyboard, Tabs, you can assign shortcut to the four possible tab position.
You could create two command chains for Tabs Top and Tabs Left, and add buttons to the toolbar for each, but two buttons seems like an ugly solution.
-
@Pesala Thank you. This will probably be the interim solution for now. I set it up like this earlier.
-
@sdtbluethink Have you taken a look at mouse gestures? You can move the tab bar to the top, left, right and bottom with them. For instance, have right click swipe down and left and move the tab bar to the left immediately.
-
Hey, thanks. I also tried it today with the mouse gestures. Very practical.
I also tested the command chains. It works great there too, but you need a little more space.

This is a fair request that enhances the ergonomy and functionality directly from the GUI, it should be done with 1 button, circulating the Tab Bar with every click, or providing a pop-up to choose from.
Extra buttons, keyboard shortcuts and mouse gestures are (not so effective) workarounds, so this deserves a vote from all of you imo.
-
@npro Where would you put the proposed button? It is not ergonomic if it moves depending on the position of the tab bar.
-
@Pesala In the Address Bar I suppose. Also this should be an option in the Settings, section Tabs of course, not default.

Hi, I am not against this request but if "workarounds" exists they will not be implemented from the Vivaldi team.
Before one move the mouse to the button I have this done with a mouse gesture already, buttons are not effective.
I would die if I had to use the Back button hundreds times a day without a mouse gesture. -
@mib2berlin said in Button to change the position of the tab bar:

Yes but this is different, because these workarounds are not good as
a) one can forget the shortcuts easily
- because of using too many in general or
- because of not using them too often
b) there can be not enough "sane" keyboard shortcuts if you use Vivaldi for many more stuff, - you would need 4 extra shortcuts here- leading to weird combos (like Ctrl + ] , or using Shift/Alt additionally) that can easily be forgotten
c) there are not enough "sane" mouse gestures for adding 4 more, particularily if someone uses mouse gestures for many things
d) 4 extra buttons via command chains is visual clutter
All of these can easily be solved on the other hand by a single, user-friendly button, provided as a tickable option in the Settings.

@npro Look what happens when you move the tab bar from top to left. The Address Bar moves up into the Title Bar.
One button could toggle Top/Left but there are four positions, so one needs a four-way toggle or a drop list.
This is just not ergonomic.
There are a lot of shortcuts and mouse gestures. I am sure that most users forget which one does what. The truth is, if you don‘t use a shortcut frequently, you forget what it is, even if it is carefully selected to be mnemonic, e.g. Ctrl+Shift+T and Ctrl+Shift+L, (Ctrl+Shift+R and Ctrl+Shift+B).
I am with @mib2berlin here; it probably won‘t get done because there are several easy workarounds, but I have been wrong before.
