21.12.24 | Sync'd Data Lost + New Encryption Key

Device names are missing under the cloud icon's drop-down menu since the return of sync.
The names are still intact on the devices in question, but are no longer displayed.Is there a known fix for this?
-
@ianmacd
Hi, if other users can reproduce it, I cant.Vivaldi 7.0.3495.27, Opensuse Linux.
Please check the windows panel if the names are there. -
(I think my issue is different from Vivaldi Sync service coming back online and people with new installations missing their previously syncʼd data, but feel free to merge this into that thread if it's more appropriate.)
I woke up today to my Vivaldi 7.0.3505.121 for Android 13; SM-A715F Build/TP1A.220624.014 (last updated on 14 December) having forgotten all Password Manager passwords other than the Vivaldi Account one..
https://i.ibb.co/SKg0yMN/Screenshot-20241222-141319-Vivaldi.png
.. and now Iʼm afraid to start Vivaldi Desktop for fear itʼll forget local passwords there also.
Should I just wait?
Vivaldi Android reports “Sync: Inactive” and tapping Manage prompts to create an encryption password.Shouldnʼt the sync service coming back online just mean that it may have forgotten some stored data, but data on usersʼ devices is safe and untouched?
PS: cookies are still here, so I can access several recently visited online sites; local bookmarks are still there; notes are still there; Synced Tabs is empty, and Iʼm pretty sure I could see my other devices tabs there even during the outage

@mib2berlin Interesting.
My screenshot was of the same panel as yours, but as you can see, the device names aren't shown on mine; and it's the same across all of my devices, including a brand new device added only today.

@ianmacd
Yes I see, I added a another Windows device and it show all other devices.The only way to resolve this is to delete the remote data on the sync server, then the device list is wiped.
If you do so you have to re login on all devices.
What's about the windows panel? -

But given that the sync service was restored only yesterday, and that a new encryption key was needed to resume syncing, I must have already started again yesterday with a brand new device list.
It's not clear that wiping my data again would solve the issue, and given the risk of accidental data loss, I am very reluctant to casually delete the remote data, in case that blank slate then syncs to my master machine and also removes my local data.

@ianmacd
Deleting the remote data doesn't delete anything local, I have done this many may times.
But with this chaos the last few days I understand your consider.
I have no other solution. -

Passwords remains on 3 checked profils on Android.
Check at

I have nothing showing up there:

@mib2berlin Well, I trusted your experience and tried your solution, but it has not solved the issue.
After adding a second device to sync, this is what I see on the first device:
As you can see, the name is still blank. -

Check your V Version is up to date.
Close session, restart and relogin.Check Passwords again.

@mib2berlin Interestingly, the sync node browser does see the device names, so they are known. It's just that Vivaldi refuses to display them.
-
@ianmacd
You can report it to the bug tracker but I can't confirm it internally.For information on how to report a bug, see this URL: https://vvld.in/how-to-report-bugs
Once that is done, please share the bug number (beginning with VB-).
Add your vivaldi.net username, please.
On the form, you can add your email address. Once submitted, you'll get a confirmation. You can reply to this with any logs or further info.Cheers, mib

Just because the devices are in the node browser, does not mean they're active. It just means your system knows about these devices and they existed at one point connected to Sync.
You can see the last time the device entry was modified by looking at the
MTIME
entry in the JSON.Devices not connected to Sync for a period, I believe two weeks, will disappear from the "Send To" menu.
Since the remote server data was reset, you'd need to sign in again on all connected devices for them to show up.

I deleted all of my sync data today, so the node browser was empty at that time.
The only devices pictured there now are the ones I have manually added back this afternoon.
So it remains curious that the node browser knows each device name, even though Vivaldi will not display them in the cloud icon's drop-down menu.

So it remains curious .....
And I am more curious how you can have those icons ; when hovering the cloud icon on the top right corner, I have a poor "Synced Tabs" or a popup with a QR code when I click on it ?! ( Vivaldi 7.0.3495.18 (Stable channel) + Windows 10 Version 22H2 )

During the Sync outage my Desktop Client reset back to a September 2023 version. (search history and all). However my Android Client was fine and had all data up to the outage.
After the outage, everything Synched again... except it deleted all passwords. On both devices. Now I do not have any Vivaldi saved password.
-
Thank you Vivaldi for completly removing all bookmarks, tabs and passwords. I literally didn't do anything in the sync settings the past 6 months and since yesterday everything is just gone. Entering my encryption key doesn't do anything as well.
Truly one of the most incompetent developer team I've ever seen. I don't know which junior developer implemented this garbage ChatGPT code in Sync but how is this feature even able to touch my passwords? First you removed all user data from the server (okay fine) but then it automatically overwrites my local data in the devices because it wants to sync them with the empty server data?! Like any developer with an IQ of 50 would sense a major bug here and you guys were like: "yea this is fine".
I know sync is not a backup feature, so deleting the server data doesn't matter, but then downloading the empty data and replacing my current files with it is just borderline retarded I'm sorry.
Switching to Firefox now.
