When the address bar is hidden, let Ctrl-L/F8 activate it temporarily.
I've been trying to declutter my browser UI, and realized that I don't really have that big of a need for the address bar, which I suspect is the case for many people who are using some combination of mouse gestures, speed dial, quick actions, or the bookmarks panel. The thing that stands in the way of completely getting rid of the address bar, however, is those infrequent instances in which you do need it: to copy the URL, or to go to a different site on the same tab, etc. So adding an "address bar on demand" facility with Ctrl-L/F8 would solve this quite elegantly, similar to how the "Show status info overlay" option elegantly allows folks to completely disable the status bar without any major downsides.
Also note that I'm not asking for a shortcut to simply toggle the address bar (which is already possible). That still requires you to perform 3 KB shortcuts whenever you need to focus on the address bar (enable the AB, Ctrl-L, then disable the AB).
This issue was brought up previously here, here, here and here as far as I'm aware.
I would really appreciate it if the team considered this. This would not affect the everyday user's life in any way whatsoever, and would be a delightful convenience for people looking into de-cluttering their browser

@Xan_ No problem, drag to select the start, shift + click to select the end. Far easier and less error prone than extending long selections with the scroll wheel while holding down the LMB
Afaik majority of people use index finger for lmb and middle finger for rmb.
They would have to always move one or other finger to scroll. With three fingers and three buttons, why would anyone use only two fingers?
-
Hi @Pesala, it seems like this is in response to a different feature request?
-
@Pesala I must admit I also find your mouse-handling a little unusual.
Myself, and I think most people (I will try to observe this now! ), use the index finger for left button and middle button / click-wheel. My middle finger is always resting on the right button. The ring-finger is used in opposition to the thumb to grip the mouse.
Before you say it must be hard to switch between left click and middle/wheel... it isn't - it feels completely natural on most mouses (mice?) since it's just a couple of millimetres between the two.
Edit: and I've just tried the three-finger way and on this mouse it is actually much more awkward to scroll with the middle-finger than with the index finger. The position is just "wrong" for that movement of my middle finger, while I can scroll further, quicker and more accurately with my index finger.

it's just a couple of millimetres
It's actually more than a centimetre. My mouse is 5cm wide with 4 cms between LMB and RMB.
I can scroll further with the middle-finger than with the index finger - it is 1 cm longer. I grip the mouse between thumb and little finger. A light grip makes mouse gestures easier. The index finger is already over-used for left-click, which is far more commonly used than right-click or middle-click.I understand why it's hard for users to change the habits of a life-time, which is why this should be an option. If it's hard for you to adapt, then it's also hard for me to adapt to a different fingering method.
-
@Pesala Now it's all clear. You hold your mouse in a quite unusual way. I don't know any person who would use three fingers for each basic mouse button. As I said - perhaps the design of your mouse makes it easier for you to hold it this way. On my mouse, it would be rather inconvenient.
Now if you take a look at pictures of people holding mouses, you'll find that the vast majority of them uses only two fingers for clicking the basic mouse buttons. I think that's the main reason behind designing the "switching tabs with scroll wheel" feature this way. Actually, I don't know of any software to require using LMB and the scroll wheel (or MMB) simultaneously, because for the majority of people it would be impossible.
Additionally, using the "hold LMB" + "do something" combination creates more issues on the technical side since it could interfere with selecting the text, as @greenenemy pointed out. I don't know how hard it would be to implement this feature though, maybe we're just exaggerating...
But I'm afraid that due to the fact that your habit of holding the mouse is very unusual, your chances of getting such feature are pretty low...

@dLeon
Because sometimes You can change Your mind and decide that things You do in a Incognito mode should stay longer...
I have similar problem really frequent... For example I have to suddenly restart my PC and have 80 tabs in Incognito window... and I hate that I have to bookmark them to restart PC / update Vivaldi / ...This feature could be very useful and sounds reasonable to me

It also sounds like a very odd request to me - you want to save a record of a page which has deliberately not been keeping a record.
If it is saved in the session then it is by definition not incognito.
I was thinking about suggesting options like migrating pages into/out-of incognito mode - but that simply blurs the line of private/public and renders the whole concept pointless (since any migration means data is getting stored somewhere and it would get very messy trying to delete things like cookies which have been used in an incognito session but which might also be valid for normal sessions!).
I think the only way round it is to have the option to save only the addresses of open incognito tabs (presumably encrypted but still with a BIG warning that doing this is insecure). Then when you open the session you can be prompted to open those addresses again in new incognito tabs or delete them from the session file.
-
@mossman The other thing I'm wondering - why would you have 80 incognito tabs open in the first place?!? For banking, legal, work stuff etc. I can't imagine you'd need to keep lots of tabs open all the time. There's only one other thing I can think of where you might open several at once (pr0n) - but would you really need to keep all those tabs intact at the next restart...?
-
If a URL is typed in a pinned tab a new tab will be opened instead of loading the url in the pinned tab.
-
@dLeon I think this sums up why the feature should exist.
@DarkWiiPlayer said in [bug?]Saving a Session in Incognito.:I don't really see a point in this behaviour. Incognito mode is there to prevent the browser from storing data like cookies or browsing history, but if the user makes the decision to bookmark something or save a session, that should still be possible.
I think incognito should be like a whitelist system: not discard everything, but discard those things it isn't explicitly told to save. -
@mossman
Maybe I have odd working mode
I use strongly Incognito on my company workstation. It's not my home computer so I really don't like to leave any cookies, private browsing history, open sessions and so on...Why Incognito window? Because it gives me conrol and easy way to handle all of my private data.
I don't like to mix private and work stuff. And I don't like to wipe all of my history / cookies / etc. Only some of them.
For me it's the way to divide my tabs into groups:- "I like to wipe any trace of it in the future"
- "I don't care / I will need this"
Why 80? It's average tab count for each my Vivaldi window xD (and that's why I love Vivaldi )
Yes, for me restart is a big problem (I just don't shut down my PC until I really have to).
But sometimes it's urgent that I have to install some picfe of software and reboot...
And I hate to make a mess with "bookmark all tabs"...If there will be some kind of functionality like temporary incognito session saving to file protected with password - it could be a blessing for me...
Or maybe it could be possible to create some kind of special session type? Like "persistent incognito"? -
@BriHecato
My boss have nothing against browsing for private stuff.
I just care about my security and I feel uncomfortable about leaving without control cookies wiht logged Facebook / mail / another mail / Githubs / forums / ... on not my machineAnd I don't like to move this things from incognito mode.
Nor nuke my history
I just like that my incognito window can survive Vivaldi (or PC) restart when I want
Or have some kind of selective clearing private data feature that uses some kind of defined rules
Like for example "always wipe all cookies / history entries for Facebook" -

Have you tried install Vivaldi as a Standalone version for your private stuff? Then you don't need to use incognito, and can save sessions, etc.

@Pesala Maybe it's a good idea I didn't think about this at all Thx

easy way to view used webpage certificate
Now, left click on the lock icon on the left of url, show menu and another click on the "more information" go to some google info webpage (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95617?visit_id=0-636208465357721238-1920783552&p=ui_security_indicator&rd=1)
It's not good, if you can get more information about used certificate.

Make the 'add bookmark' popover more keyboard-friendly
- When the bookmarking pop-over appears (because I hit Ctrl+D, or because I clicked on it), then the Name field should have keyboard focus
- Given a field in the bookmarking pop-over has focus, I can hit <Tab> and <Shift-Tab> to cycle the focus along the fields and controls.
- Given the Folder dropdown has focus, when I start typing the name of a folder, then that folder is selected.
- Given the Folder dropdown has focus, when I hit <Space>, the dropdown drops down.
- Given the Folder dropdown is dropped down, then I can choose a folder by typing or using the arrow keys.
- For bonus points: when I type a folder name, drop down a list of matching folder names that shrinks as I type.
