Privacy Without Compromise: Proton VPN is Now Built Into Vivaldi
-
@0x49D1 new partnerships are often a big deal from a marketing perspective, regardless of the technicalities of implementing it
-
It's not part of the latest Snapshot Version, right?
-
@Chheang I found this official answer on Reddit, which I assume still applies
Yes, Proton VPN free plan has the same security and privacy features as the paid plans. The paid plan only has additional features and more servers to choose from.
We understand that the phrase "Free VPN" might raise some red flags, but Proton is dedicated to providing privacy and free access to the internet around the world, which is why we will always have a Free plan. The Proton VPN free plan is funded by the subscriptions of our paying users.https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/14otx73/comment/jqn0qrq/

@oudstand I have not checked myself, but I haven't seen it mentioned at least. Partnerships like these are sometimes released handled different from the regular release process for business reasons
-
@oudstand Right.
It's a new Stable release (7.3). -
Does 2fa setup for vivaldi account or changing backup email affect ability to login using vivaldi? i clicked the vpn button and logged in with vivaldi and it worked but then setup 2fa and changed backup email to a better email and now it shows an error "Something went wrong - Internal server error" and a "sign in with proton" button when i try to use it
-
@Chheang, Proton VPN is OpenSource, and free to use, without datalimits. But the free version has only a limited amount of servers and features.
-
@internetuser: It uses your backup email to connect, so what you are experiencing would make sense
-
I get this on restart
then this notification appears
and I have to press cancel in previous one,
only then the webpage loads -
@3dvs The Authentiction popup is known issue.
Just ignore it and hit Cancel. -
@0x49D1 The native VPN button that can be moved to any toolbar independent from the extension container, and the fact that it installs the extension, is the integration on the software side of things. I believe it’s a plus it doesn’t come preinstalled directly, because people would complain about it.
-
But cool news. I acurately use proton vpn but not in browser.
-
Epic! Vivaldi is the best browser for work and personal as a content editor and web dev there is no browser other than this one and now it got a vpn built into it, will need to test it but well done!
-
@jon this is truly awesome, makes things so easy for those presently without a VPN.
I already have a ProtonVPN account (excellent partner choice) and was just about to ask if there was a way to configure this feature to work with my ProtonVPN account when I realized there is! I just click the settings in the Proton window, logout, and then login with "already have Proton account".
It was easy enough with the ProtonVPN windows app, but having a single button in the browser makes things even better.
-
This is interesting.
Do you run the VPN at all times? My only experience with free VPNs is very low speeds and bandwidth limits.
-
@rpsgc
Hi, during my test it is a bit slower than my paid VPN service but much faster than other free/pseudo VPN's.
No bandwidth limits to my knowledge.Cheers, mib
-
@16patsle: is this normal that stable is 7.3 while the latest snapshot is 7.2?
-
Does this version still support Manifest V2? Do “unsupported” extensions still work?
-
@0x49d1: Well there is collaboration, which is why you can sign in with your Vivaldi account and do not need to create a Proton account first.
-
@mtaki14: Minor correction it gets installed when you 'click' the icon the first time.
If you never clicked the button just right click and remove it. If you already clicked it once, go to vivaldi:extensions and also remove the extension.
