07/12/24 | Sync Doesn't Work
-
@Cretec What happened at the end of October what that the Sync server needed urgent emergency maintenance, which could not be done while the Sync server was online, and that was an operation that would take a while (more than a day, as it turned out).
In the current case, which is unrelated, something happened yesterday that overloaded the servers (and AFAIK still do), and the sysadmins are still working to figure out what happened and how to fix it.
You can follow the current status at https://vivaldistatus.com/ .

@yngve, I'm sorry for the bad weekend you have ahead, I hope you find where is the fail soon
-
Is there anything like a timetable for when sync might be expected to be working again? I was planning on doing a migration from one primary personal system to another this weekend and expected to be able to make use of Vivaldi sync as one of the little things that would make such a stressful operation just a little bit easier; instead I've been stymied by this seemingly unprecedented extended downtime, and it's rather exasperating.
-
Hi,
Expect it during workdays. The problem happened on Friday late, being it seems more difficult than other times, seems reasonable to expect that it will be addressed after the weekend.
-
1.- Now you know, when you have sync problems, check the status at
https://vivaldistatus.com
2.- If the status tells you that there is a server problem, wait patiently one day if it is during the week and three days if it is friday.
Wow, second time for a very prolonged sync downtime in just over a month. This is not good and is concerning.
3.- Don't make such a fuss, it's not so terrible.

@yngve Good to know, but obviously still something that should be looked into. Neither should be able to bring down a system like this. It should be proper failover and load balancing to avoid things like this. Would take some re-architecting, for sure. I have had to do this for our systems we run, that cannot go down.
In any case, I know everyone is working their butts off to get this current issue fixed. It was just annoying as it stopped some of my guys from being able to get into their systems as they were on different computers.
@barbudo2005 it is when it literally stops people from working. General personal use absolutely correct. Everyone's use case is different. We had to resort to some, not so secure, methods to get my team going.

This post is deleted! -
I assure you. You are not alone.
At least I made a blog post out of this. Maybe another one later when Sync starts to work, to report how my attempt at migration is going.
-
Please thank the team for their hard work.
Could you also ask the team about situation re creation of a new sync account. Should I stop trying for now until all clear is given?
It was a perfect storm for me purchasing a new laptop on Black Friday sale, picked up from store a week later and started migrating about the same time this issue started.
Actually this increased load on sync servers could be a direct result of this year's Black Friday sale. (Apparently BF spending this year is a lot more than previous year, according to NZ local media.)
Thanks again for your teams' hard work.

Seems that replicating sync databases onto new database servers for better load balancing could take more time than expected by us normal users.
So we have to wait. -
Sync is not working since... 5 days!!! What's going on? Why this huge bug with sync? This is a real failure and this is absoulutely NOT good for Vivaldi's image... How the best browser on earth can experience such a terrible issue with basic synchronization???

@omxy
Hi, just check the link on top for more information. -
@edycrp Beg pardon, but could you try that in English, please?
-
@yngve Sorry. I forget that the traductor of Vivaldi is not too good.
@yngve The syncroniscmo says it's working but it's still the same, but hey, we'll have to wait, the problem I have is that I get used to having all my passwords in Vivaldi from all the places I go, so I have another disk from where I was able to get the keys until yesterday, but I put a new disk on my PC and since the synchronization doesn't work, I want to enter the passwords that I got from the previous disk and I follow the steps to activate the flags, but that flag that the tutorial says to be able to enter the backup passwords that I got from the other disk, now it turns out that it does not exist.
Now I'm tied up by this synchronization problem. What can I do to install the passwords or at least bring the passwords from Google Chrome, which has some of my most important passwords, to Vivaldi, importing the keys from Google Chrome itself?????? -
@edycrp Keep an eye on https://vivaldistatus.com/ (I am not involved with the work, so don't really have more info than is on that page, anyway).
Regarding new disks, as long as it is installed in the same computer and same user (and OS) and you still have the old disk installed, you should be able to just copy (or import) the user data over to the new drive (it is new machines, new users that cause problems).
-
@yngve The Vivaldi page that shows the status of the synchronization services is not fully up to date, as it says that the synchronization services are only working at 90%. Unfortunately, I imagine that is why the passwords are still not working.
I copied all of Vivaldi from the other disk to the new one and put it in the Vivaldi directory after installing the new Vivaldi, but it still does not show the passwords for the websites when I enter.
I will have to go back to using Edge or Chrome because they do not have the synchronization problem, the only bad thing is that I am already getting used to Vivaldi since it came out until now, but I never thought there would be a problem of this kind. I will stop next time.
Greetings and thanks for answering. -
@mib2berlin Very disappointing that the system has been down this long. The sync is the most essential function of vivaldi for me. I use so many computers in my job, not having the sync working is causing me a lot of issues. I am having to use another browers until this is fixed. Which made me realize how slow Vivaldi has become. Crazy!!
-
@jsuttor
Yes, this is the longest outage ever, last one was one day or something.
Vivaldi cut the sync response from minutes/hours to seconds with Vivaldi 7.0 and dashboard widgets are synced like normal tabs, I guess this add a huge load to the sync servers.
Much more than the team expected. If Vivaldi is slower than Chrome or Edge, except the startup time, something is wrong.
I use many browsers for testing and Vivaldi is on par at least, often faster on all my systems.
Some users report--disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess
help a lot for performance, on my systems it does nothing.
Chrome extensions and third party security software can slowdown Vivaldi to crawl.
Edit your desktop shortcut and add the flag like:You can test
--disable-extensions
too or add both.Cheers, mib

@yngve This is still an issue. And sadly for me, this started moments before (or maybe after) I reinstalled windows on my PC. The only backup I have is on my Android where all is sync'd but Vivaldi devs forgot to put an "export data" option on android.
