High CPU usage when doing barely anything
-
@brianrubin Nvidia can be used. I have Intel i5-7500 & NVidia GT 710. But my PC that is a tower, not a laptop, and i always use the NVidia.
I do not know how priority of GPUs is on you system.
Can you deactivate Intel GPU in Intel GPU Settings Panel or in BIOS?
https://helpdeskgeek.com/how-to/how-to-switch-between-dedicated-gpu-and-integrated-graphics/
https://www.digitalcitizen.life/set-default-gpu-windows-11/On the Laptop can you please Settings → Webpages → Hardware Accelereation
Is it active? -
@DoctorG Okay, so I restarted the whole laptop after making sure the setting was on, and now:
Graphics Feature Status
- Canvas: Hardware accelerated
- Canvas out-of-process rasterization: Enabled
- Direct Rendering Display Compositor: Disabled
- Compositing: Hardware accelerated
- Multiple Raster Threads: Enabled
- OpenGL: Enabled
- Rasterization: Hardware accelerated
- Raw Draw: Disabled
- Skia Graphite: Disabled
- Video Decode: Hardware accelerated
- Video Encode: Hardware accelerated
- Vulkan: Disabled
- WebGL: Hardware accelerated
- WebGL2: Hardware accelerated
- WebGPU: Hardware accelerated
- WebNN: Disabled
So we might be okay?
-
@brianrubin Yepp, now Hardware Acceleration (short HWA) is fine.
Now you can check if the CPU resource problem is sill active on the laptop.
-
@DoctorG Okay, so I added the feed back in Vivaldi, and it's spiking the CPU again:
I'll restart the laptop again and see if it's still doing it.
-
Yup, still high CPU usage.
-
Removing the feed and restarting the browser gives me normal usage levels.
-
@brianrubin And with the feed the issue is back?
-
@brianrubin Caan you please open Settings → Feeds , select the feed causing the issue and copying the address and post here.
-
@DoctorG Same feed as mentioned before.
-
@brianrubin Please, the URL! I do not know if we tested both the same feed!
-
@brianrubin Please report issue with Laptop to Vivaldi bug tracker.
tell them precisely about the issue, your hardware, the broken feed URL.
Perhaps teh devs they can check! -
@brianrubin Bye, until tomorrow. Too hot now at 19 o'clock European SUmmer Time with 31°C. Puh.
I leave my office. -
@DoctorG Apologies, it was this one:
-
@DoctorG Will do, thank you!

Same here, I found out today that disabling feeds (and calendar and email) solved my CPU usage problem with Vivaldi.
It was bothering me for some months, without knowing why, but today I was fed up and I took the time to investigate.I don't use calendar or emails modules in Vivaldi, but I use Feeds, and it seems to be the culprit. After disabling these modules, CPU usage ("Background page" process in Vivaldi used around 70% and above) is fixed.
Any clue why this issue exists ? It has been like this since I started to use Feeds in April, no matter the updates.
FTR, it is still happening with 6.9.3447.37. -
@megosu said in High CPU usage when doing barely anything:
It has been like this since I started to use Feeds in April, no matter the updates.
One/more of subscriptions could be broken or one feed in list has broken content.
My idea: export all feeds as OPML file, delete all subscribed feeds, import from OPML file. (not tested)
See menu File → Export and File → Import from Application or Files
https://help.vivaldi.com/mail/mail-feeds/import-feeds-from-other-feed-readers/ -
@DoctorG this could be a workaround, but how can we submit this bug to vivaldi team ? A proper fix would be best.
-
@megosu Export the OPML file, report issue to Vivaldi bug tracker and add as zipped file to report.
-
@DoctorG I just tried the following:
-
Feeds enabled, but no feed added: CPU usage is normal (very low)
-
One feed added (https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/pull/feed/product/91?): CPU usage rises, see screenshot, and persists even if I remove the feed. Once the feed is removed, I need to relaunch Vivaldi to get back to normal.
-
Another feed added (https://www.cert.ssi.gouv.fr/avis/feed/): same behavior.
It doesn't seem to be related to these specific feeds, do you experience the same issue ?
-
-
@megosu All is nice on my 6.9.3447.37 Win 11 23H2.
Tested with 6.9.3447.37 and added as feeds:

Which CPU/GPU do you have?
Which external security/privacy tools?
