Why not implement TOR instead of this functionality, as it is basically the same concept?
-
Privacy Guard! looking forward to the new version.

@mossman, there are certainly better alternatives, SPN, Snowflake, I2P.... but if you use it only to skip country restrictions in Videos or streamings, a simple Proxie can be enough, any free extension, like the mencioned CyberGhost can do this.
But for the need of real privacy in some countries with strong dictatorship or for journalists in these countries, a inbuild or extension VPN isn't enough, there is always a Desktop app needed, because it need to create the tunnel BEFORE the browser connect to the ISP server.I've used the Tor browser and - if I understand correctly - it is exactly as you describe; part of it sets up TOR routing then the rest runs a version of Firefox.
Pretty sure a Vivaldi version for TOR could work in the same way...
Edit: while we're on the subject, for secure messaging there's an interesting open source one called Briar - that uses TOR and (this I find quite intriguing) it can even facilitate secure messaging when there's no internet! - it will hold queued messages and pass them on to devices of your trusted users via Bluetooth and local sharing! That means peer-to-peer messaging continues in disaster areas and when there are political situations. I made an account but unfortunately I know no-one who uses it - I'd be happy to see this one get more traction versus big social...
Edit again: forgot to add that since Briar is a smartphone app, you don't need to be on a desktop to be using a TOR-routed browser...
-
@mossman More or less. The correct way to do TOR would be:
- a Live USB (Tails) with nothing saved on the machine;
- Tor Browser: a Firefox with settings modified to be secured... no scripts enabled, no telemetry and so on);
- Possibly, a VPN too.

I would much rather see effort being poured into the top requested feature running on for 6 years almost, rather than a proxy service. And the feature request im mentioning "can" be fixed with a addon .. so can a proxy. Kind of disappointed honestly.
-
@lyooth As a paid service to give Vivaldi more ressources?
Further development of extra features depends on financial and human ressources. -
@DoctorG Im not against this, I personally donate to Vivaldi when I can. I am disappointed in the choice of provider, I am disappointed that they would "outsource this". I hope this feature improves with the feedback, because it could have been so much better.

@lyooth The provider has distributed servers. That is critical to the service. Vivaldi cannot afford that at this time. The provider has also spent over a year developing the technology for the service, which required staff and investment.

Friendly reminder to please fill in the survey if you have been trying out this feature. It should be shown in the Privacy Guard menu after you have tested it for five days.

@marialeal Done

Didn't expect those great news. Never heard of Invisv. I thought it was something to do with Safing' SPN that have a similar raison d'etrê and also was build with security in and privacy in mind not as VPNs that weren't build with this purpose. there's too e. g. Cloudflare' WARP that also claims to be building different from VPNs (but in this case with speed in mind). So far I know that anonymizing networks share a similar protocol for managing connections. It seems that Insivs is a great product and I am willing to pay for it if Vivaldi get it on Android and doesnt bill more than e.g. Windscribe, and also if I can connect all my device to the network not just Vivaldi traffic. I know that Vivaldi chooses the best for its users and I trust Vivaldi. I expect many good things from this implementation !

Ah - didn't realise that's where it would be shown. Okay done.
To summarise, in case anyone's interested, it had no effect on my browsing at all (apart from being in different "locations" and one website which came back blank) which is both a good thing (user friendly - I could easily add an exception for that blank website) and a bad thing (I'm not going to pay for something which doesn't seem to do anything!).
Edit: I suppose I'll leave it running until the trial runs out, just in case there's anything else to report - but I'll be rid of it after that.

But I also don't want any notifications like Virus scanners do it. The thing is supposed to be working fine without hassle. But yes, some statistics like for the AdBlock might help people be convinced that it does something

Yes, probably a good idea. I don't believe it "protects me" from anything when I'm already conscious of online security practices, but maybe some alarming (real) statistics would convince me otherwise!
-
@mossman I just found out that it fails to load anything at all if - ironically - I'm using a real VPN!
I have to say that when things don't seem to work properly it's just another annoyance in the list I have to check:
- Vivaldi ad-blocking (occasionally causes problems, e.g. YouTube)
- uBlock origin (rarely a problem)
- is VPN on?
- Privacy Guard
-
Now we should test Vivaldi 6.7 RC 1!

One more friendly reminder, those of you who have been trying out the Privacy Guard feature, we would greatly appreciate it, if you'd fill out the feedback survey.
You should see a link to the survey in the Privacy Guard menu (click the button on the Address Bar) or you can go to this link
