Privacy Guard: Your Privacy Matters – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3319.12

Privacy guard: For the time being and bearing in mind that this is just a trial with limited functionality (most of all no location selection), I found it to be good. First it really hid my IP and second I didn't experience any significant speed loss. Since I am not familiar with the service I have to rely on Vivaldi team to assure me (as certain as someone can be) that this vpn alternative is really safe to use. If somebody knows where to find proper tests it would be useful to mention it here.

@nutcracker, you can check your data with this privacy thing on in Browserleaks and compare it with your real data. It shows what every site knows about you when you visit these.

I don't see a reason to pay for something which I can setup myself on my own VPS for free.

Some people isn't bothered about whether Invisv it's a VPN or a Proxy instead
-
@Zalex108, for what I use them for, I don't care at all if it's a VPN or a Proxie, since they work the same for this use, I only care that they have a good PP, TOS and enough speed for streaming, apart that they offer a server of the country of the Video I want to watch.

Why not implement TOR instead of this functionality, as it is basically the same concept?
-
Privacy Guard! looking forward to the new version.

@Catweazle said in Privacy Guard: Your Privacy Matters – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3319.12:
@mossman, there are certainly better alternatives, SPN, Snowflake, I2P.... but if you use it only to skip country restrictions in Videos or streamings, a simple Proxie can be enough, any free extension, like the mencioned CyberGhost can do this.
But for the need of real privacy in some countries with strong dictatorship or for journalists in these countries, a inbuild or extension VPN isn't enough, there is always a Desktop app needed, because it need to create the tunnel BEFORE the browser connect to the ISP server.I've used the Tor browser and - if I understand correctly - it is exactly as you describe; part of it sets up TOR routing then the rest runs a version of Firefox.
Pretty sure a Vivaldi version for TOR could work in the same way...
Edit: while we're on the subject, for secure messaging there's an interesting open source one called Briar - that uses TOR and (this I find quite intriguing) it can even facilitate secure messaging when there's no internet! - it will hold queued messages and pass them on to devices of your trusted users via Bluetooth and local sharing! That means peer-to-peer messaging continues in disaster areas and when there are political situations. I made an account but unfortunately I know no-one who uses it - I'd be happy to see this one get more traction versus big social...
Edit again: forgot to add that since Briar is a smartphone app, you don't need to be on a desktop to be using a TOR-routed browser...
-
@mossman More or less. The correct way to do TOR would be:
- a Live USB (Tails) with nothing saved on the machine;
- Tor Browser: a Firefox with settings modified to be secured... no scripts enabled, no telemetry and so on);
- Possibly, a VPN too.

I would much rather see effort being poured into the top requested feature running on for 6 years almost, rather than a proxy service. And the feature request im mentioning "can" be fixed with a addon .. so can a proxy. Kind of disappointed honestly.

@lyooth As a paid service to give Vivaldi more ressources?
Further development of extra features depends on financial and human ressources. -
@DoctorG Im not against this, I personally donate to Vivaldi when I can. I am disappointed in the choice of provider, I am disappointed that they would "outsource this". I hope this feature improves with the feedback, because it could have been so much better.

@lyooth The provider has distributed servers. That is critical to the service. Vivaldi cannot afford that at this time. The provider has also spent over a year developing the technology for the service, which required staff and investment.
