Vivaldi failed to launch on macOS 14
-
Shame Vivalid it doesn't work on Mac mini s it does work on my iPhone and iPad but I want a browser that works across all my Apple kit just as it works across all of our Windows machines, Android Phones and Tablets
I have removed Vivaldi from my iPad, iPhone and Mac mini and am using Duck Duck Go Privacy Browser for the time being.
I would love to come back to Vivaldi for the Mac when they get it sorted out.
-
Ok this is getting ridiculous. Deleted the vivaldi ios and and vivaldi browser on my mac. Moved on to Firefox and wont recommend Vivaldi anymore.
-
Uninstalled, did a fresh install of 6.4.3160.41, but it stopped working almost immediately.

I'm in the same boat. Going with Safari and Firefox on the Mac. Still using Vivaldi on the Windows machine as it still runs on that OS. Chrome on both platforms for Google hosted products (Gmail, Maps, etc.).
Doesn't seem to be much concern from the Vivaldi development community to get this fixed. Perhaps it's such a small subset of their user base that the resource required to overcome the problem doesn't make sense to allocate and it's easier to just let users migrate away.

I have been in IT for many years and am really no dummy but I tried 7 times to submit a crash report for my MAC OS 14.1 Sonoma Vivaldi opens and closes problem AND yet having filled in all the required fields I get the message
It looks like some information is missing. Please make sure all required fields are filled in.
They are all filled in. Oh Boy
-
That's quite a ridiculous situation. It is unbelievable that a bug of this level of severity is not addressed at all.

Hello everyone!
We're very sorry for this trouble and thank you for your patience. We're looking into the issue, but have had a hard time reproducing the bug.
We're wondering whether an extension might causing the issue. Do you use any extension? If you do, please share which ones, so we could test them. -
I am even more puzzled by the issue. I was able to open Vivaldi and quickly pin-it to the dock while it was bouncing. Now it works. Nothing else changed with respect to the 1000 other times I tried to open it. Weird. If I have more info, I'll update this thread.

@jane-n
Extensions:- Return YouTube Dislike
- MarkDownload
- Grammarly
- Notion
- Bitwarden
- Whatfont
- Wappalyzer
- AdBlock

It's incredible that for 2 weeks no one has dealt with this problem, which seems to be a massive one. What makes you smile is the fact that the Snapshot version from the same 6.4 build works without any problems.

If you still think an extension is suddenly causing Vivaldi not to open upon updating the MacOS, I could send you my list via PM.

I am running Vivaldi 6.4.3160.42 on Sonoma 14.1. It has been over a week since the last time I had to delete the Preferences file to get Vivaldi to open again. Unfortunately the problem happened again today.
Currently installed extensions:
1Password
Capital One Shopping (disabled)
Dark Reader
NordVPN
Save to Pocket
uBlock Origin (disabled)I will try launching from Terminal next time I encounter this issue and post the details here...
-
It did happen again this evening. I tried launching from Terminal to capture the output.
❯ ./Vivaldi [53261:259:1112/234121.305529:ERROR:downgrade_utils.cc(51)] /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots/6.4.3160.42 -> /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots.CHROME_DELETE/6.4.3160.42: Directory not empty (66) [53261:259:1112/234121.325395:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(154)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. A second try, just to be sure, still failed:
❯ ./Vivaldi [53286:259:1112/234133.130605:ERROR:downgrade_utils.cc(51)] /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots/6.4.3160.42 -> /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots.CHROME_DELETE/6.4.3160.42: Directory not empty (66) [53286:259:1112/234133.147642:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(154)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. Taking a look at the mentioned Snapshot directory:
❯ cd Snapshots.CHROME_DELETE ❯ ls -la total 0 drwx------@ 5 (userName) staff 160 Nov 12 23:41 . drwx------ 50 (userName) staff 1600 Nov 12 23:41 .. drwx------@ 6 (userName) staff 192 Nov 12 23:41 6.4.3160 (1).42 drwx------@ 6 (userName) staff 192 Nov 12 23:41 6.4.3160 (2).42 drwx------@ 6 (userName) staff 192 Nov 12 22:03 6.4.3160.42
After moving the Snapshots.CHROME_DELETE folder out of the tree, it still didn't work:
❯ ./Vivaldi [54152:259:1112/234937.127396:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(154)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. [1112/234937.442572:WARNING:crash_report_exception_handler.cc(235)] UniversalExceptionRaise: (os/kern) failure (5) [1] 54152 trace trap ./Vivaldi
After removing the Default/Preferences file, opening the app worked... It seems to have produced the same error message when it was not working, though.
❯ ./Vivaldi [54751:259:1112/235047.161649:ERROR:downgrade_utils.cc(51)] /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots/6.4.3160.42 -> /Users/(userName)/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/Snapshots.CHROME_DELETE/6.4.3160.42: Directory not empty (66) [54751:259:1112/235047.182048:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(154)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(163) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. Let me know if I can help troubleshoot in any other way when it reoccurs.

In the macOS console it might have the crash reports and might also have other info
For snapshot there is an update to that beta version (I did not see a fix listed for macOS 14 but would not hurt to try if you are testing snapshots)

The problem isn't there with the Snapshot builds- only the release version installed on top of one's existing Vivaldi build/files/settings/etc. Weird.
Snapshot builds open and run as expected. Release builds choke immediately upon starting and crash within a second or so.
If I could retrieve all my settings I'd start fresh with a new release build. Sadly, I can't open Vivaldi any longer in order to save everything. Very disappointing.

Same issue. Closes and then won't reopen.
Running macOS 14.1.1 (23B81)
M2 MacBook Pro (2023)
Vivaldi 6.4.3160.42
Extensions 1password, BetterTTV, Omnivore -
When, how will these problems be fixed?!? I have not updated my M1 MacBookAir for fear, I will lose access to Vivaldi. Is Vivaldi working on this or not? Nearly a month now -
-
@nedhamson I don't know about the progress of the issue, but I know the devs have been looking into it.
-
@jane-n I have to wonder why there has been so little communication - there must be a lot of users waiting for a solution.
