I refuse to start over.... Workspaces MIA
-
So, just built a new PC and getting everything normalized. I have data to transfer from my old PC's system drive and realized my Workspaces were not synced or showing on the new PC I should say. I tried to find a way to pull them off the drive in Windows with no luck. I booted it back up in the old box and pulled up Vivaldi, thinking I could just copy all the links worst case scenario. I have about 50 workspaces. However, it seems Vivaldi saved me the headached and just wiped out all the links. All my Workspaces are there but only 3 or 4 are showing links.
If it's going to be this kinda party I'm gonna stick my d.... eh, y'all may not get that. Please tell me there's an easy solution? have been really excited about how they have been working and recommending to people based on this feature. If not, China here I come.... you can spy on me all day....
Thanks for taking the time.

@smaciver Sessions don’t sync. You can however »save all as bookmarks« when right‐clicking on a tab and therefore save each workspace as bookmarks folder, then sync that to the new setup, create the workspaces and open each folder in the according workspace. That’s not really time intensive. Custom shortcuts and command chains are another matter. Migrating the whole profile folder is another option, but it’s not something I would do personally.

@luetage I don't use sessions so not concerned with them syncing or not. If Vivaldi Workspaces require what you describe, then Workspaces is not an accurate name for this service. They've been working fine for months and I can only assume an update wiped out all my URLs but saved all my Workspace groups. If there's not a way to pull that back, shame on Vivaldi for that. I'm almost finished moving to Opera One. I'm liking it so far. Mentally I already feel better.

I don't get it, how did you manage to make 50 workspaces? With that I mean, why do you believe Vivaldi actually saves them?
From what I understood, you currently can't manage them in the bookmarks manager. See this topic, this is how I envisioned that Workspaces would/should work. Does it make any sense to you?

What I don't like about Opera is that it's probably spyware. And you can't put the tabbar on bottom. But I'm sure their Workspaces feature is more mature.

@RasheedHolland I had that setting checked for saving but now when I go to vivaldi://experiments I don't see that option.
I use workspaces for projects. I believe they would be saved because that's how they work and that's what was relayed from Vivaldi. That's another reason I choose workspaces over sessions. Not to mention it's been working since they implemented it in the first snapshot.
I've got a few new workspace groups on my new PC and all have URLs. And yes, Startup with Last Session always has to be enabled. Vivaldi help me with then my workspaces weren't saving. I have one group on my old PC with 114 urls saved but most got wiped out. Not sure how.

@RasheedHolland Here's why I believe "Vivaldi actually saves them"... AND I QUOTE...
"When you close the browser, your Workspaces are saved automatically." <-- From the horse's mouth
The whole point of workspaces is to have similar tabs grouped in tab stacks for specific topics. Projects, shopping, researching new cars.. whatever. You may not use a browser like I do so 5 pages may have you trembling. But sessions isn't the answer and Bookmark Manager?!!? I'm praying that thing disappears one day, not my workspaces.
Why would the implement this grand feature everyone has been screaming for, only to delete all your URLs out of them? Fkn New Opera crashes everytime I fart.. I don't know what I'm going to do. Apparently nobody knows how to get them back which is another fail to not have a way.

@RasheedHolland By the way , I may have 50 workspaces all containing multiple tabs saved but the beauty of workspaces is, click on the default and it's a blank session until you start surfing. Those everyday tabs don't need to be saved. Close them or whatever, as you would normally. If I need to work on something I have a saved space for, I click on the menu, choose it and BAM! all my tabs are there and all still in the ONE browser session. Then the tiling comes into play and it's amazing to have on a superultrawide. No more multiple browser sessions. All contained.

@RasheedHolland I apologize if I sounded harsh. I read through your post and now I understand where you were coming from. I thought you were being sarcastic like I was dumb for thinking workspaces were saved lol. Did you get anywhere on your stuff? I'm not quite sure your goal. I'll read through it again, I just wanted to say that.

No, I indeed didn't mean it in a sarcastic way. So what I meant is that with my idea you would be able to save and manage workspaces without having to rely on Startup with Last Session.
So perhaps they could even make a workspaces bar, similar to the bookmarks bar. And from there you could launch and switch between workspaces, isn't my idea way simpler and handier than the current implementation, or what?
With my idea, you would have easily been able to manage your 50 workspaces, via the bookmarks manager or workspaces manager, and you could simply save all of your URL's related to different workspaces as an HTML file, which you can then export and import to any new Vivaldi install, if needed.

@smaciver I just saw this post by accident, looking through the forum to see if there's any advancements on Sessions sync. You shouldn't underestimate Sessions, they are actually the easy answer to your particular problem.
Here are the steps:
- Make sure Vivaldi is updated on the old PC (I imagine you have the latest version on the new PC)
- Go to vivaldi://experiments and activate "Enable sessions panel" on both PCs
- On the old PC, open the Sessions panel and make a new session (the + sign), and select "Include All Workspaces"
- On old PC, hit Menu->Help->About, look for the "Profile Path", and go to this path in the file browser
- Inside the "Sessions" folder, there is the newly created session (it should be named by the date and time it was created). Because there is no automated sync (for now, I hope), you have to manually take this .bin file and the sessions.json file, and copy them on the corresponding "Sessions" folder on the new PC
- On the new PC, open Sessions panel and you should have the new session. Open it (selecting "Open With Workspaces") and everything should be in place.
If you'll continue to use Sessions after this, be careful when checking "Open With Workspaces" option, it creates duplicates if you already have those Workspaces created.
Hope this helps, and also hope Vivaldi devs implement the Sync Sessions feature, to have this done automatically. Cheers!
