Getting warning for outdated/unsecure browser on Ebay.com
-
windows 10, 22H2. automatically updated and checked weekly for optional updates.
-
@DanZellman I use the same version of Windows 10, and see no such message. (See my forum signature)
-
So far it's only eBay where I get the message. FYI, AVG specifically reports support for Vivaldi.
-
I only have one extension, Acrobat.
-
@DanZellman Which version of Vivaldi are you using (see Help/About)
2) Why does your screenshot show "August 18, 2020" ??? -
6.1.3035.75
-
for the record, I was an Opera user until the end of version 12. While searching for a new browser, after 12 was no longer usable, I found an article on the origins of Vivaldi. been using it exclusively since.
-
I mention that because some of my bookmarks may go back that far.
-
Try the following:
-
Either:
-
confirm Settings > Network Settings > Report Browser Brand as is set to Google Chrome
-
select Settings > Network Settings > Reset Network Settings to Default
-
-
Restart browser and see if issue persists
-

There was another user getting the same:

No reply to the advice given so no-one's the wiser...I have an Ebay account, even though I never use it these days. I tried all I could to reproduce getting this "outdated" warning on Ebay, even going back to Vivaldi 1.0 (2015, Chromium 65), and still did not get it. In fact, Vivaldi 1.0 seemed to function just fine with Ebay.
My guess is this is some kind of "experiment" Ebay is doing, possibly only hitting some users or in some countries. The huge warning is annoying, but it has zero basis in reality. I also suggest taking this up with Ebay themselves. Create a support ticket - state you're running a browser based on the latest Chromium 114 and they should fix their broken client detection systems. Ebay is outdated, not Vivaldi.
My advice is to just ignore this "warning". It's a shame that small relatively unknown browsers, based on the latest version of Chromium, has to deal with this stupidity because of clueless web developers who do not know what they're doing

@Pathduck I also tried to raise an issue even if I knew the answer. Only solution is spoofing to what sites asks for. https://github.com/WICG/ua-client-hints/issues/342
-
@Hadden89 Yes, it's obviously abuse/misuse of client-hints.
But even trying with Vivaldi 6.0 (Chromium 112) which should be "outdated" and set to identify as "Vivaldi":
"Chromium";v="112","Vivaldi";v="6.0","Not:A-Brand";v="99"
I did not get the warning.Since you get the warning - what are your
sec-ch-au
headers? Here are the full from 6.0:
sec-ch-ua: "Chromium";v="112", "Vivaldi";v="6.0", "Not:A-Brand";v="99" sec-ch-ua-full-version: "112.0.5615.205" sec-ch-ua-mobile: ?0 sec-ch-ua-model: "" sec-ch-ua-platform: "Windows" sec-ch-ua-platform-version: "10.0.0"
In my default snapshot I have it always set to "Not A Brand" and still don't get the warning.
"Chromium";v="114","Not.A/Brand";v="8"
-
@Pathduck I didn't investigate too much but it seems there is a list of official UA-CH brands which is fetched by websites so, paradoxally an outdated client is not obsolete because fall behind the radar, while an upgraded one is blocked because is filtered out by webmonsters
-
@Hadden89 If you ask me, those WICG people should go jump of a
tall bridgesmall table. They're mostly Google employees anyway, no big loss."Valid use case" - sure, there's a valid use case for everyone to use the same browser as well, just imagine how much simpler it would be for web developers if everyone just used Chrome, or Internet Explorer!
-
Changing to Google Chrome did not work. resetting to default did. all good thank you.
-
@DanZellman Probably an ebay cookie already stored the unsupported browser information before the change. Btw, now it will work
-
This is the pop up I get when visiting Ebay:
"Oh No! Update your browser today! Starting June 30, your favorite sites won’t support outdated, unsecure browsers for online shopping. Update Now."
I clicked the "Update Now" link and got a list of the "updated" browsers. Vivaldi is not included. Will we have difficulties with Ebay in the future? Will Vivaldi be included in the "updated" browser list?
Thank you. -

@BriKyKo if answering the first time in a thread, do not forget to tell browser version and OS version (both see Vivaldi menu Help → About).
The current version is: 6.1.3035.84.
Select Vivaldi menu Help → Check for Updates. -
Hi sorry.
6.1.3035.84 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
I just updated today, so it is the latest version. I did visit the Ebay site after and the popup/banner of the warning was still there. Thanks.
