[Bug] [Important] Bright flashes
-
@luetage The dark switch also does not work on Pop! OS, at least not entirely. Oddly, all of the context menus are expectedly dark, but the splash screen is light. There is also the matter of the light flash when I open options and maximize the window. I am unsure whether this is related to the dark switch, but it could be, given the light flash appears to be the same color as the splash screen (light gray) and not pure white like the flashes that plague Windows and Windows software. Do you mean to say I can change the color of the splash screen using a CSS modification in a CSS file?
-
@taiga It’s a css style instruction in an html file. The best way to go about it is to write a batch script to make the change in the application file and to run it after updating Vivaldi. See instructions and example scripts on the modding forum board. And yes, menus are another thing altogether, they are styled by your OS and Vivaldi makes no changes.
-
@taiga the settings window doesn’t use
browser.html
, but insteadwindow.html
. changing the colour also there may fix the issue with the settings window. -
@potmeklecbohdan True, or simply use settings in a tab ^^ I have never seen a good reason opening a separate window for them.

As i know from the past, Dark mode with GTK themes is broken.
-
I am very disappointed about this ugly bug.
I use dark themes on my Ubuntu 22 and Debian 11, have enabled GTK in internal settings, and every time Vivaldi is started i get a white flash before the UI is completed.
I do not want any white, that is blinding and hurting my old eyes.
And i fear such issue could trigger people with seizures.I reported now to bug tracker:
VB-95858 "[Linux] UI shows white flash before dark theme is loaded" -
Hi,
Just to mention this happens on Windows as well, mostly using HDD, on SSD install is mostly dark always, in some case the white happened if the computer was busy when launching V IIRC.
Very annoying in any case.
-
@Zalex108 Oh, yes, with Vivaldi on a regular HD and on my Kingston NVM (for drive C:) i see this on Windows, too.
Bad loading of Vivaldi.
I will update the tracker.Running Chromium core is a big s.....
Edge 110, Chromium 111 has the issue. A Usability Hell!
Firefox 110 has no flash. -
-
@Zalex108 Thanks, i added this link to bug tracker as it could be related.

@DoctorG I use light themes with Vivaldi Stable and dark with Vivaldi Snapshot, so I really didn't notice it at first.
Confirming issue on Debian sid. Noticed the white flash with Vivaldi Stable. Also confirming it's present in Chromium 111.
The internal setting for Theme in Vivaldi, is on Classic (default).
In full agreement with your comment re seizures.

I'm using Archlinux with Openbox and I managed to fix this problem by adding "--force-dark-mode" launch parameter to the executable:
vivaldi-stable --force-dark-mode
-
The white flash is not fixed with dark mode on Linux or Windows. Annoying and bad accessibility.
Bad Chromium bug: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=1412787 -
people have complained about this apparent phenomenon for years in the forum in various threads, but it's always baffled me in that i've never seen it. reading down this current thread now, there seems to be a pattern of it arising in gtk toolkit desktop environments, not qt ones. is this correct? if so, then presumably that'll be why i've never seen the problem, in plasma. how odd.

I have seen such flashes in my Debian 11 KDE and on Windows 11.

oh. well then, i can't explain why i've never seen it, in eight years. maybe i've completely misunderstood the various historic descriptions of the symptoms' appearance, and/or when it occurs.
-
@ybjrepnfr Perhaps the bug is timing issue while creating window elements and a special issue with graphcis driver - who knows, the Chromium core has sometimes starnge bugs.
-
I am seeing this using all three of my installed desktop environments.
-
@edwardp After testing KDE, XFCE, GNOME i can confirm. That is a Chromium trouble, i can not see a issue with Firefox.
-
@DoctorG I don't have any special graphics drivers installed, both of my desktops are using the x dot org radeon driver.
