No idea, I don´t use AV software since 10 Years or so.
If you can it would be nice if you make a short step by step description, it would help other user a lot.

Well, now that you mentioned it, I do have some security software running on my Win 11 Home OS:

I have always had AVG free, but never had any issues with Brave bookmarks. But with Vivaldi, could that be a factor?

Chrome extensions:

uBlock origin
Privacy badger
ClearURLSs

I came across a YouTube video that recommended these three extensions for Vivaldi, so I installed them. I had never used them on Brave, and I never faced any bookmarking issues in Brave.

[EDIT] I disabled all three extensions in Vivaldi, but there is no change.

@Raindrops1 i have Adguard extension and it causes no issues , it's the AVG i think , maybe Vivaldi does something when using the bookmarks that makes the antiviruses do some jobs and lags

Hi again, extensions can cause issues in Vivaldi, disable all and restart of Vivaldi should help in most cases.
But some lurk in the background and then do their mischief.

About the Security software, exaclty what @khopr mention, Vivaldi try to write on the HDD/SDD and the AV software check this every time if any viruses are in the files.

I experimented further.

I think the hardware acceleration does play a major part!

But in addition, I also discovered some odd behavior:

When we click on the bookmark icon, its effect appears only when we click away from it. (e.g. we can click in the address bar. But sometimes this does not work. Then I click in the Search bar and then it works.).
When we click on the Remove button, in the dialog, its effect is not seen immediately. In fact, the dialog should close after this automatically, but it remains open. So we have to click on the Done button separately, at which point the bookmark icon in the address bar resets. Sometimes the icon does not reset even after clicking on the Done button. In that case we have to click in the adress bar, at which point the icon gets reset.

Please check?

Yes or disable it for a test, Defender jumps in automatically.

For the folder collapse I have no solution.

When I make changes on vivaldi://bookmarks/, I have to close then open this page again to see them.

The bookmark does not ger registered till we click inside the address bar.
The bookmark does not clear with Remove button.
We must press Done button to complete the clearance of bookmark. But sometimes even that does not work. We have to click inside the address bar or search bar (trial and error).

I see, something is blocking Vivaldi on your system to work correctly.
On OS level it is maybe a AV software.
To exclude extensions, settings and profile issues you can create a new profile > close all tabs > don´t change or install anything > test.

You can delete it later.

I added a new profile, closed Vivaldi with the old profile and restarted it with the new profile.

In this profile, adding and removing bookmarks was lightening fast and reliable.

Then I imported all the bookmarks. Even then adding/deleting of bookmarks works fine.

That means AVG and bookmarks are NOT causing trouble.

That means that one of the extensions is the culprit.

I plan to add the extensions to the new profile one by one and repeat the experiment till it starts misbehaving.

Could you please you give me any advice at this stage?

Did you try to disable all extesions and restart Vivaldi before?
Do you use Vivaldi sync?
The worst case is a broken profile, depends on how much settings and shotcuts you change it can be some work.

I have tried to disable the three extensions that I mentioned above (which are new for me). That didn't change the result.

BTW is disabling enough or do I have to remove the extension from Vivaldi to check its real effect?

I use Vivaldi only on one laptop; not on my mobile. So no sync.

If my original profile is likely to be corrupted, how do I create a new profile with least effort, and make it my default profile?

My bookmarks and passwords are saved anyway.

Delete the new profile and move your default profile folder to a save place. The folder is called "Default" and you find the path in the Help > About menu.
Vivaldi create a new folder at next start, import your bookmarks and passwords and you are set up.

Finally I found the exact problem!

In my last installation, I had tried to customize the bookmark icon by using a custom CSS file. Here's the forum thread.

I followed the same steps again with my new profile, and that started the trouble once again.

Here are the steps I followed:

Typed vivaldi:experiments in the address bar and enabled the CSS modifications.
Created a text file with .css extension, and inserted the following line in it:
.BookmarkButton .button-on svg path { fill: white !important; }
Placed this file in C:\Program Files\Util\Vivaldi\
Selected that folder in Settings > Appearance > Custom UI modifications

As a result, the color of the bookmark icon has changed from gray to white, but this also breaks the bookmarking (both setting and clearing).

The UI does not allow me to reverse this step.

Please help!

Easy to reproduce (on Debian and Win10, at least):

Click "Bookmark Page" button.

Don't touch "Remove" button, just click "Bookmark Page" button again.

You'll find the page bookmarked on Speed Dial.
