Pulling the plug on expired Operating Systems

@d4l3d What do you expect Vivaldi to do?
-
@d4l3d , because of your disabillities, which apps do you need? Maybe there are valid alternatives or even versions for Linux.
I know that not all users are computer savvy and for some the change may seem too complicated, even if it is not, and I am sure that here you can receive all the help in this regard.
For Example Q4OS is a lightwight Linux distro, very indicated for computer neophytes. You can Download and install it like an normal Windows app with it's own setup and it has an UI very similar to the one of Windows. -
@luetage If you believe the point of my post was to regret making it then, thank you for your kind consideration. That being said, the more appropriate question to the one you pose would be the obverse which is what most here are discussing. Please catch up.
-
@Catweazle I do appreciate your attempts to help but, I don't think you caught the gist of my problem. You're wrongly assuming I'm able to function with all faculties intact. I jump thru a lot of hoops just to post here.
I virtually never bring this up but I have a 160+ IQ so very few opportunities get past me and little intimidates me. I continually monitor my options. -
@d4l3d , sorry if you understood it this way, I have not doubted your mental abilities and your intelligence, but this has nothing to do with being ignorant on certain topics, we all are. It was simply intended as a suggestion not knowing your physical capabilities, pointing out options to the dilemma you have with the OS.
-
@d4l3d If you had read the replies here you would have realized by now it’s pointless to complain about it. Vivaldi doesn’t have the resources to support operating system versions Chromium doesn’t support. You can complain about it as much as you like, but it won’t change anything. I’m on Android 6 and from Chromium 110 on this won’t be supported anymore. I don’t blame Vivaldi for it, but my OEM. You should blame Windows, not Vivaldi.
-
@Catweazle And again, I do sincerely appreciate it.
-
@luetage Read more better, lu. Nowhere in my OP did I in any way disparage Vivaldi. Vivaldi reacted in the only realistic way left to them. I referenced OS and spoke only to corporate greed and it's ramifications. The results can be extremely ugly and irreconcilable for some of us. Your comment is therefore redundant. You seem bent on adding to my despondency. I imagine it's easy and entertaining to criticize from your relative privilege. This is strikingly counterproductive. I think your done.
BTW, It's nonsensical to think I would complain about corporate greed over a free browser.
Before you think I'm overreacting, a leaky OS, a leaky browser with projected reduced functionality can be a direct threat to my existence. -
@d4l3d Most user here are just try to be helpful, they can't do much other than offer alternative OS as solution to this problem. I'm pretty much on the same boat as you as I'm not able to "upgrade" to a new hardware anytime soon to chase the latest tech train.
So we are going to be left behind for a while until we can afford to buy a new shiny device to keep up with the progress. Until then, a free/cheap solution would be dual boot windows + Linux with current device as suggested by someone in the forum. I have suggested Vivaldi team should do some sort of collaboration with Linux community to help out people like us to adopt/migrate to Linux easier, but alas... that didn't happened. So, we will have to do that by ourselves, or turn to alternative browser that still supporting win7/8.
-
@dude99 , Vivaldi are included as default Browser in Manjaro Linux and FerenOS.
Any current Browser will finish the support of W7 in the near future, also FF and forks, same as the Chromiums.
There isn't any other alternative as to use an outdated browser or changing the OS, actualize to W10 or using Linux in Dual boot. The last the only solution without money. -
@dude99 I never asked for help nor was there anything in my OP that suggested volunteering. It was a basic lamentation reinforcing all I was seeing here at the time, nothing more.
-
@d4l3d Hmm... then I afraid you are barking at the wrong tree, you should bark at the Chromium team instead. LOL
IMHO v team aren't being jerk about this & not willing to continue supporting win7/8, they have already mentioned a few times it's a budget/resources problem & they can't afford to continue the massive effort to patch the removed code back into the app on each update, & it will only become more difficult & impossible task as more changes become bloated mess.
I think what important is we can try to move forward with the least amount of pain & loss. No point dwelling on a lost cause, as it can't resolve the problem we are facing.
I just found out about Tiny11, maybe that's a solution worth exploring...

@d4l3d You’re just trying to pick a fight you know you will win because you are highly intelligent:

I mean… practically a genius. Why stomp on us dimwits with heavy weaponry?
-
@luetage Are you aware that you first made an aggressive, accusatory statement that had no relation to what I wrote? There was virtually no reason to respond to the OP except maybe in commiseration. I'm profoundly disabled and this is extremely difficult and painful. Please stop.
-
@dude99 This mostly has nothing to do with my original OP which was a statement only. New installations have already been addressed. I'm profoundly disabled and continuing this is extremely difficult and painful. Please stop.

It's Friday everyone, let's just chill a bit. I'm going to lock this thread for a while.

@Chas4 Better security with new version? At least not with Windows, where they bloated the code (more code - more ways to potential security bugs and hacks) and added dozens ways to spy on their users.
-
@LonM It's been nearly a fortnight... Is it too soon to continue — from a Mac perspective?

Tiny11
For a moment I thought that's a compatibility shim to make stuff requiring Windows 10/11 run on older Windows.
There's a start of something of the sort:
https://github.com/vxiiduu/VxKexToo bad ReactOS development isn't progressing quickly.
