Inbuilt blocker vs extension proof.
-
Lets face it, Ublock origin, ABP and Adguard will be drastically weakened once mv3 comes into place.
Yes we have the inbuilt tracker + ad blocker offered by Vivaldi. But we gotta be honest it is pretty weak when compared to browsers having an inbuilt adblock like Brave. Or comparing it with browsers that excel with blocking and privacy i.e: Firefox.
So let's reinforce the inbuilt shield Vivaldi gave us. Because I have tried it for myself and it is honestly pretty bad.
Please note that the above, I have used custom filters which I found on the forum and reddit. I.e Fanboys list, ABP, UBO etc.
But as you can see we still have ads. (Yes I have disabled 'enable ads from our partners).
Here is the same search but with Ublock Origin this time
Obviously we cannot remove that edge promotion because that's out of our control.
But we can see that Vivaldi's blocker is not doing its function properly! Thats the evidence! (Reddit is worse trust me)
So can the devs see the issue that no matter the blogs or what mods have to say here, there do is a tiny problem with your inbuilt shield.
BUT! It does have the potential of actually being better if at least the devs listen to some feedback. Or we can just try and put up our custom lists which people can obviously share.
Until then, no-way people will use the inbuilt blocker here if such problems happen at this point. Rather just use a blocking extension .
funny edit: Just want to point out that the ad is about Opera which is something Vivaldi claims to be better XD. Advertise your former home

PPathduck moved this topic from Vivaldi for Windows on

@AryanDevasagayaum You apparently don’t know what you are talking about. Your above post is the EVIDENCE.
sigh
Vivaldi’s adblocker works as expected. You have to fathom that Vivaldi doesn’t create blocker lists, it only provides the background upon which these lists can be used. Now a default Vivaldi installation comes with a default set of filter lists. Some may find them too aggressive, others may find them lacking, but be aware the defaults were chosen consciously. However, you can add or remove blocker lists to your liking and even introduce custom lists written by yourself.
The only problem is that Vivaldi doesn’t work with adblock plus extended CSS selectors. This is a feature that might be introduced before manifest version 3 is released.

@luetage Yeah I know that Vivaldi has nothing to do with filters etc. Thing is there is room for improvement.
Most adblockers are open source, I think Brave's too is open source (correct if I'm wrong). Why not implement this tech into the already weak one?
Don't get me wrong Vivaldi is great but we do have many issues that have been left unresolved for so long. I have a fuss for the blocker because on the website it says 'no need for an extension.' I say otherwise, we need an extension for a proper flow here.
-
@luetage Also I like the fully emote you placed it
-
FYI: AdGuard and uBlock have both already released MV3-based extensions:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adguard-adblocker-mv3-exp/apjcbfpjihpedihablmalmbbhjpklbdf
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ublock-origin-lite/ddkjiahejlhfcafbddmgiahcphecmpfhWhile these are still relatively early versions with many features missing, they are fully working with what they offer.
Additionally, if you wish to get serious with content blocking, AdGuard offers separate desktop and mobile apps that surpass the capabilities of all extensions and enable content filtering on all applications in the system among other features. Those aren't free though but they aren't expensive either.

@barbudo2005 well despite the team saying they will improve their built in adblocker I see no proper change lad
-
It is not necessary yet because we have UBO.
-
@barbudo2005 Give the internal one an honest try. For the longest time I refused to use it, because I had ublock set up. But I switched in the later half of 2022 and haven’t looked back. Even in it’s current state it’s more than sufficient, you just have to get used to it.
-
Honestly, why would I prefer a part if I can have the whole thing?
This doesn't mean that I don't appreciate having the possibility of the built-in blocker when UBO no longer exists.
-
@luetage do I need to show you a pair of screenshots with Reddit's home page one taken with uBO working and another with Vivaldi's (or Opera, or Brave for that matter) internal ad-blocker at work? it would be a waste of time I guess, the fact that you are happy with Vivaldi's ad-block features suggests that formerly you did not use uBO's full potential, and that's fine but it is not a solution for people like me.
I do not know how much work would be necessary to bring the internal ad-blocker to uBO levels, but the fact is that within a few months there will be only one browser with the real uBO still working, putting on the market the only chromium browser with advanced uBO features could be a great way to advertise Vivaldi (the number of uBO users is way beyond Vivaldi's userbase, only in Opera's extensions store it counts more than 10 millions downloads) - IMHO this a huge chance to finally make Vivaldi a hit, are you people going to miss it?
-
@TalGarik Post away, I’m using reddit and see no issue. You have to realize ublock will most likely disappear and Vivaldi will not copy/paste ublock and build it in. As far as I know improvements will come to the internal one, but for ublock you will have to change browser.
edit: To be fair I have entries in my custom list for reddit:
[Adblock Plus 2.0] ! Version: ! Title: CustomList ! Last modified: ! Expires: ! Homepage: ! ! reddit homepage ad banner feed www.reddit.com##div[aria-label="carousel"] ! reddit icons www.reddit.com##.icon-video_live www.reddit.com##a[aria-label="Advertise"] www.reddit.com###COIN_PURCHASE_DROPDOWN_ID
-
same page settings, one with uBO active, one with Vivaldi's ads and trackers blocker, it is the custom cosmetic filtering that makes the difference, since it allows the elimination of distracting and useless stuff - I am aware that within a few months only Firefox will allow the use of the real uBO - which paired with iOS opened to non-webkit browsers could make FF the only browser for uBO fanatics
We do not know how many uBO users make use of this and of the many others uBO features, even if it was 1% of them it would amount to a huge potential audience for Vivaldi and its 2.4 million users.
-
@TalGarik You can block the whole sidebar with Vivaldi too… As I mentioned before, extended CSS filters are not supported, but for this specific block you don’t need them.
-
@luetage you are correct

Where did you get this entries from or did you find out how to block them?
-
@oudstand I wrote them myself. You need to look up the documentation on how to write adblock filters, inspect the UI of the element you want to block and then implement it. It’s obviously not as casual and beginner friendly as with ublock, where it’s all point and click, but it gets the job done.

it is a matter of seconds versus a matter of minutes (or hours or even giving up if you are not skilled at all) I guess my previous point stands: the chromium browser incorporating uBO would become instantly appealing to a lot of users.

I hope the built-in adblocker has this:
In the meantime you can always use Stylus to do the same:
div[aria-label="carousel"], .icon-video_live, a[aria-label="Advertise"], #COIN_PURCHASE_DROPDOWN_ID {display: none !important;}
-
@barbudo2005 No matter what you do. It is still a massive fact that the inbuilt adblocker of vivaldi is weaker than competitors at default settings.
Not every user know how to use filters or coding whatever you just sent. It is up for the dev team to work on it, not wait in the last minute to change the coding.
Vivaldi can have a decent chance of gaining more users if their blocker was good! If they do nothing then I am sorry, Brave, Firefox and even Opera will get the bigger cake slice at this point
