Window is over-maximized, plus : what is/will be the last good version for Windows 7 ?
-
Starting (I think) with the last update (5.6.2867.50 Stable channel 64-bit), Vivaldi over-maximizes its window.
When one clicks on the top right icon to maximise the window, instead of fitting right within the available space, it gets a bit too high, so that the status bar at the bottom is half-hidden by the Windows taskbar.
This is under Windows 7. Any ideas how to correct this ?
Since I'm aware Vivaldi is about to drop support for Windows 7, I thought maybe the non-compatibility had already kicked in, and my first move was to downgrade to the prior version. However, I read that this is strongly discouraged.
Hence my subordinate question : how can I know what is, or what will be, the last good version for Windows 7, so I can block upgrades from that point ? I don't intend to drop Windows 7.
-
@Clairvaux Blocking updates is the same problem as not downgrading to an older version. It leaves your system unprotected from known exploits.
Look for workarounds, adjusting your workflow if you must remain with an outdated OS.
For example, try setting your Windows taskbar to autohide, or position it on the left of the monitor. With most landscape monitors, vertical screen real-estate is precious than horizontal space. A vertical taskbar uses fewer pixels than a horizontal one.

I have the same problem. Same version, also on Win 7. Is it really OS specific?
Screen
It looks like cropped by ~8px on all sides. The biggest problem with scrollbar - it's cutted in half. -

Hm... Looks like it's a known problem and fixing in progress
-
@MrDB Thank you. That's the issue. Glad it's identified and on the road to being fixed.
-
@Pesala Yes. I know. As I have made clear, I want my computer to be left open to exploits. All right ? May I have your permission ?
I am currently using a 20-year old Microsoft program (Office 2003) and I have never had any problem whatsoever. I will not, repeat not, leave Windows 7. Can we stop speaking about it now ? Is it possible to ask a question on a tech forum while using Windows 7, without the conversation being immediately derailed on "you should not be using this" ?
Furthermore, no, downgrading is not discouraged because (by definition) older versions of Vivaldi are not as secure as the latest one. That I know, thank you very much.
It's discouraged because mixing an older version with a newer profile may break things further down the line. That's what I read in the official help, anyway.
Finally, please don't lecture me on where I should put my Windows 7 taskbar. If it has been on the bottom for 10 years and more, there's a reason for that : I prefer it that way.
Any information on when, exactly, Vivaldi will stop begin compatible with Windows 7, or how to detect that point in the future, is still welcome.

@Clairvaux
Vivaldi
will likely drop support the same time asChromium
does, which currently seems to bev110
on February 7th, 2023. -
Same problem occurs in win8.1 after I updated today.
This is really weird, because they said they fixed the missing border & shadow bug... But it's not fixed at all, & instead we got even more bugs related to the window's border.
Is this some kind of political meme taunting the missing Trump's border wall?
LOL
EDIT:
Here is a temporary CSS mod hack to fix this bug,you won't need this once it's "fixed":body:has(.win.maximized) {border: black solid; border-width: 0 3px 2px 3px;}
EDIT2: Sorry guys, the above CSS can't fix the offscreen oversized window, it can only centered the content within the screeen...

@dude99
Hi, one border fix is in an internally build for Windows 7.
I hope they get it sorted for the Vivaldi 5.7 release, this will be the last one for Windows 7 - 8.1.Cheers, mib

There are some users who insist on following Windows 7, which is certainly understandable, it is an excellent OS, but unfortunately it is no longer supported and little by little incompatibilities will appear with all kinds of important software, browsers and Vivaldi included, which exponentially increases the risk of moving through the network due to the lack of the necessary security patches in the different updates.
I already said in another thread that the only way to keep Windows 7 to be able to use customary applications is to use Windows 7 exclusively locally and use a dual-boot Linux distro for online tasks with an updated Vivaldi.
The best course is to change the OS. Apart from more than a hundred Linux distros for all tastes, there are also recent appearances of modified Windows that offer the necessary compatibility with Windows programs, but lighter and without the Bloatware and invasive telemetry of the current Windows 10 and 11, for example Atlas OS (corresponding to Windows 10 20H2).

Consider the way they roll out the updates nowdays, I'm not that confident they will deliver a solid, or at least a decent build to bid the win7+8 fan base farewell.
I already fixed the border long time ago myself with this CSS mod:
/* BROWSER BORDER */ #browser:not(.native).normal #main::after {content: ""; position: absolute; inset: 0; border: solid var(--colorBg); border-width: 0 2.5px 2.5px 1.5px; pointer-events: none;} #browser:not(.native).normal:not(.is-settingspage).color-behind-tabs-off #main::after {border-color: var(--colorAccentBg);}
Cant' fix the missing shadow, as that's outside the capability of CSS. LOL
EDIT:
Holy Cow, I just noticed this maximized bug have seriously borked the maximized mode! I can't access the windows task bar because the oversized window have blocked it completely!I think I shouldn't have update today, all v5.6 updates are full of disappointment & regretful...

which exponentially increases the risk of moving through the network due to the lack of the necessary security patches in the different updates.
I'm not an IT guy, so I'm could be completely wrong about this assumption... LOL
Nowdays there are only about 4% of Internet user still running on win7+8 globally, yes? Surely hackers & malicious parties would rather focus their evil effort preying on the 96% of populace instead of doing the same amount of work+time to only able to target less than 5% of Internet user. This is the very reason Linux are taunt to be "invincible", because their very low % of market share compare to Win & Android causing hacker to not even bother to consider 'em as "target".
With the same logic, as time passes win7/8 should become less dangerous for normal Internet user even without the latest security update, because no one want to spend a lot of effort going after tiny amount of targets. Like today no sane hacker would want to target winXp user base because there are only about 0.1% of 'em exist. I think this "lack of security update" threat should only be a serious threat to corporation/businesses, but might not be so for individual user.
-
@dude99 , It is not that hackers are especially interested in hacking Windows 7, but every day there are more than 80,000 new malware circulating on the network that companies have to combat by putting the corresponding patches against these exploits, this is what it is about. A system updated with the corresponding patches is not affected when you visit an infected page, but those that lack these patches due to having an outdated and unsupported OS and browser.

Thank you. Duly written down. Would you have a link to a Vivaldi page stating as much ? I did not find any.

@Clairvaux
Hi, there is no official statement from Vivaldi I am aware of but if the major Chromium browser Chrome, Edge and Brave stop the support of 7 - 8.1 I cant imagine why and how Vivaldi can.
for example:
https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/11197967945613-Sunsetting-support-for-Windows-7-and-8-8-1Cheers, mib
-
@Clairvaux there is some concise information on this topic by a
Vivaldi
security expert.Not sure if it came across accordingly, but maintaining compatibility for older systems may also prevent proper use of modern security features.
Bottom line, the average user will not be put at risk to soothe some unteachable fringe group whining about their love for using a discontinued operating system in production.
-
@mib2berlin according to @yngve's statements and in line how past
Vivaldi
releases matchedChromium
versions,Vivaldi 5.6
will be the last to support Win<10. -
Same problem. Win 7/ 64b. I have turned on auto-hide taskbar in Windows and with Vivaldi open I'm not able to open taskbar placing mouse cursor on the bottom of screen. To open taskbar, I must minimize Vivaldi, change focus to any other program and place mouse cursor on the bottom of screen.
I checked it in two computers and on both it appears after upgrade. -
