Option to Autohide Tab Bar / UI
-
Voted.
Another use case where the suggested workarounds aren't really suitable - I use the vertical tab layout as I usually have very large number of tabs open and need quick access to them. I also use window tiling, so with Vivaldi occupying 50% of the screen, the tabs take 25-30% of the total area.
What I would like to see is the tab 'bar' appear as an overlay when I move the cursor to the edge of the window (top for top bar, left for left etc).

Here's my little modification, which helps to minimize browser UI.

Since the latest snapshot (5.3.2643.3) problem with floating panels I've been reconsidering how I use Vivaldi's browser...
One of the indispensable features f(or me) is the Reader View, for which I use a Command Chain which also hides the UI.
I don't suppose many others often hide the UI... But if one's display is large enough why not float the entire UI, since when it's in focus it would still be usable?
Aesthetically pleasing? Too busy (depending on the background) or the page? Just too weird?Perhaps as an option?

@oakdaleftl Feature request topics need a valid title.
-
@pesala I take your point... How can I change it? (Say, to "Floating UI"?)
-
@oakdaleftl Edit the post using the 3 vertical dots icon?
-
@oakdaleftl I hadn't know that title of the starting post was editable... Thanks!
BTW: Better? -
@oakdaleftl Nope. I still have no clue what you want. Are you requesting detachable panels or just a detachable Translation Panel?
-
@pesala Not detachable, no. Transparent — not requiring any resizing of the page... Using the entire area of the application's window for the page, and overlaying the UI.
(Do I remember correctly, versions of Presto Opera having detachable panels?)
-
I doubt V team will adopt this floating UI idea any time soon, cuz it's too radical for most noobs to appreciate... Even if they gonna do it, with so many flexible setup Vivaldi currently supporting, this won't be an easy task.
I have requested a floating vertical tabbar ages ago (can't find the request topic anymore), & I end up made one myself with CSS mod cuz I think they aren't interested in a floating tabbar concept, then eventually I turn most GUI into floating element like the old demo above. LOL

wow! It is very cool! Too bad the developers don't want to do that. Even Microsoft has already done this in the Edge browser.

I do not understand. Why did the developers make it possible to place the tab bar on the sides. But they did not make floating panels. If you make a very small width, the names of the tabs are not visible. If you make a very large width, you lose a very large screen area. It's so logical to make it floating.

Huge fan of this. I usually hide all my UI elements using shortcuts. So I don't see my right side tab bar nor my top side address bar when browsing. But sometimes I need to open them. It's really annoying that the sites I'm viewing need to relayout every time I do this. Would love to be able to float my tab bar and address bar as well
-
sorry @dude99
how do I get this floating CSS thingy you are showing in the GIF? -
@dougiet91 unfortunately all of my CSS mod no longer updated for v5.7, so some of 'em is kinda buggy, but you still can try 'em via https://forum.vivaldi.net/search?term=&in=titles&matchWords=all&by[]=dude99&categories[]=52&searchChildren=true&sortBy=topic.timestamp&sortDirection=desc&showAs=posts

Hello everyone, my request is probably very niche.
I love a simple UI. I often use Vivaldi to watch streaming or video while doing something else. Right now I use it with only the tab bar, a few pins and a few tabs opened.
I'd like if, while using another app next to it, the UI would completely disappear, just leaving the page to be watch/read depending on content, and the UI just comes floating when the cursor is hovered on the app.
I've made two examples of what this could look like.

@lemarcu
Hi, you can use Progressive Web App as workaround, no idea if this work on MacOS.
Choose Install from the tab context menu:Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Thanks for the reply and suggestion.
Yeah I know these exists, but to be honest I'm not a fan as there is still that top bar. And I already use Vivaldi with just one top bar the make it as slim as possible.
I just thought that having a borderless window would be a bold take as no web browser offers that kind of view/UI.

Would very much like the vertical tab bar to automatically hover and hide. That is, it is easy to manage, and the UI is also beautiful!
