Open a link outside Vivaldi not opening if a browser window is not open

But I'm not using the android version yet on phone or tablet due to clunky tab UI
Please post in Vivaldi on Android about your issue with tabs. On phones, you can disable the Tab Bar, if you find it too clunky.

I switched to Firefox because of this bug. Waiting to switch back once it's fixed (if I haven't become too comfortable with Firefox by then).

As umutbesler stated, the fix sort of works. If Vivaldi is not launched and you click on an external link, the link opens correctly (as it did with v4 and earlier). However, if Vivaldi is launched and no window is open, clicking on an external link causes Vivaldi to crash. This is reproducible (using Mojave).
Edit: Have now discovered that I am getting random instances of Vivaldi crashing (just leaving Vivaldi running with no window open and opening a window with Vivaldi running)
Edit again: Edit again: This crashing is happening more and more. One of the crashes that is reproducible is when you launch Vivaldi, then close the window (but leave Vivaldi running) then click on the Vivaldi dock icon to open a window. Crashes. Relaunches with no problem, but closing the window and then opening a new one results in the crash. Back to a different browser until this is fixed. This problem is worse than the original one reported in this thread!

Not for me. If Vivaldi is closed and I click an external link, Vivaldi opens to a blank page and not the link I clicked.
Back to Firefox.

Be glad it's just Vivaldi crashing. I was reading this forum a couple of hours ago, clicked on this topic, and immediately the entire screen went blank. I then got the multi-language message from Apple that I'd had a kernel panic and that my machine was restarting.
I had installed the 5.2.2623.24 update today, and Vivaldi has been barely usable since. There seem to be numerous new problems in addition to those originally appearing with version 5.
I can't afford to be having kernel panics, so I'm going to have to change my default browser to Firefox. I didn't want to do that, but I now feel I have no choice. I've been a loyal Vivaldi user for years now, but until some serious attention is paid to the Mac version, I'll have to wait on the sidelines.

I reported this crash several weeks ago (VB-87452) as well as the issue that was reported in the original post, which is currently being tracked under VB-85202. The devs are actively working on a fix for both.

@pafflick The problem seems not yet solved in the latest 5.2.2623.26.
Still, in some (not all) cases when I click a link in an external app, Vivaldi gets to front but doesn't open the respective URL.Thanks for looking at this again. It's a workflow disturbing bug.
-
@janpeeters Yes - as I said in my post, the issue is not fixed yet. Once there's progress on this bug, we'll let you know.
-
@pafflick I might have misinterpreted "The next Stable major update should have the patch implemented." I thought there was a new stable release last week and I thought that that have should have fixed the issue.
I'll be waiting patiently. Thanks! -
5.2.2623.28 seems to have fixed everything addressed in this thread. Back to using Vivaldi! Thanks team.
Edit: Spoke a little too soon. As pafflick indiated, the issue originally stated by me in opening this thread isn't fully fixed. Vivaldi will open an external link if Vivaldi is not launched or launched with a window open. However, if Vivaldi is launched with no window open ... link does not open. But, the crashing is fixed and Vivaldi is again useable. So, will await resolution of VB-85202.

The crash may be fixed, but the problem is definitely NOT fixed. Additionally, another (related) bug was introduced: Clicking "About Vivaldi" from the menu bar just opens a blank window.
Here is a screen recording (https://imgur.com/LT4XXN8) which demonstrates:
- The "About Vivaldi" bug
- The long standing bug with external URLs not opening in Vivaldi when all Vivaldi windows are closed OR if the Vivaldi application is not open.
- And: 2 blank windows opening when an external URL is clicked instead of the URL.
Vivaldi version: 5.2.2623.28 (Stable channel) (arm64)
Vivaldi Settings:- Homepage: Start Page
- Startup with: Last Session
- Lazy Load Restored Tabs
- Always Load Pinned Tabs
- New Tab Page: Start Page

@janpeeters That was in point 2, regarding another, unrelated issue (
VB-86199 Lost typing in the URL field
) with the address bar, in a reply to this particular post.
The issue discussed in this thread isVB-85202 macOS: Opening url not working if no window open
(currently unresolved). -
@pafflick Thanks for clarifying that missed that it were two separate cases.

When I click on a link in my mac mail, I get a blank page or a page I was on previously, I must click that link 2-3x before it goes to the correct page. What is going on here & how to fix it?
-
@heather0 Yup! Known issue: Click link, click link again... It ain't a pretty work-around but it works.
-
Just dropping in to add another person experiencing this issue. Not a deal breaker for using Vivaldi, but just a silly nuisance that I wish would get corrected. Running Monterey and Vivaldi 5.
-
FYI, this is now (mostly) fixed in the 2669.3 Snapshot. No promises, but I am hopeful that we will see the fix for VB-85202 soon in a 5.2 Stable update along with a fix for a crash that many Mac users are seeing.
-
This issue seems fixed with the 5.3 update.
-
I am on version 5.5.2805.44 on macOS 13.0.1 and I can confirm that the problem persists, at least on my computer.
-
Can anyone reproduce the problem? So I can know if the problem is specific to my computer or if it happens to everyone.
