Solved Visited link colors dont change
-
As stated clicking on a link, say in a search engine etc, the color of link doesnt change after visiting and returning. I do not know if its a setting in Vivaldi that disables this or ? But on any page, clicking on link colors do not change so 'appear' as unvisited.
Searching all I found was folks wanting to change link colors and using css but that is not what I'm wanting (force a color of choice), just normal display of link denoting unvisited/visited/hover etc. -
luetage: No not using private window (tried to see if any effect but same results)
Pathduck: Well yes sites that use custom colors for links show but clicking on link they dont change.
Same with the links on pages you linked- clicking any then returning it is still blue. Even clicking on the links you provided above, returning here they are still blue and that is the issue. Links do not change color after clicking denoting visited. I dont really care what color they are just want to see a difference. Like the page you linked, a list of links-cant tell which were opened...Good night.....ummm
Solved: cant edit original post as solved.
I tried to remember how long this has been happening and memory jogged. With discovering even though Vivaldi closed and reopened later, ALL browsing history for earlier that day saved, I had gone into settings and changed 'save browsing history' to 'session only' which worked as far as purging history when closing Vivaldi (because it doesn't log)- didn't realize it broke link colors. Changed setting back to 'day only' and link colors now work...

@anev942 Are you using a private window?
-
@anev942 This is often controlled by the web sites, who can set their own colour for visited links.
But it works fine in Vivaldi, for sites that do not override it. Easiest to see is on basic file list pages:
https://ftp.sunet.se
https://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Try clicking on one of those folders, and then back again, the colour will change.
It also works on search engines like DDG, Ecosia and Starpage. For Google it does not, but that's their problem.
There is no setting in Vivaldi that can override the colour of visited links, but it's doable by user CSS extensions, try searching. Firefox has had such an option a very long time but it still only works on basic sites.

@anev942 It’s not solved. Session works for me. Yesterday I tried it with a private window and it broke for me, that’s why I asked whether you are using private windows. Private windows use a session setting too of course. What’s strange about it is that session only works for me in regular windows. So it’s a bug, but it’s kinda hard to pin down.
-
@luetage Interesting. For your test with "Session Only" does it actually save any history at all? Remember to restart after change.
For me testing in 5.0 Stable, zero history is saved with that setting, which certainly explains why visited link colours don't show. While in 4.2 history is saved also with "Session Only".
-
Fairly new Vivaldi user-so still learning how it responds to settings and how i can customize.
Solved as far as original issue of link status breaking & why and how to restore. I assumed session meant time from opening browser and closing it- not each single action or page view. But sessions for me is zero history is saved and what caused visited link or status to become inoperable.
Also assumed "one day" was calendar but was surprised when opening this morning that history from yesterday is showing- so I guess its 24 hours? Ill not make any changes and see if/when Vivaldi starts deleting older history.
That there isn't option to clear browsing history on exit is odd.
Workaround as far as saving history is manually deleting before closing browser but that is reason enough to delete Vivaldi and try another browser. -

Come on, you don’t threaten anyone with that, it’s just childish.
@pathduck On snapshot history/links work for me. This is a problem on stable then.

That there isn't option to clear browsing history on exit is odd. This is what "Session Only" is meant to do - it's just bugged at the moment. As well as in Private Mode it should save history during the session there as well.
I can't imagine anyone wanting to have zero history, it would mean (apart from the visited link colour), that the back button would not even work. What's important is that history is cleared on browser exit. But then you have the paranoia tinfoil-hat crowd who run in Private Window all the time, to them even Session-only is apparently not enough
I guess you could report the issue, but I also think the team must be aware of such a bug by now.

Ha...Simply looking for replacement browser, they all have different quirks, none satisfy everyone, if trial doesnt meet expectations, try another. Not sure how that was taken as 'threat'. Then again I didn't say I wasn't 12 years old :).
Sounds as though Vivaldi session/history works different than intended or in temporary state that otherwise would work as I would like.
Bottom line though is the link issue was self inflicted because of 'bug' in the way sessions history is currently being implemented.
Which is why I posted in the first place. That the link color status issue I had isn't the way Vivaldi handles links means I'll continue to explore it.
Hopefully the history/sessions will be addressed, if not (brace for it), I'll look at other browsers. -

You take that back now, otherwise i'll hold my breath til i turn purple! And i'm not eating those peas!!
-
@guigirl Ok, I take it back, you don’t turn purple, I win. But the peas are mandatory I’m afraid.
