Solved Dead bird icon on every page using streaming
-
Error with 'dead bird' icon happens on 1-2 second after open on every page that using streaming (YouTube live streams, Twitch, hd.kinopoisk.ru):
Vivaldi: 5.0.2497.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
OS: Windows 11 Version 21H2 (Build 22000.318)
JavaScript: V8 9.6.180.22Tried everything that found, but without success:
- created second, third, etc profiles;
- removed all extensions;
- removed and reinstalled from scratch browser and profile;
- enabled/disabled tracking and blocking;
- launched with logged out Vivaldi account;
- manipulation with third-party cookies;
Did anybody face with similar issue and was able to solve it?
Thanks in advance -
Thanks a lot @luetage!
In vivaldi://gpu I found error logs about missed libraries:
[9812:5564:0116/114304.363:ERROR:dxva_video_decode_accelerator_win.cc(1462)] : DXVAVDA fatal error: could not LoadLibrary: mfplat.dll: The specified module could not be found. (0x7E)
As I have Windows N version, there are not installed some additional features. So after installing Media Feature Pack for Windows N the issue is solved and error messages in logs disappeared:
-
On Windows 10 N: Select the Start button, then select Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Optional features > Add a feature. Find the Media Feature Pack in the list of available optional features.
-
On Windows 11 N: Select the Start button, then select Settings > Apps > Optional features. Select View features next to Add an optional feature, and then select the Media Feature Pack in the list of available optional features.

P. S. It's weird incompatibility between OS out of box and browser. In my opinion it has to be mentioned somewhere (at least in troubleshooting), but I didn't find any mentions

@vaiardohaeris Check out
vivaldi://gpu
, you might find some answers there. -
@vaiardohaeris yes, i am having the same issue with the dead bird issue. I have shut down all malware and virus protection also and it still happens. I hope someone finds a fix for this. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but the next uninstall will be it for Vivaldi.

Facing the same problem with Facebook. I tried having on a new, empty profile and it keeps "deadbirding" after a few scrolldowns.

Same issue. Starts to be very annoying. Every page with autoplay side video crashes. Seems in Picture-In-Picture component.
Tried disable all the extensions, different-clean profile, reinstall system codecs. None of them helped.
Also tried to find a reason by enabling console logging (--enable-logging), nothing interested there.Log lines right after crash:
[12896:10580:0116/100221.802:INFO:CONSOLE(22)] "[object Object] [object Object] [object Object]", source: https://www.com/cra/2.3.35/ott-player-config.min.js (22) [12896:10580:0116/100221.806:INFO:CONSOLE(26)] "Synchronous XMLHttpRequest on the main thread is deprecated because of its detrimental effects to the end user's experience. Important to say is I'm still running on old Windows 2008 Server R2 i.e. Windows 7.

@vaiardohaeris I would guess few people use the N version. If any of the Vivaldi staff use Windows N IΒ donβt know, therefore this simply might not be known.
-
You're right, cannot believe. Issue were fixed by installing Update for Desktop Experience Decoder for Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB2483177).
Interesting, it was not needed until few last Vivaldi versions, even Chrome was working perfectly. I probably had the hotfix installed the whole time and something went wrong recently.
-
On Windows N or KN you need very often update of Windows Media Feature Pack and Windows Media Player to get rid of such "dead bird" tabs. Vivaldi has to use some broken Windows interface for decoding videos. That is a Windows problem.
Other browsers have special paid licences/fixes to add working code. -
Poor bird
-
I get the bird (snort) all the time when I steam hockey from nhl.com. Always seems to last 20-30m then dead bird. Nothing in particular in the logs (thanks for the vivaldi://gpu link) Using Windows 10.
It is Windows 10 Education, 20H2
-
@dagsix Windows 10 N or 10 KN? See https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/549352
-
It is Windows 10 Education, 20H2.
The timing seems very consistent... like something is filled then crashes... I could start timing it. It only crashes once, It doesn't seem to crash again after the page is reloaded.
I always think I'm just getting comfortable and then dead bird.
-
@dagsix Does it happen in Guest Window, too?
If alls is fine, some settings/flags or extension in your regular profile could cause your issue. -
Thanks I'll try that next game and report back. The only extension running is Lastpass.

I have the same issue.
OS: Windows 10 Professional Edition 21H1
Vivaldi: 5.0.2497.38, and update to 5.0.2497.48 today, the issue is still there.I have tried the posts above I could, but did not solved.
Is there any other possible way to solve it? -
@ritawu If you have windows 10 N or KN, see https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/549274

I am having this same issue only on app.plex.tv, all other streaming sites seem to work without issues.
Issue occurs with no extensions installed.
Tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration in vivaldi://flags with no difference (have had this work in the past with similar video issues).Vivaldi Version: 5.1.2553.3 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Windows Version: Windows 10 Pro 21H2 19044.1469 -

I still tried it, but couldn't find the Media Feature Pack in the list
