Performance of the browser compared to Edge or Firefox

Hello,
The Vivaldi browser is very slow compared to Edge or Firefox.
On Windows 11, last version of Vivaldi.
Any parameters to check?

@mmseguy Vivaldi uses an additional layer of code on top of Chromium to make it customisable. This affect performance of opening new windows, but it is a matter of milliseconds.

What do you mean by very slow? How many tabs/windows do you usually open?

For example, right now, several seconds to display a page, with only one window aleady opened.
It is very variable.

If you create a new test/clean V profile, does it feel any different?
What is your setting here?

@mmseguy , for me Vivaldi is faster than the other browser I use, Edge Chromium), Otter (Qt5), Min (Electron), all these in default settings without extensions, scripts (I use them only for comparisions)
Sys specs in my signature, but I know that Windows don't like Vivaldi as default browser, in W10 I have eliminated this behavior of MS to annoying me with messages to use EDGE by default, I don't know if it is also possible in W11, I think so.

Hi, I use Windows 11 on two systems and except of start Vivaldi is as fast as Chrome/Edge for me.
Last week I work on a friends PC with Windows 10 and Vivaldi was so slow I cant imagine.
After we kicked Avast to the hell it was as fast as before.
I set up the PC a few month ago and she installed Avast without asking me.
Do you use any third party AV and /or cleaning software?

@mib2berlin third party AV was needed until W7, but in the last years the Window Defender has improved to one of the best AV out there. A third party AV in't really need anymore in Windows.
Maybe you can install Malwarebytes (not so good, you have to kill it after closing in the Task Manager, wasting RAM without functionality), or much better for this reason the Panda Cloud Cleaner, which works on demand and don't stay in Memory after scanning and cleaning (very efficient and without false positives), apart of the Defender, to have them at hand for some few occasions to eliminate some PUPs, but this is optional anyway.

Thanks @catweazle but I don´t use 3 P. AV software since 10 years or so, I guess the OP does.

@mib2berlin ....and the common sense too. But performance issues in W10 or more en W11 are due also because the intention of MS to put EDGE as their first browser, I think, If you eliminate this behavior (not so easy, but possible with some apps), the performance of Vivaldi increase a lot.
In W7this was not a problem, but in last years MS has adquired some very bad habits.

Microsoft Edge was the reason I stopped using windows.
It always ran in the background plus the Widgets thing in windows 11 was complete garbage and required microsoft edge runtime to function. I deleted microsoft edge and the search, the start and the widgets were all broken(at the same time the performance became superb). If Vivaldi is running slowly its not because vivaldi is slow, its because edge is running in the background and eating all the ram and cpu.

Hi, you can disable running Edge in the background but I let it run and it takes about 60 MB or something. No problems so far.
If you change to Linux Vivaldi runs even faster and start faster, try it if you not already doing.
Anyway, we get a bit of topic, I will get back to the OP`s problems.

@mib2berlin edge occupies 60 MB in background. True but microsoft edge runtime is the thing that consumes most of the ram 200+mb and can't be disabled. See task manager and try to forcefully kill it and it starts again. that's microsoft trying to inbuilt edge so deep in windows that other browsers are just like an extra. In android also we have android webview but it can be disabled easily and disabling it does not break any android features.
Btw I use only Live operating system so my vivaldi launches faster than anybody else because the entire operating system along with vivaldi is already in the ram. Am am just so used to this fast performance that any operating system installed on the ssd feels like a snail.

Ah OK, I remember Puppy Linux, incredibly fast.
I have no Edge runtime running in backgound an I have Edge and Edge Canary installed.

Anyway, there is not much difference compare Vivaldi and Edge performance wise for me.
May I ask what OS you are using next to Windows?

Hi,
I have 16GB of memory, so enough for Edge or Firefox or Vivaldi.
I stopped to use Firefox because it uses a lot of memory. But I see Vivaldi too.
I use BitDefender, but Firefox is faster than Vivaldi displaying pages and pics.
I have deselected some BitDefender options without success.

@mmseguy , look in the Firewall settings, you'll see that Windows by default settings, put Vivaldi to permit the access only in private WiFi, switching to Edge and Bing in public WiFi, even though Vivaldi is set as the default browser.
That means, that Windows obstaculize Vivaldi, if you don't change even the hidden settings in Windows, at least when it's not one of the "official" browsers, like Chrome or Firefox, which you can find also in the MS Store, but not Vivaldi.

Hi peoples, vivaldi is good and fast enough for me compared to edge, firefox and internet explorer. I had modified win10 which edge has been removed. There is also a modified win11 from the above link.
