Solved Allow hiding the search command from address bar dropdown

I like to bump that thread again
is there a now a plan to disable suggestions at all or at least remove that line for default search?
can i do something to start or improve progress here? -
Bump!
I just like you to know that I'm still interested in an option to remove search suggestions in the address bar (or at least not on the first line) - but still have the search functionality enabled.
It's a bit annoying if I always need to press arrow down twice (instead of 0 times) to have the most frequently visited page selected. -
It was quite annoying indeed. Solved it with just one click.!
Deselect the option "Search in Address Field" and done.
You can copy my setting to make the Vivaldi address bar look like Chrome.
Doing this, the search bar looks like:
Enjoy and don't forget to have a great day.
-
This inspired me to remove Google search altogether: both from Vivaldi itself, and from my Surfingkeys search aliases.
-
Just another request to allow us to remove this, it's redundant and useless.
Typing something and hitting enter is exactly the same as down + enter, it just wasted space and adds clutter to the address bar. -
@randpc It is already removable.

Can you please elaborate... it's still the same as far as i can tell. Using 4.0.2312.24.

@7twenty You can remove the Google search engine, you can turn off search suggestions in the addressbar, you can turn off suggestions in the search bar, you can remove the search bar, you can turn off bookmark preference for drop-down, you can turn off search in the addressbar, etc. Which of these things do you want to do?

None of those.
As stated in the first post - remove the "Search <search engine>" section from the dropdown, while leaving the ability to search from the address bar.
-
@7twenty So I just set up an instance to search from the address bar with no drop down at all. How would you modify that to suit you?

@7twenty Good night. Talk with you tomorrow.

I'm unsure where this is getting lost in translation?
The request is to remove ONLY that element from the drop down, leaving all the other options showing.
This post further elaborates what the first post showed and what is being requested.

Come on guys, that's basically the only thing preventing me from using Vivaldi.
Please give us a setting to remove that option from the dropdown, while still being able to search from the address bar, just by hitting enter
-
@kakato10 If you turn everything off except for "search from address bar" it will still type a line after the search engine icon below the address bar as you type in the URL field. That's to visually show you that if you press "enter," it will search. There is no way at present to turn that off.

People don't have a problem with a visual indicator; the problem is precisely that it's not just a visual indicator, but a selectable line. So if you press "enter," it will search, yes; but if you press "down" and then "enter" it will do the exact same thing! Reaching the first suggestion/typed history item needlessly requires two "down" presses.

I decided to bite the bullet and disable search in the address field to avoid this issue. Instead, I have been forcing myself to use the separate search field. But this made things worse, due to a Vivaldi bug.
See the demonstration I made using a new Vivaldi profile. I first make a search for Vivaldi on Wikipedia using its keyword 'w'. Then I visit Vivaldi browser's Wikipedia page by typing its URL. Those are the only two pages I visited. "Search in Address Field" is disabled.
First, I type vivaldi in the address field. Then, I press the down arrow five times. Follow the monstrosity in the GIF of 6 frames below:
- First down press brings me to the first result. Great! No more of that "first down arrow does nothing" nonsense, all I needed to do was sacrifice searching in address field.
- Another down press. I should now navigate to the Vivaldi search in Wikipedia. What's that? That pointless line reappeared, everything shifted below. I was supposed to select the second item, but still the first item appears to be highlighted, as if I didn't move. But the address field content actually changed to "w vivaldi"
- Another down press. Now I actually moved to the second item, as the highlight shows, but the address field content is the same.
- Another down press. I was supposed to reach the third item, but the highlight shows now I am at the fourth item "amazon"! That infamous line disappeared and everything shifted up again. But the address field shows that third item's content "bookingcom", contradicting the shown selection.
- Another down press. No idea where I'll end up at. OK, the fifth item "ebay" is highlighted, and that item is in the address field as well. We are back to being consistent! But we completely skipped the fourth item "amazon", no way to navigate to that URL!
At this point it's possible to reach the fourth item "amazon" by another up arrow press. So the only way of navigating to the fourth item is five downs and one up. So simple and intuitive, right?
This is just a single search item polluting the Typed History, and it's already undecipherable. I have thousands such, intertwined with the thousands of URLs I actually typed. As I type a query and press down arrows, at no point I have any idea which item is actually selected, how many key presses are needed to navigate to the item I want, everything constantly shifts up and down etc. It's a huge mess.

Incidentally, this bug could have been avoided if Vivaldi weren't insistent on saving search queries as "Typed History", mixing with the actual URLs that I typed. This happens even when I select and right click word in the page and make a search. Now that's recorded as "Typed History", where's the sense in that? I now never use Vivaldi's own context menu searches, partly for that reason (I instead use a mod/extension to add search engines, which has the added benefit of not having to go to the submenus); but keyword searches are even harder to avoid. I figured disabling search in address bar and forcing myself to use the search field would help, but no; when I type "w vivaldi" in the search field, it is recorded in the address field's history instead of search field history. Then what's the point of a separate search field?
Anyway, I found a workaround: using the search field, I need to type "w " (search keyword and a space), then delete it all, then type my search query and press enter. Then it is saved in the search history and not the typed URL history. A bit tedious, but the only way I could find.
But even if I train myself to consistently use this method, I am still faced with thousands of keywords searches polluting my Typed History. And the address field dropdown is unnavigable with search in the address field disabled. I tried deleting them one by one, i.e. typing "g " in the address field and then clicking 'x' or pressing Shift+Del. I deleted more than hundred, but this would take days to do, with my years of browsing history, so I gave up. Maybe some time I can figure out where Typed History is stored and try to manipulate that (SQLite?) database manually.

Upvote!
Come on guys! This is literally one of the things preventing me from using Vivaldi everyday. I'm constantly checking to see if you've add this as an option.
I mean I think that it's pretty obvious that entering a random set of words in the address bar and hitting enter will trigger SE search. It's common sense. Users don't need a hint for that.

Bump... Any progress here?

Looks like this was removed in V6!
Now i just have to get rid of the muscle memory of always pressing down twice to get to the item i want.
