Vivaldi on... Brave Search?
-
Today, the folks over at Brave released their new search engine, and I wanted to see if it recognized Vivaldi's user agent.
Now, as most of us know, Vivaldi no longer presents its full user agent to websites except for a handful few websites, like their own and a few search engines.
Brave Search was not an exception, which was to be expected, but I wanted to see how the page would react if I manually forced Vivaldi to display its full user agent. To my surprise, Brave Search actually recognized it! (and gave instructions specific to Vivaldi too)
You can see below the instructions the folks over at Brave gave to us Vivaldians. Though it seems as though they are unaware of the "Add as search engine..." feature.
Silly long instructions

@altcode Well, finally I have something to use that free 'b' nickname for
-
I already started using brave search and added it to all my search engines, having
b
as shortcut. So far it is giving rather usable search results so it is quite resonable to use it as standard.
(My list of search engines has 28 entries. That is why I still have a lot of options if Brave doesn't provide the results I want to get.)

Thanks for sharing, I was struggling with this as the instructions for Vivaldi are slightly different for Chrome. The only thing that doesn't work is search suggestions.
-
@itruth There are no search suggestions for this search (yet?), not even when using Brave. However, why would you want to send everything you type to their server in the first place?

@itruth [W]hy would you want to send everything you type to their server in the first place?
You answered your own question: If you want search-suggestions.
-
Could someone help me out with the URL and Suggest URL so that the omnifield in Vivaldi sends me directly to Brave Search?
-
@geirag Adjust your search suggestions URL
https://search.brave.com/api/suggest?q=%s
and try again. -

Thank you for the tip but this return rubbish from the omnifield. However, this seems to work:
https://search.brave.com/search?q=%s -
@geirag That’s the normal search url. Are you telling me it works when used as suggest url too? Anyway, if you’re happy all is fine, I never use search suggestions and haven’t tested it tbh.
-
@luetage Both as URL and Suggest URL. Just want my omnifield to either open a website or ask a search engine, and now that DuckDuckGo is turning woke and Brave seems to be the best alternative, I am happy I made it work (until Vivaldi pre-configures Brave Search).
-
Thanks for all the info. DuckDuckGo has just confirmed what I've assumed for a while now. They're manipulating search results. Done with them forever now.
-
@joeblow90 Yes, that's why I asked in the German forum for alternatives.
Metager was recommended in the answers. -
