Option to Disable the Confirm Download Dialog
-
@Gwen-Dragon I don't understand one thing tho.
Vivaldi runs on Chromium and ask every single time if I want to keep executables- it's driving me insane.
Chrome, Opera, Edge - they also run on Chromium but never ask me if I want to keep the file I'm downloading.
And Chromium developers are to blame?!
To be blunt: The download experience in Vivaldi is trash compared to other browsers - I love what the browser stands for but it's the only one that handles downloads differently, to my great annoyance. It's supposed to be a browser for power users yet I'm being treated like someone who doesn't even know what they're downloading. -
@Gwen-Dragon
No one can make a bug free product nowadays, so no expectations there. But this thread was opened over 3 years ago.
That's very discouraging and frankly too much time given to fix an annoying issue.
We'll see if I get used to it first or get annoyed enough to jump ship. Given how much I hate the extra clicks I fear it will be the latter. -

I made a feature request in 2019 But was not assign to a dev in meantime.
VB-55511 "Remember choice of download confirmation (Keep or Skip) for future"Vivaldi isn't even fully aware of that confirmation dialog, because if you select Cancel instead of Keep, the download will keep indefinitely looping to 0 bytes and never ends. You have to manually remove it from the download list and retry, this time selecting Keep. The whole thing must be eradicated from the root of the chromium sources. I bet it won't be touched for <airquoting> SeCuRiTy ReaSoNs!11! </airquoting> (yes, I'm really pissed)
-
@Gwen-Dragon I can't believe it doesn't happen anymore but you're right, I just tried to download an unsigned .exe, cancel instead of keep and it isn't even in the download panel. I can only imagine it only happened in the 32 bit version? I don't know anymore. I have to test on my old win7 32bit work pc.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Ok I stand corrected. Even on the 32bit version of Vivaldi 3.8.2259.32, on my Win7 32bit old PC, cancel doesn't leave the never ending download anymore. Which is a better deal than before, indeed.
-
would REALLY like to see this implemented: confirming every download is a serious time wasting nuisance. If this popped up for a good reason (known dodgy site) then it would make some sense.
-
@Gwen-Dragon you misunderstood me, I said there is no more any issue of infinite download stuck on downloads when cancelling the confirmation, verified in both my PCs win10 64bit and win7 32bit. Nothing to report.

I have an additional problem with this horrible nag popup. Every time I click "keep" the browser immediately shuts down and the resulting file is there but it does not have a real name or extension. It still has the temporary file name assigned while downloading the file extension 'download'. I have to then rename the file in order to use it.
I've been using Vivaldi for years now and this issue has only started for me in the last few weeks, although I understand this nag popup has been a problem since at least 2018 or before.

Upvote for this too. Very annoyance.

And the really, really stupid thing about it is that it asks you AFTER the file has finished downloading!...
So download a 500MB exe ... accidently click "Cancel" ... and whops you have to download 500MB again
... it works this out from the extension ... it can work out if it is harmful BEFOREHAND!Also it would be good if it ALWAYS asked where to save a file in the first place, sometimes it does, and sometimes it just downloads stuff to my download folder?
-
Upvoted. Seriously annoying, especially when setting up a new computer.
If dumb people are gonna download malicious .exe files, is this prompt going to stop them from pressing 'next/allow' (or whatever) in a simple dialog window?
-
I agree that the download experience is pretty bad overall at the moment. In Chrome, Edge, and Firefox it's much less intrusive, while it's very clear what's going on. In Vivaldi you either have no idea something is downloading or endure the whole left panel opening and taking a large portion of the screen.
But this super-intrusive pop-up is just the worst thing ever. I accidentally clicked cancel a couple of times just because I was doing something else and the dialog appeared out of nowhere. Very poor UX.

This is not true. You can show the Panel Toolbar without having the download panel open. In Settings, Downloads, disable:
Open Download Panel AutomaticallyShow/Hide the Download Panel with default shortcut, Ctrl+Shift+D. Do not use F4, this will hide the Panel Toolbar.

This problem started happening to me yesterday. The only major change that happened was that I reinstalled windows 10 to get it ready for windows 11, with the whole TPM thing. before that, never had this problem.
Another thing that I noticed is that there are 2 settings that affect this:
In Tools > Setting > Downloads, you got the Always save on default location without asking option. This one does nothing to stop the message.
but on vivaldi://settings/downloads , there is a Ask where to save each file before download. This one stops the message, but will force to save as all the time.
Checking both is the only way to avoid the confirm prompt and not having to clicks twice to save a file.
I'm using the latest snapshot (4.2.2406.4).

"And the really, really stupid thing about it is that it asks you AFTER the file has finished downloading!..."
as far as I can see, they started writing about this problem in 2018 y, but nothing changes, alas...

Upvoting, too. Please give us an option to disable this confirmation.

This post is deleted! -
@PoooMukkel It would be great if you could turn it off

@Norway174
There is a setting in Downloads working for me > "Save Files to default location without asking", does it not work for you?Cheers, mib
That's why I am not seeing it. I was wondering about that.
Still I am upvoting it. Power users should have this type of control.

In private mode, even though I turned it off, it still shows the dialog. Is it a bug?
