Synced tabs DOA
-
I've been using Vivaldi for the past 4-8 weeks and generally like the way the UI operates over other browsers.
But I just can't figure out how synced tabs are supposed to work
On mobile, when I go to tabs I see: open, incognito, synced, closed
Open and incognito allow you to (+) open new tabs, synced does not.
How do I open a new tab on mobile that I want to sync to desktop?
Likewise on desktop, I see the sync tab icon but clicking it does nothing. Drag click open tab onto the sync tab icon does nothing. This post is nearly 18 months old.
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/40359/how-to-share-tabs-between-devices-send-tab-to-computer
Do you really still need to go into flags to enable sync'ed tabs?
I tried it, still does not work.
Is there a better guide on how to use sync tabs? This also does not help
https://help.vivaldi.com/android/android-browse/android-tabs/#Synced_TabsWhen you open a tab from Synced Tabs, it will be opened locally and listed with your other Tabs.
HOW?!
What on earth do you tap/click to "open a tab from synced tabs"? -
@Edward802
Hi, no flag is needed anymore, it should automatically sync all open tabs on all devices.
I open 4 tabs in my mobile and a minute later I can reach them from my desktop. One is my second mobile, localhost is my second desktop.
Some user report it does nor work on there mobile devices, sometimes restart the device helps.Cheers, mib

Do sync'ed tabs supposed to work if you are NOT 'synchronizing all data'?
There is no option for sync'ed tabs when you choose 'selected data'?What do you click on desktop to present the screen you posted?
Nothing like that appear within the tab cycler, or the panel that contains bookmarks, downloads, history, etc. What do you tap on mobile to open new sync'ed tab?
On normal tab I can tap (+) but sync tab page has no (+) control -
@mib2berlin I am having the same issue. I know I have a fuckton of tabs (just ported 318 from one Firefox to another) but Firefox managed but my mobile Vivaldi says it synced, and desktop Vivaldi said it synced and neither are showing tabs or bookmarks for the other. I am using sync all too.
Edit: A fresh Vivaldi synced fine with a Vivaldi on another (Fedora) desktop. My issue is between android and Win10.

@Edward802 synced tabs are called remote sessions in Sync settings, so make sure to enable "Typed History and Remote Sessions" in Synchronise Selected Data. Then you should start seeing Sync's cloud button on the Tab Bar next to the recently closed tabs (trashcan button).
Both on desktop and mobile you'll see a list of tabs that are open on other synced devices. By clicking/tapping on one of the tabs, you can open it on your current device.
It's not possible to open new tabs in the Synced Tabs menu. -
@spaztastical Make sure to write your username identically on all synced devices. For example, if you've logged in with spaztastical on one device don't log in with Spaztastical on another. There unfortunately is a bug in Sync at the moment making Sync sensitive to capitalisation and other small differences.

@jane-n Okay, that kind of fixed it partially? Now my phone can see desktop bookmarks and saved session, and the desktop sees some bookmarks from mobile. However, desktop is only picking up 25 tabs from my phone and I know I have been over 99 for over a year (curious what the total count will be) and is not getting the mobile bookmarks folder. I tried closing mobile vivaldi, then desktop vivaldi, then opening mobile back up and waiting for all the tabs to repopulate and then opened desktop but that did not help - only the newest 24-27 tabs (changes as I open or close some).
-
@jane-n Do you have any other ideas? I tried the experimental grouping on mobile per another thread but it did not give an option to force share tabs in bulk to desktop, nothing on bookmark all tabs, and it did not trigger desktop finding more tabs from my phone. I found out I have over 2k tabs on my phone those, and grouped them into a few groups of 200-500 tabs each.
-
Unfortunately the bookmarks in the default 'Mobile Bookmarks' folder are currently not synced with desktop (confirmed bug in the bug tracking system).
I tested remote tab sync with 50 tabs open on Android and they all were synced with Desktop.
I did find a bug report that we were never able to reproduce, where tabs that weren't visited in a long time were not synced anymore. With hundreds of tabs open, I doubt that you visited them all in the past day or two, right?
What if you "open" these tabs, are they then synced? To quickly switch tabs, I suggest swiping left/right on the Address bar or bottom toolbar. Also, the tab grouping feature is Chromium's experiment (hence hidden behind a flag) and officially not supported by Vivaldi (yet).
PS! Out of curiosity, how's the browser's performance with so many tabs open?
-
For an app that gets so many other parts right, disappointed here.
"Synced tabs" does not sound like "Remote Sessions"
Why not use the same term in both places?!I turned that on, and now ALL tabs are synced.
So synced tabs should really be called "Sync All tabs"
Don't really want that. Is there some other feature to send a single tab from one device to another? -

Yes, there is.
The below assumes you already have sync set up on both your devices.
Desktop → Android
Right-Click
on the page you want to share- Select
Send to [YOUR DEVICE HERE]
- Go to your Android, wait for the notification or popup in Vivaldi, and Tap it to open the page
Sending the Tab The Notificiation
Android → Desktop
- Tap the Vivaldi
Menu Button
- Select
Share...
- Select
Send to your devices
- Select the device you want to send it to
- Go to your Desktop, wait for the notification, and click it to open the page
Sending the Tab The Notificiation
There can be a bit of a delay if your sharing happens right after a sync has already occurred. Other times it is almost instantaneous.
If I am in a hurry...
- on Desktop I go to
vivaldi://sync-internals
and selectTrigger GetUpdates
. - on Android I go to the synced tabs section which triggers an update. (You can also go to the same URL from Desktop.)
-
- I saw about the "mobile" folder not syncing and got those move - no big deal.
- 2294, more now probably. Still not picking up the old ones, only new ones. The person in the other thread kept swearing the groups would show up but they cannot even "share with desktop" so the groups just made more of a mess with my tabs more than anything and makes the browser worse to use.
- correct, not opened recently
- 2000+ tabs. That is more inane than the grouping that took days because it needed a bunch of restarts.
- I started with Brave on this phone, then added vivaldi when mobile showed up. A previous phone would have the browser crash pretty frequently but they haven't crashed at all on the Note 8. Well, except for groups. With groups it would freeze or take a while, and then two restarts after anything done with groups to get it to register correctly. On mobile vivaldi is just like any browser, except I have found the lack of working sync or even "bookmark all tabs" sorely lacking and will be looking for an alternative. On desktop I like it a lot but it is kinda pointless if I cannot use the nice features to sort my tabs from mobile and clean them up.
oh, and groups makes using the mobile browser kinda unusable now, because with each tab opened a black bar at the bottom gets taller so after 2 or 3 I have to go back to the all tabs screen and open the page back up.
-
@nomadic Is there a way to do this with a group, all tabs, or otherwise in bulk?
-
@spaztastical Not the way I described.
The only way is the Sync Cloud Icon and selecting
Window with N tabs on Your Device
, but looking over your other posts, I guess that won't work for you.To refresh your tabs, so they can be synced, did you try what @jane-n suggested?
@jane-n said in Synced tabs DOA:

Select Send to your devices
Not sure what OS version that vid is from?
The android 11 share screen on Pixel 3A does not show anything like that or any items called "Send to your devices"
-
@Edward802 I am on Android 10 with a OnePlus 6T.
Can you scroll down in the
Share
dialog? -
I did. As stated, nothing there called send to device.
Vivaldi print brings up PDF style thing to print to paper. -
@Edward802 Then maybe Sync isn't set up correctly? Have you checked to make sure Sync is working on both devices?
Edit: Assuming you have
Typed History and Remote Sessions
Enabled
in Sync settings...On Desktop, you should be able to see tabs from your phone or other devices when you click the cloud icon in the tab bar.
And on Android, you should be able to see them when you tap on the
tab view
and then select the cloud icon on the bottom. -
After I enabled the option for the mis-named "remote sessions" for sync I see synced tabs on each device from the other device.
So it seems to be setup correctly.
But nothing in share menu on Android 11. -
@Edward802 Sorry, that is about all I can do to help.
Maybe someone with a device on Android 11 can help you. My phone won't get an update to 11 until later this year (if all goes well).
