Startpage and Vivaldi bring more privacy to your search

Similar to SearX, which I have in the list, TOKI (POST default)
-
@Catweazle It really sounds like a fork of Searx.

And looks like it. Its font page is same layout, & its Preferences are unambiguously those of Searx.

-
@hlehyaric I do apologise for my tiresome pedantry. Tis a lifelong affliction. Maybe next time?
-
@Steffie You don't have to apologise. There's nothing wrong in your post as far as I'm concerned. You're always welcome.
-
@hlehyaric I apologise for my apology.
At this rate, pretty soon we'll be into the whole MPFC sketch...
-
@Steffie And we'll be completely off topic, probably berated, maybe banned and exiled .
-
@hlehyaric I didn't expect...

When you set POST in Searx preferences, this setting works only when you run a search from Searx homepage.
When you run a search from V (address field, search field, QC), V setting overrides Searx preferences. Hence the need to tick POST in V setting.Yesterday & today i have made an interesting discovery. Whilst at the moment it makes Vivaldi look a little poor, it nonetheless gives me some hope that the V Devs might be able to fix this for us.
Both Firefox & Falkon provide a dedicated Search field, next to their Address field, just like Vivaldi. When i configure https://searx.ninja [thanks for letting me know of this Instance, @Catweazle, i like it & have now adopted it as my newest default] including of course retaining its POST setting, & then when i search for anything from those two F-browsers' Search field, they both behave exactly as i expected Vivaldi to behave.
That is, they do exactly as i want... whereas V annoyingly takes me only to the Searx landing page rather than my actual search results, these other browsers properly take me directly to their results pages, and they are still POST. V atm will only behave properly if user unticks the POST box... but then as we've already canvassed, that then only uses GET [despite Searx itself set for POST]. Somehow FF & F access & respect the Searx native config, whereas V ignores it.
I wonder if this [FF & F] was also the V Devs' intention thus i have found a bug, or, maybe they did not design it this way [in which case i really would like them to change it to match FF & Falkon, which atm in this specific aspect are superior to V]?
PS: Hardcore Vivaldians won't care about this, but as a point of detail i should qualify that FF Search works as described above only when Searx is NOT in a
Multi-Account Container
. If the user ignorantly or accidentally containerises it, then FF Searx misbehaves identically to the current annoying Vivaldi way. -

Another search engines to try
Metager
Peekier ( preview of the page in the result )
Disconnect Search
Mojeek
Swisscows (semantic search, family friendly, yes or yes) -
@Catweazle Fwiw. My comments for the subset of your post ones that i've had for months.
-
Metager - horrible UI, seems to use only Bing & Scopia, results sometimes mediocre.
-
Mojeek - I was really excited for this one when i first discovered it & read all its good qualities. Then i actually tried it. OMZ, ugh, consistently weird useless results.
-
Swisscows - nice UI [albeit retina-piercing brightness; fixed via Stylus], super-cool name & icon, results mediocre to fair.
Fyi, others:
https://yippy.com/search?query=%s https://www.qwant.com/?client=brz-vivaldi&q=%s https://www.ecosia.org/search?q=%s
IMO those three are quite unimpressive, but fwiw.

-
@Steffie , I know, I put them by chance, of them I have only stayed with P.eekier
-
@luetage Thanks heaps! Reading that guidance was pretty exciting... then i was crushed by bitter reality.
-
Did it in my Snapshot, main profile. Bookmarklet creation & operation was fine. Based all my tests on https://searx.ninja/. New SE created fine, i edited it to be POST in V Settings fine. Gave it a test with a search from V's Search field. Result = failure; i am so sick of seeing that Searx landing page all the time instead of the results page.
-
Repeated the procedure in my Stable, main profile. Result = failure; identically as above.
-
Returned to Snapshot, launched my spare Test profile that uses no extensions, allows cookies, leaves Tracker Blocker globally off. Repeated the procedure. Result = success! OMZ, it worked!
-
Returned to Snapshot, main profile. Disabled all extensions, enabled cookies to match #3, disabled its Tracker Blocker globally, closed & relaunched the window. Retried test with a search from V's Search field. Result = failure. Tried two more fresh times to add Ninja POST, both identical failures [landing page!!!].
Unless i've overlooked something trivial, the horrible unpalatable tentative conclusion might be that ... as has happened sooooo many times to me over the years [gaaaaaaaah], my main profiles of both Snapshot & Stable are corrupt. Extremely disappointing.
Oh, i just realised one difference between Main & Test Snapshot profiles that i'd overlooked in those tests. Whereas in Test, every one of the VivaldiHooks is enabled, in Main only a few are. It's hard to believe that this can be a true factor ... & i feel too despondent atm to bother testing it.

I use swisscows as my homepage and search engine .
-
@Priest72 , Swiscows is certainly a good search engine, especially when having children at home. For me however it is too restrictive and I don't like that there are no configuration options.

Seems interesting. Will try it.
super-cool name & icon
To be fair, that's the main selling point . I really like that name .

Well, jumping juniperberries! This morning i made a stunning, 100% accidental, discovery. Last night's pessimistic tentative conclusion, quoted, is incorrect. In fact this method works perfectly after all, in Snapshot Main, Snapshot Test, & Stable Main, for Searx Ninja POST ... if & only if ... i change one of my 5 years-old V Settings preferences. "Forever" i have deliberately ticked this green-boxed setting:
because i definitely do wish to not obliterate my current tab with a search result whenever i initiate a search from the Search Field. That has always been my desire.
This morning i was once again comparing settings in my Snapshot's Main profile against my Test profile to try again to discover something that might explain last night's 100% success rate in Test vs 100% failure rate in Main. I saw that Test did not have that green-box setting ticked, so i ticked it, not for a moment believing it was significant but just trying to be thorough in my investigation. Instantly from that point on, Test profile incurred a 100% failure rate too, identical to Main. Unticked again, 100% success rate. OMZ!
I repeated that unticking in Stable Main --> 100% success rate. OMZ!
Not really believing it could truly have been this simple all along, holding my breath i finally unticked it in Snapshot Main --> 100% success rate. OMZ^2!
I presume there is something in @QuHno's JavaScript that breaks if the tab changes during execution, but i do not understand JS at all so cannot troubleshoot it. Does anyone here who knows JS have insight into how it might be made compatible with being able to once more use V's green-box setting?

@Steffie Hmm, IΒ tested this and it works from both addressβfield and searchβfield. Both bring me to the results page. Not sure what goes wrong for you.
