a Download button on address bar
-
I know we already have to move the mouse to the bottom of the screen to click SIDEBAR then click DOWNLOADs too see how fast they are downloading and also to access them. To me this is unnecessary ..all other browsers have a button that reveals what's downloading and how long current download has, its just easier and better method IMO - i know you want to be different in many ways but having some similar functions ain't a bad thing, keep both or allow for one to been abled in settings

Keep the sidebar open and you can see the icon just like you can in your other browsers, and downloads is just one click away (like in your other browsers). Or you can toggle the sidebar using F4 (or your preferred shortcut) or bind a mouse gesture to it (if you don't want to use the keyboard).
You can also bind a keyboard shortcut or mouse gesture to open the download panel itself (default is
Ctrl+Shift+D
).
I like Vivaldi's download panel more than other browsers since it shows more information, I can keep it open while doing other stuff, and it is consistent with the rest of Vivaldi's design (i.e. use of side panels). The fact that it is on the side doesn't bother me at all since I use various other web panels, and keep the side bar visible at all times.

I guess this could be a useful request for people who run vivaldi with the status bar and panels hidden - like firefox's UI.
-
Why are you closing the side bar ?
Leave it open, unless you are using an old 4:3 aspect ratio screen.
You can also set Vivaldi to always show the download when it starts. -
@Dr-Flay It is not just about the screen size - though that also matters on laptops and unmaximised windows - many people just prefer to not clutter their view with a sidebar.
I would prefer either a popup like OP suggested or just animate the sidebar's downloads icon and make it movable to the toolbar.

The Download Icon on the Panel Toolbar is already animated to show the download progress. One can show the Panel Toolbar without showing the side panel. I assigned shortcuts to all of the side panels:
- Ctrl+1 = Bookmarks
- Ctrl+2 = Downloads
- Ctrl+3 = Reserved for Mail
- Ctrl+4 = Reserved for Contacts
- Ctrl+5 = Notes, etc.
Usually, I use F4 or a Mouse Gesture to toggle the active Panel, but the above shortcuts might suit your needs better.

@Pesala this seems a good suggestion to me, as I don't even have the address bar.... The only remaining inconvenience is that these shortcuts could not close the side panel... I have to use the Fn+F4 to close it on my compact keyboard...
-
@zhangdl You could assign any other more convenient shortcut to "Panel" as well as F4. How about Ctrl + ` (the key to the left of 1)?
-
@Pesala No, I couldn't. Ctrl+` is also what I prefer to set as an alternative to F4, but it does not work.... there is no error messages.... does it work for you?
I'm using
Vivaldi 2.6.1566.44 (Stable channel) (64-bit) Revision b104196d10e5b12a2690fe28e511909c2f4dcf4b OS Linux
