Please make a one-click-away floating downloads list like in Opera (screenshot below). It is quick to use and quick to dismiss and it does not resize web page content canvas.

          Thank you!

@nostromo You can turn on floating panels for now - unless that makes a real problem for you with notes, history, bookmarks, etc.

@ayespy For that situation it's good to have a shortcut for “Toggle Floating Panel” (I have Ctrl+Alt+F)

@potmeklecbohdan One can also Click on the Show/Hide Panel icon in the Status Bar. One can set a shortcut to open the Downloads Panel too (Ctrl+Shift+D is the default shortcut). F4 will hide the Panel toolbar.

Ah, there is indeed an option for the panels to be floating. Unfortunately the option 'Auto-Close Inactive Panel' doesn't seem to work. Once open the panel won't close automatically, having to press F4 manually.

Also the panel albeit being quite thin still causes content resize when opening-closing.

One more thing. With the panel being closed there is no download start or progress indication like on a picture below.

Actually the download button in Vivaldi seems to be be drag-n-droppable to where I want it, event the vertical line is being drawn but finally it doesn't drop there. See below.

I apologize if these things are not Vivaldi style. I am currently transitioning from Opera and having hard time finding things are different of what I used to see.

(I think it should be moved to the "Address bar" category)

Downloads button is a must because it is like indicator which shows status of downloads. I prefer to hide both status bar and side panels to maximize space for web pages. Additionally I don't like when browser window is asymmetric - one border is narrow 1 pixel wide, and another is toolbar. So I completely hide side bars and side toolbar. When I do it I almost have no idea whether downloads are still in progress or are complete. On Windows (and maybe Mac and Linux) there could be progress bar in the system task bar, which shows downloads progress. But it is on the bottom of the screen and is much less noticeable then the downloads button in other browsers. So I beg developers - please add this button. Of course there could be option to remove it for users which don't like it. And they will use the downloads panel. But I anticipate this feature very much.
Additionally this will let users of other browsers to migrate to Vivaldi more easily because this behavior will be more familiar for them. FF, Opera, Safari have such downloads button. In Chrome it's little different - each download has it's own button, but the idea is still the same - clearly show downloads status. But it has disadvantages - it takes more space and bottom of the screen is less noticeable IMO

@knvs finally made some effort to get google working in a private window so I could check these out.

unfortunately, not a single one of these have a progress bar integrated right into the icon
(not worth using if it still requires 1 click to see total download progress)
at least Download Manager seems to make a minor effort to do a bit more than the rest on that...

buuuut both Firefox and Opera still have everything beat there.
(no clicks needed, total download progress is displayed in the icon)
^ firefox even beats opera by displaying remaining time

@Tcll If you want, there are two Mods that can achieve what you're looking for (if I understand it correctly) :

                                    The button :
                                    alt text

Colorful Download Panel Progress Button CSS mod

                                    The progress bar :
                                    alt text
Colorful Download Panel Progress Bar CSS mod

@Ornorm eh, just the first mod (excluding the nifty custom colors) 😉
if I can get that between my account icon and the separator in the toolbar, then that solves it for me 🙂
(I'll settle for an extension that can give me that though)

EDIT: btw, I upvoted just for those who like the sidebar (not me personally)

As a suggestion: may it is possible just to "move" sidebar buttons panel to "extensions button area". All or just some buttons?

Like the idea of having an indicator for downloads with a button for a popup if you have more than one download going. My suggestion is to have them in the status bar.

This is like a floating web panel that can be attached either to the panel toolbar or any other toolbars. A web panel which is dropped into a bubble from a button. Firefox can do that for its history panel : short and quick history into a bubble, longer one into a sidebar anchored, and full version into a floating dedicated library window.
This is the same download web panel, but anchored elsewhere.

You have to evaluate simply your downloads without loosing your current web panel. When you have a lot of download elements, a more heavy solution like sidebar/web panel is then better.

Notice the scale flashing of the icon when downloads have finished (second image). This is a good solution to get user's attention. It seems that vivaldi has no solution to get attention when downloads queue is completed.
The color palette that @Ornorm suggests get easier to know how the download queue status is indeed.
But I'm nostalgic of the old firefox icon, this with duration indication from first image. Because the last 5% may take one minute as one hour, it depends how large are the files downloaded. And when you did severals, or your download a long file, you often forget time needs.
