Resizable Tab Tiling – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.16.1230.3
-
A most remarkable & unpleasant incident occurred to my SS this morning. Having behaved impeccably to that point, this incident shocked me.
I opened a bookmarked site that i regularly visit to stream a weekly local politics show by ABC that i enjoy. The tab opened fine. I clicked its embedded button to start the stream, at which point the entire V-SS UI vanished. I was so stunned that for a few seconds i could only stare dumbly at the empty screen wondering if i was only dreaming [no coffee at that stage; eeek]. Before i recovered my wits to investigate, beginning with checking if all V's processes had really ended, the V UI reappeared!
Momentarily it all seemed normal & fine, but i soon realised that 5 previously opened tabs now were missing. Most were still present, stacked where they were before, & stacked+pinned where they were before, as well as some individual unpinned tabs. Of the missing 5, 2 had been stacked & pinned together, 2 had been stacked but not pinned, & one had been part of an unpinned stack of 3 [of which 2 still survived just fine, still stacked, but wondering where their sister had gone].
Since the earliest days of V allowing Chrome Extensions to be installed, one of those i've used continuously is Session Buddy. For the past couple of years V-SS has been so stable, so reliable, so dependable, that many times i've debated with myself whether i can/should finally remove it. Each time i decided to keep it, as once in every second blue moon V gets affected by a passing sunspot & has a wobbly causing session loss, & those times SB has greatly helped me recover. It did so again this morning, phew.
As best i recall V has never done this specific thing to me before, & i hope it never repeats. BTW, writing this now in V-SS & of course so far all behaviour seems totally good again. Weird!!!

@steffie: Well, yes (but I don't think I ever objected to that.)
Unfortunately I have to admit that there is one program that I use that doesn't work with Wine and within a VM it doesn't perform well enough. And that is more or less the only reason I keep a Win7 installation on my dual boot computers. If I had to I'd be willing to extend MS lfespan on my hardware until 2023 with Win8.1&ClassicShell but Win10 will most likely never be allowed to handle my personal data.
To come to full circle again: great to have Vivaldi on both operating systems. -
@rogerwilco Oh no, pls don't worry, i was not having a go at you in any way... it was just me trying to be wry again [aka, insufferably stupid].
Interestingly in reading your reply i experienced an apparent bug others have [i think] mentioned, but is new to me. To understand to which post of mine you were replying i clicked the link. However after the jump, no Mouse Gestures worked at all, until i refreshed the page the old-school way via the UI button. Not good.

@saudiqbal confirmed -- this is an old, old, nasty bug.

@pesala Strange, under "Next Tab (Recent)" I have "Switch to Tab 1"; there are no move active tab commands. I am on Intel Core i7-6700HQ, 16 GB, on Win 10 64-bit, and Vivaldi 1.15.1147.52. I would have loved to add those shortcuts myself right now, but apparently something is wrong with my installation; I guess I will wait for 1.16 and if I still don't get the move tab commands, I will have to try a clean installation, though I am not sure if that would help.
But maybe I misunderstand you and the article; when the article says "a while back" and when you say "for some time" does it only mean the snapshots of 1.16? I had assumed it meant that it had been introduced earlier (without predefined shortcuts) in earlier stable versions, so I was supposed to have it already by now. If earlier means earlier 1.16 snapshots, then I don't have anything to worry about.
-
I skipped the last few snapshots, so if this a known issue, feel free to ignore this post.
I am noticing an oddity with favicons on some sites, like Google and LinkedIn. It seems the favicon is being duplicated multiple times, really small, at the top of the favicon section of a tab. A handy screen grab is provided for your viewing (and hopefully bugfixing) pleasure.
Hardly an earth shattering bug, but surprisingly annoying.

Darn it! Fill in boxes aren't typing in have no idea what is going on FF OK.
Same extensions on both only three. Ublock origin, Blur only masked Email, all else off and invisible hand. Other problems ever since update chromium ver 64 to 67 many problems.
I exit out of Vivaldi have MSprocess viewer 30 min later 12 Vivaldi tabs STILL running have to manually kill them.

@dovelove
Hi, cant verify on Windows 10/64 1803.
May you check vivaldi://settings and search for "hardware".
"Continue running background apps when Vivaldi is closed" should be unchecked.
May one of your extensions keep Vivaldi open.
I don´t understand "Fill in boxes aren't typing "?Cheers, mib

Hey,
since the latest snapshot the browser crashes when I open the dev-window (CTRL+SHIFT+I), both shortcut and right click selection.
The hover panel also randomely isn't closing when Tab is reselected. Are there plans to add an option on every panel to make it hover? -
@gilgamensch There is a feature request for it, but currently you can only set it globally for all panels.

This snapshot has been the poopiest snapshot I have installed so far. I am on Ubuntu x64 using latest 64 bit snapshot. Vivaldi crashed several times but it did consistently when I grouped a youtube video and twitter feed into a tab. The moment I tried to tile them Vivaldi started reloading both pages until it crashed. When I started Vivaldi, tab stack was there, had 2 tabs untiled. The moment I tried to tile, crash crash crash! It happened every single time. Hopefully this bug is reproducible and will be fixed with the next snapshot since I have been craving for resizable tiles for ages

Mouse Gesture "close tab" does not function since 1.16.1221.3 (new Chromium version)After drawing the gesture the tab does not close, but the right click menu opens.
- On the Amazon website there is another behavior:
After drawing the gesture the next Amazon website opens. The website with article 20-30, after that 31-40 and so on.

And the worst just happened. After a crash I lost all the tabs.
I believe several months ago I had asked for a feature: save last 10 sessions so that during a crash at least I can go back and restore a useful one which was ignored. The oldest session I had backed up is from 2017-06-06. I am extremely frustrated at the moment.
Please add "save last 10 sessions automatically" feature ASAP. -
@paralaks ...but in the meantime, install Session Buddy. It saved my bacon once again within the last week. My V-SS is generally stable & reliable over the long-term, but once in a while some wobbly occurs & i lose tab or tabs. SB at those times is a great help. V's native History tool is fabulous, but there are some crash times when SB is easier & faster for efficient tab recovery than needing to interrogate History.

I will give SB a try. Thanks. It seems like Vivaldi is having issues after a certain number of tabs. Backup has less tabs and it seems to be working better. I still think automatically saving last 10 sessions is neither a difficult feature to implement nor a price tag can be put on it

Not for me [using V since Feb 2015]. I do not use hundreds of tabs simultaneously, but i commonly use several dozen simultaneously, & my V's [SS & Stable, though SS is my daily default] are no less stable that way than on the rarer occasions i only have a dozen active tabs.
If your V crashes as often as implied, then [once you have eliminated a corrupt profile, or a bad extension], IMO SB would be even more useful for you than me.

I don't get hardware choice with that command.. I meant all enter data passwords etc in webpage entry
-
@steffie I had about 40 or so tabs and until the current snapshot everything worked perfectly fine. I blame "1.16.1230.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit)" on Linux though. It seems like Windows users are doing fine.
