Can't send mails over imap.vivaldi.net with Thunderbird anymore
-
Hello, after trying to set the new settings from here in the forum. I get an error message when sending a mail that the server answered with a false message. I can't paste it here because the spam filter is not allowing it. It just starts with "OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1..."
Thank you for helping.
-
Thats the full server message:
OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE LITERAL+ AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN] Dovecot ready..That message is unexpected by Thunderbird, so its not sending mails.

Vivaldi changed the servers: you need to manually change them in Thunderbird settings.
Choose one of the two servers, below (incoming server):
IMAP: imap.vivaldi.net, Port: 143, Authentication method: normal password, Connection security: STARTTLS
POP3: pop3.vivaldi.net, Port: 110, Authentication method: normal password, Connection security: STARTTLS...or, instead, one of the following (incoming server):
IMAPs: imap.vivaldi.net, Port: 993, Authentication method: normal password, Connection security: SSL/TLS
POP3s: pop3.vivaldi.net, Port: 995, Authentication method: normal password, Connection security: SSL/TLSSet the following sending server (outgoing server):
SMTP: smtp.vivaldi.net, Port: 587, Authentication method: normal password, Connection security: STARTTLS@pesala, @An_dz: how comes that @Filla-IT didn't have any answer?

@newscpq I don't know, I don't keep track of this area of the forums.

@newscpq
Ah, nice. Thank you. Why was there no information mail about this? Changing servers issnt nice -
@filla-it There was notice in a blog post and in an email sent to users.
-
@filla-it splitting SMTP and IMAP servers is not possible with an identical DNS entry.
The alternate approach would have been to not be able to receive mails with the old (mail.vivaldi.net
) client settings. The interesting question would be how Thunderbird managed to:
- detect there is no longer a SMTP server on
mail.vivaldi.net
- fails to give the user any useful information about that error
- try an IMAP port instead
- complain when it gets the correct server message for that port.
Or is there some (failing) autoconfig mechanism on
vivaldi.net
I am missing?- no ISPDB entry
- (bad) main site redirect for config server endpoints
- no SRV records
- ?
- detect there is no longer a SMTP server on

There was: you should have an e-mail in your inbox, but it was rather late (sent the same day of the change) and ambiguous: the subject deals with a "scheduled downtime" (that usually isn't a server change) and about some change in "mailbox settings".
I think they could have done it much better

@gwen-dragon whops, missed @filla-it already changed the settings (in an obviously wrong way) for the new setup…
By the looks of it: Entered the IMAP settings for SMTP.
-
@gwen-dragon and also the wrong port if he can connect and gets an IMAP status message.
-
@filla-it port 587 for mail submission is preferred.
@gwen-dragon port 25 should only be used for Server2Server transport (e.g. Vivaldi server → Google server), in essential, endpoints with MX records.
There may be differents in feature sets for port 25 and 587 (login, accepting mails from/for foreign mail adresses).

I am a server admin on my own root servers.
I could have guessed. It was ment as a general remark and should not have been directed at you.
Can I get away with blaming bad wording over my surprise about you referring to a non-optimal configuration?--
does not work for me.
tried smtp.vivaldi.net and mail.vivaldi.net without success. -
@UheyKen
IMAP: mail.vivaldi.net - port: 993
SMTP: smtp.vivaldi.net - port: 465

https://imap.vivaldi.net/webmail/ -
And that's it what did not work. You should add that you have to login too. After that it starte working. Nice. thx for help

I don't get it. Here we are in October 2019 and still having issues with Thunderbird
I have tried all options I could read on the forum, to no avail. Thunderbird block with a certificate issue .. No matter what IMAP(s) POP3, whatever.. The certificate issue pops up (no punt meant).
ANd yet, it used to work..
So please, I am no computer savvy, just a simple bloke who like a simple solution to an unexplainable issue.
Your comprehension and patient help is appreciated in advance.
I love Vivaldi during all seasons. -
