Sync: Status update
-
We have been a bit quiet on the Sync front but that’s only because we’ve been very busy working on the Sync server. Take a look at this important timeline.

Good to be kept in the know. Good luck (if it's even needed) with the re-launch.
-
On my main box, I have had the message 'Failed to commit data to server' for the last ~2 weeks. (Sync data successfully downloaded). I have about 5 or six other instances of V snapshot which are all fine.
Is there a data cap limit? The box which fails has about 300+ tabs.
Also, do things like custom mouse gestures get synced?
I'm still not sure how I should designate a 'master' box, so that its settings are mirrored on all other instances.
-
I don't know, I consider sync an extra feature that makes no sense before core is ready
And as we all know it's still pretty long way to achieve core feature set -
@cheekybuddha: Failed to commit issues should get much better with the new server code. Let me know if you're still seeing it after the switch.
When it comes to data caps, the idea is to not affect anyone using the service legitimately, so you shouldn't need to worry about it unless you are deliberately trying to bring down the servers
Custom mouse gestures are not getting synced at the moment. Doing so is probably not straightforward, but we plan to try to sync as many things as possible, so it will happen eventually.
The sync implementation treats all the Vivaldi instances equally, so changes made on any instance will be reflected to all other instances. Some merging is done on the client side if incompatible changes happen simultaneously.

Hm, let's see:
We can visit web pages and read/view them. Bookmarks, notes, history and downloads work.
Seems to be a pretty complete core to me ... -
@julien_picalausa:
I forgot to say ...
you guys'n'gals are awesome!!!
Keep up the great work! -

Yes, this is what I have observed.
My issue is that when I install an new instance of V on a new machine, all its default bookmarks/start pages aresynced and I have to delete them all over again. -
@julien_picalausa: There was also frequent
SYNC_SERVER_ERROR
while syncing sessions.
I hope that update will solve itI'd be really happy if custom thumbnails could be synced too in the near future
-
@rotfl: We have some idea about how to make that happen, at least. But getting from the idea stage to a full implementation usually takes a while. But we'll get there, one step at a time
-
@cheekybuddha: Right. I see where you're coming from. I'll file a bug to keep track of this.
-
LOL xD
-
Seems ok here. I had to manually log out. After login, sync looks good, no data lost.
The issue I had before was that bookmar bar was reseting was apearing once a day. Have to wait for tomorrow if it occurs again.

Sync is crashing my Vivaldi Browser at the moment. No error message, Vivaldi simply closes himself when I enter my encryption password and press on start sync.
I'm using Linux Mint.uname -a:

Logged in again, seems to work fine.
-
@enc0re: That's a known client-side issue. There will be a fix for it in the next snapshot.
-
@gwen-dragon: Thank you. It seems to work now. I started from shell and got the following messages, but everything incl. login and sync worked fine:
nafex@asdf ~ $ vivaldi
[1:18:0307/155022.500527:ERROR:adm_helpers.cc(73)] Failed to query stereo recording.
[23590:23590:0307/155110.738262:ERROR:bookmark_model_associator.cc(1005)] Bookmarks persistence error was encountered: Native version (2) does not match sync version (1)
[23590:23590:0307/155227.569693:ERROR:media_internals.cc(106)] Cannot get RenderProcessHost
nafex@asdf ~ $After that i started via menu again and it also worked fine
-
@nafex I had the same issue on Arch Linux here. But after starting vivaldi-snapshot via shell it works now. Thanks @Gwen-Dragon
Btw, if we're talking about sync now, is there any plan to support web panels and search engines as well @julien_picalausa?
Otherwise sync worked really well over the last month for me on my devices, thanks! -
@benjo: Yes, there are plans to support that and more
-
Great work Vivaldi team!
