Use Nicknames in the Search Field

Re: Use search nicknames in Search field…
Just tried to select another search engine by nickname in the search bar and it still doesn't work in 1.14.
It does work in the address bar, but I don't want to have to use that for searching. My habit is to search in the search bar. -
I moved your thread to Feature Requests.
-
@pesala That's where I was trying to put it to start with. Do we finally have one place to put feature requests that is not limited to just the next release?

Yes. This is it.

@josephj11 This just got marked as Done which is cool, but it would be better if it worked.
I just tried it and it did in fact try to work, but there are two problems. First, it looks like the search argument was concatenated with the search engine website URL making it unusable. There needs to be a blank in between the two. Second, the search icon which indicates which search engine will be used next went blank. The whole point of using a search engine abbreviation in the search field is to make a one-time exception, not to change the default which can already be done easily. Screenshot
I looked at it again and I see it tried to put a space in there with a %20, but it got treated as a literal instead of a space.

I'm unable to reproduce that issue here. This feature has been available for a few years now, but I haven't ever observed anything like that while switching search engines by using nicknames in the search field.

I'm unable to reproduce that here either unless I use a search engine that doesn't have its favicon cached.

That's precisely how it works now.

@pafflick Not so here in the latest Snapshot.
My default search is Ecosia.
Search with nickname
New default search
It reverts to Ecosia on restarting Vivaldi. This setting is disabled:
Keep Last Selected Search Engine -
@Pesala And that is the correct behaviour. It stays for as long as the window is opened - but if you open a new window, you'll see your default search engine there. Your Search settings are not changed at any point.
-
@pafflick Then what is the purpose of the Keep Last Selected Search Engine option? Enabling this also does not change the default after a one-off search with a nickname or by selecting the engine from the dropdown.
-
@pafflick
Maybe what @josephj11 wanna say is that "After search is done, nickname doesn't go back to default".
The nickname go back only when Vivaldi is restarted, It's meaningless. -
@Pesala Here's how it works:
Keep Last Selected Search Engine- Change search engine in search box Open a new Window Previously selected search engine is used
Keep Last Selected Search Engine- Change search engine in search box Open a new Window Default search engine is used
-
@shifte I don't understand what you mean by "after search is done". After performing the search? After closing the tab with the results?
The change of the search engine follows the "Keep Last Selected Search Engine" setting, as explained above. You can change it by either using a nickname or by selecting it from the drop-down list.

After performing the search.
keep Last Selected Search Engine.
Some people hate this behavior.
One more thing, I think something is wrong. ↓

So you want the field to be automatically cleared after sending the data or is the search string supposed to be preserved and the search engine switched back to default? Either way, it's a different feature request.
-
OK. So it doesn't work the way I want it to work and it's a feature, not a bug.
Is there any evidence that people like it this way? AFAIK, the team doesn't seem to be into user surveys, etc. I have no idea how they decide what new features or modifications they will work on other than fixing bugs that break things.
IIUC, using a search nickname in the search field changes the default search engine for that window, but does not change it for any other windows. Changing it using the drop down menu on the search engine icon changes it for all windows. All assuming that keep last search engine is not enabled.
I will do a bit more testing to see if the %20 thing happens all the time or under just some conditions. I am using latest Vivaldi stable on kubuntu Linux 18.04.
BTW, if it worked the way I desire, it would reset the search engine to the default immediately after a nickname search, but it would not clear the search string in case I wanted to do the same search again using another search engine.
