Jón von Tetzchner: Ask me anything about Vivaldi
-
At the end of next week, a prominent member of our volunteer community will meet Vivaldi’s founder and have the opportunity to ask him your questions about Vivaldi. What would you like to ask? Post your questions and get a reply straight from the source.

I want to stop opening Opera 12.18 to manage my email, but I won't be able to do that unless Vivaldi M3 can import my existing emails, contacts, and accounts. I still use one POP3 email account.
Is there any hope of me getting rid of Opera 12.18 this year? The only other thing I need it for is editing the HTML source of local files and opening web pages in other browsers.

RSS reader when?
I'm still on Opera 12 because it has RSS, which I need for certain work-related issues and I'm spending 99% of my work time in a single browser window. I got Opera vetted, but not an extra RSS reader on the side. I could get Vivaldi vetted, but it needs RSS for that.
And frankly, I need RSS for personal use, it's an extremely important part of the web in general.

Here is another one still using Opera 12 because of M2 and its RSS capabilities. As soon as Vivaldi brings M3 (including RSS reader functions) I will switch completely over.
And, by the way, thanks to Jon and everyone else for bringing this great Browser! -
What's the status for the "cloud" bookmark synchronization feature for Vivaldi? I still have Opera around because all my bookmarks are synced to their servers

@pinkmeister: Since I switched from Opera 12 to Vivaldi a few months ago I use "The RSS Aggregator" addon from the Chrome store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/the-rss-aggregator/ffhafkagcdhnhamiaecajogjcfgienom?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher-info-dialog
It actually is very similar to the integrated RSS reader in Opera 12, only that it opens in a tab instead of the sidebar. -

As always : when will Vivaldi be fully Open Source ?

@henascim: You mean this?

Recalling old feats, would you try again to cross the Atlantic swimming? (or something similar)

What is the companies Business Model like? How does Vivaldi earn its share? I am having in the back of my mind the memory, that Opera was once sold to investors and then things changed, so if Vivaldi wants to remain independent in the long run i want to know how they sustain themselves. Hopefully thanks to an open answer.

Great idea, thanks for doing this! I hope we see a follow-up on Reddit, all the cool CEOs are doing it nowadays ^^

What's your favourite ice cream flavour? And how popular is ice cream in Iceland? -
Have you bought a Tesla yet?

@veraser: Regarding the chaos of the Feature Request thread, we're trying a new format starting with 1.14, so stay tuned!

to Jón:
1.) When do you intend to fully opensource the Vivaldi browser?2.) You seem to promote the privacy and security issues which more and more people seem complacent with and not really care that deeply until too late, don't you agree that trust towards the browser and the whole company is based on transparency and source code audits?
3.) Trust is a subjective matter. The privacy of normal citizen is eroding as more and more private companies with support and legislation from governments datamine details about our lives, do you think that building the Vivaldi browser on the chromium codebase is wise? Is it futureproof?
4.) Building yourself chromium from scratch pulls some binary blobs from Google. This has been verified. How can I trust the Vivaldi browser If I cannot review the code nor be sure that the browser is clearly doing something it should not?
5.) You have a chance to stand out from the browser market, Brave is also differentiating its values, Mozilla has clearly two faces and is not being honest with its users, why is opensourcing Vivaldi such a problem? Why can't Vivaldi push openly the privacy and security communities with words and facts?
6.) You can be the most trustworthy company in the world, with the nicest and kindest community but the respect you have is built on transparency and honesty to your userbase, would you agree?

@pinkmeister: Have you tried Opera Mail? I think that may allow for importation from Opera 12.
-
Vivaldi brought a lot of features other Chromium-based browsers don't have. so i wonder 2 features i most lack may come..
- will there be an extensive control for resources use implemented?(like manual hibernate tab, auto-hibernate if not used # minutes)
- visual control over tabs state with tabs and text color would be really appreciated! almost none other browser allows to see visual difference between loaded tab, unloaded/hibernated, loaded in background/net viewed yet = one can only see the current tab and all others, quite unpractical.

My question to mister von Tetzchner:
Is there a technical impediment to not implementing User CSS and Use rJs in the same way as it had been implemented in Opera? Thank you in advance. -
Jón, how do you think the needs of power users have changed (if at all) through a time? Lets talk about some particular dates: ~2000 (release of Opera 4), ~2012 (release of Opera 12), 2018, and maybe you can try to predict what such users would expect from a browser in 5 years from now.

Is there an open the web team at Vivaldi?
