Why the new Vivaldi icon? Here's why.
-
@ian-coog: That's the incognito icon, I guess it's the same from Chromium?
And BTW, the actual images in the ico format are all PNG or BMP.
-
@An_dz If I pin Mozilla Firefox to the start menu I get the large icon. How would one get the large icon for Vivaldi?
-
@An_dz I don't know, you tell me. I just reported what I saw. No idea about other browser and if it's important for the icons to be exactly sized with multiples of 2 but logically I'd guess so.
For the record: Firefox icons in firefox.exe resources are named in the same way, but they're all sized with the exact multiples of 2, none of them have odd sizes -
@Pesala This has been bugging me as well, not for Vivaldi per se, but in general. Microsoft being Microsoft, there must be some Windows 10 specific rules and specifications for apps to receive this privilege of a full-size Windows Tile. As it is very rare for applications that are not in the Windows Store to have it. Notice how it has its own background color as well, while the standard bg color depends on your windows color theme settings.
Mozilla Thunderbird has one too, with a off-white background.
It makes all the apps without a custom tile look like old Windows 95 programs ..Would be great if Vivaldi developers could do a little research on this.

@mdnjou A simple google search provides this solution:

@Pesala I'll download Firefox to test and do a little search to see if I can find any info, but maybe we need a 512x512 icon as well, or some other size like 128x128.
Edit:
No difference with Firefox, Vivaldi is using the same formats. Don't know what's the problem. -
@pesala: Can you try changing the Vivaldi icon to the one included in update_notifier.exe? Or even pin update_notifier to the taskbar. If it works I might have an idea what's the problem.
Edit:
Actually I don't think it will work, now I see you have O12 also pinned and it should also not be so small as O12 also offers hi-DPI images. -
@luetage If someone needs a software for creating custom icons look for OblyTile.
-
@An_dz Tried both. Neither makes any difference. Only 48 pixel icon is displayed.
-
@Pesala Yes, I was about to say that there was no need to test as I have identified the problem. I have already sent the information to the team on how they can fix it.

What is this google you're talking about. Some kind of magic?
Just saying it's not unusual, and that if anything - they would be among the first to actually support it. Which suggests it requires a little more effort than simply embedding a larger icon size. Sure we could go around and fix every little thing ourselves using google, but isn't it nice when developers do their own developing.

A lot of things would be nicer if developers had a surplus of time (or there were enough developers to create 'surplus' time) along with a sparse current priority list for fixing "every little thing". But given harsh reality as it stands, things like a program's icon size, shape, colors, variety, or pixel count have to stand in line with every other thing, little and not-so-little, that need doing in bringing an innovative browser up to speed from zero. Until then, for many of these "little things," there's Google and self-effort... or otherwise, patience plus bug reports or feature requests.

No kidding. I was under the impression though that in forums people join together in the effort towards progress, where discussion narrows things down. This is working out well for Vivaldi so far, and thus i say let's all keep doing what everyone does best. It's a compliment, i'm not sure why one would be offended.

I was waiting to see when my wife noticed the logo change...
So yesterday she mentioned it, and I asked which one she preferred... For some reason she was reluctant to commit - and after pressing her for a few moments she finally relented by saying "I suppose I'll get used to it". I said "what does that mean?" Her response: "well I married you didn't I?"
I'll let you draw your own conclusions...

I really fell in love with Vivaldi, but I also dislike the new icon, I dont get, why all corners of nearly any ractangle should be rounded. The original icon was much more interesting, it expressed, in my opinion, also movement. Even the tabs of Vivaldi are not rounded be default! I hope you dont plan to round them as well.
-
@burbuja Rounding and squaring are mostly under user control.
-
When do you expect the new icon to become universal?
A month has passed since this change and I still have the same menu button in the upper right corner, the website favicon is still the same, and most of the usage on the website including the old banners and badges are all still the same. Maybe a capable intern could handle this so you guys can continue to concentrate on finishing Sync and all the other stuff in the works?
-
The old one was simply more elegant. I'd like to have it back.
-
@naderi You can exchange both the application icon and the menu icon in your browser, if you don't like the new one. But chances the devs change back to the old icon are close to zero at this point.

@luetage: How does it work on Mac and Windows?
