I made a huge thumbnail pack ...

I researched about the centered issue as well. I found out that Vivaldi Speed Dial page thumbs need a resolution of 440x340 in my case, to be perfectly centered. Same for folders. After measuring them, the actual size in the SD page is 242x187
No idea what causes this but it seems I'm not the only one.
-
@NSANE That's an odd number, but in any case, if you and ebi want, you can always edit my thumbs for your SD pages to fit that if you want it that way. If the Vivaldi team ever changes the way it's rendered so that 440x360 does make it vertically centered, then my thumbs will always be here, or if there's a change needed in the sizing of it, I'll do that too.
One of the things I'm a little concerned about is when 16:9 thumbnails come out. What will I do then? Or will they take the last few pixels on each sides and stretch them out while keeping the aspect ratio of the photo? If that's the case, then that wouldn't be so bad, as long as the stock thumb's style doesn't change either with that, but whatever happens, I'll definitely try to adapt to the changes.

@ebi said in I made a huge thumbnail pack ...:
I actually came across a solution for my case. I told a friend of mine about this at Saturday; she frequently does some graphical stuff for her company and had a reeeeeealy good laugh when I told her I was doing image editing with Paint.
She offered to teach me some basics with Gimp2, so I can modify any thumbnails with "saliences".
You know, Microsoft is about to deprecate MS Paint this fall, and it has me worried. The way I make these thumbnails is with both Paint and Paint 3D. That's how I've been able to make them, and those tools are extremely simple to use. I can make a thumbnail in 2-5 minutes, and without having to go through lots of menus. It's really easy and fast.
Now I have to look at a possible alternative for the future, in case Microsoft decides to really remove MS Paint from W10. I can maybe use paint.net for the initial resizing of the picture into a 440x360 canvas, and then open it in Paint 3D to manually resize it within that canvas, as Paint 3D is the only photo editing program I've found that allows me to select the entire picture, and drag resize it. I've looked in other programs for over 10 minutes, but I haven't found any that let me select the picture, then resize it by clicking a bottom corner while holding ctrl or shift and then moving the mouse to manually resize the picture until I think it looks good. That's how I've been doing the thumbnails the whole time.
If there's something I'm missing that would allow me to do that, let me know. I'd like to use some universal solution that I don't need to fully depend on Microsoft tools to do the job. I also tried out Gimp 2.8, but it's a little complicated for something small like making quick thumbnails. Paint.net is better for replacing Paint and then finishing it off with Paint 3D.
Maybe I need to learn Gimp or Paint.net, and start reading tutorials on how to use it, but with Paint/Paint 3D I didn't need any tutorials. It's just so easy to use.
And as for the roommate: I guess I could wallpaper his room with images from a fully customized SD page. You think this might work?
Yes, I think that would do the trick. And just to emphasize his need for a new browser, you should post a Vivaldi banner with "A Browser for our Friends"on the ceiling of his bedroom, so that everytime he goes to bed, he will be reminded of what he is missing out.
But don't stop there. You must also print a SD page with custom thumbnails, and then tape it to his computer screen so he can see himself using Vivaldi with some of those amazing thumbnails(hopefully put on thumbnails for his favorite websites). Then, as he turns on his computer and opens up Firefox, the only webpage that shows up will be vivaldi.com, because you secretly put it there while he wasn't looking. He will then realize it's time to finally give in dark side, as it's the only way he can save his friends.

@D0J0P paint.net and xnview (to resize canvas when needed) should be all anyone would need. I have used a number of other image tools on my box just because I have them, but on the whole resizing or cropping (or both) the image/canvas should be all anyone needs.
In fact, now that I look at it, all you need is paint.net.
-
@Ayespy Is there a way I can drag from the corner of the image to resize photos in either of those programs like I can with Paint 3D? I just tried it with xnview, and like paint.net and everything else, I have to resize it by entering a pixel or percentage value instead of just selecting the picture and dragging it to shrink it down to a good size.
Also, when I resized pictures using paint.net, they seem to show up a little blurry compared to when resizing pictures using Paint 3D. Do you notice anything odd in the picture?
(Left: picture resized with Paint 3D | Right: picture resized with paint.net)
I'm not sure why, but the one on the right, resized with paint.net, looks a little blurry to me, especially on the bottom of the letters. Maybe I'm using the wrong setting for resizing?
-
My desktop and monitor resolution is 1080p@60Hz.
And yeah, please use paint.net or anything with layers (though Gimp is really, really bad). For resizing, you should use a software that has a lanczos filter which is better than bicubic resampling.
-
@D0J0P My display shows them exactly the opposite - the one on the left blurred, and the one on the right crisp.
-
I'm on Linux, so I don't have Paint.NET as an option (it's what I used on Windows).
For Linux, I've been trying out Krita. Looks like there is a Windows version as well: https://krita.org/en/
I found it a little difficult to use at first, probably just because I wasn't used to it. But it's been serviceable.
-
Hello again @D0J0P, I have some more requests for you if you don't mind:
Thanks in advance, happy browsing with Vivaldi!
-
@NSANE Do you know of any software that has the lanczos filter for resizing images? I haven't seen one yet as far as I know.
-
@Ayespy Really? Darn, it looks so different from mine. What's your screen resolution? Mine is 1366 x 768 on a 15-inch laptop. Kind of a strange resolution, and it's definitely not 1080p, so I'm wondering if that's why.
Would you mind doing me a small favor? I've added both sd_netflix2(the original one on the left) and "netflixtest" in my thumbnail pack. Do you think you could download the 2, put them together on your SD page and tell me the difference you see between the two? That might me a more accurate way of spotting the difference.
If it's still the same result, I should probably consider really using paint.net and trying to resize all my SD thumbnails that way. It'll be a big task, but I'll do that if it means higher quality images.

Hi, Gimp use Lanczos3 (Sinc), Kubic and linear.
Cheers, mib

Just found your thumbnails. They are awesome! Thank you!
I would be delighted if you made some for these:

@mib2berlin NSANE says Gimp is really bad for resizing, especially when it comes to layers, but I tried it out with Gimp anyway, because I can't seem to find any other software that allows me to use the lanczos filter. Though I'll try Krita as well.
Here's a pic from left to right with the main sd_netflix resized with Paint 3D, the netflixtest picture resized with bicubic filter, and the very right has netflixtest 2 resized by Gimp with the lanczos filter. Anybody know which one looks the best and most crisp?
I also have the filed in my thumbnail pack(sig below) with them. They are: sd_netflix, netflixtest and netflixtest2.
It feels like they've all got blurry spots and sharp spots in different places.
@Bedoncity and @tjukken I haven't forgotten about your requests. I will get back to you on them when I can. Sorry for the delay!
-
@saudiqbal The website is good for resizing for PNG, but it seems like I'm not able to resize both the canvas and the image. That would mean I would resize the entire image to 440 x 360, and then resize it again in a program and then resize the canvas back to 440 x 360.
-
@D0J0P Left one is the best on this display.
-
@D0J0P I can resize jpg too, it does resize the canvas too, try clicking the direct link with embedded settings.
-
@Ayespy That's what I thought too. That's too bad, as it would pretty easy to resize things by percentage instead of dragging, even if that ends up taking longer. That means I'll be sticking with Paint 3D to resize as it was the thumbnail on the left.
