Custom Speed Dial thumbnails – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.10.862.6
-
Great! I was waiting for this feature from the very beginning of the Vivaldi project. Now speed dial looks nicer and easier to use, and I am one step closer to finally migrating from Opera 12. Thanks!
-
Oh, and something else! ALL categories of search results in the Address Bar dropdown list shoul be optional, not just turning off bookmarks and typed history. The user should be able to choose what he/she wants to see in the search results list - history, bookmarks, open pages, web search results, etc. I myself usually need local search results (history and bookmarks), but not web search items. Everyone is different and that's the concept Vivaldi is based on.

@treego: It is working now ... the" Help/Check for Update" now works. The install file now is over 41 MB; something changed (before it was a bit over 7 MB only). Thank you Vivaldi for correcting this. Thank you Vivaldi for a nifty browser!
-
@pesala: 32 bit downloading fine now, speedier than 64 bit, did you get the full download today?
-
If you drag and drop thumbs in speed dial, the animation behaves strange and gaps open on different places (random?) from where you try to drop the thumb.

@andyraisbeck: There's no delta update, only full installer this time. The SysAdmin has already worked on the CDN to fix the issue with the download failing after some MB, so it should be good now.
-
@helsten2 Yes. It's a skill that requires a bit of practice to learn how to move them to the desired slot. There is definitely room for improvement. I presume that someone has already filed a Bug Report
-
@duarte-framos: Actually, as the UI is a webpage, you probably could add any format, even a video. But then don't come complaining about performance.
-
@duarte.framos Why only animated GIF?
-
@treego: It was a problem with the CDN, the SysAdmin has worked with one of the Sopranos that had this error as well and he somehow fixed it.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Yes. Perhaps an under the hood improvement to Chrome? I have not seen it announced in the Changelogs. My post could be moved to the implemented Feature Requests forum.

Support Animated PNG Images
At least 49 users will be happy.

@Pesala This is something that the Chrom{e,ium} folks have recently gotten around to completing...
https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=437662
...and they're still fixing glitches here and there like this:

Most of the speed dials on my Vivaldi have never fully loaded the thumbnail. Maybe you can add a "Refresh All Thumbnails" right-click option to the Speed Dial Page or have a "Refresh All Thumbnails Every X Days" option somewhere in the settings?
-
@Orthodox This is a great idea and should be easily doable.
-
@milkb0at The feature is new and immature. They're working on this. Sync (which I am testing backstage) also deletes speed dial images. It's a work in progress.
-
@milkb0at Yeah, that's exactly why I gave up on custom thumbnails initially -- it's in fact possible to accomplish this with a custom modification for the longest time, but it was just too painful losing them all.
-
@milkb0at There needs to be a lock. As soon as I discover F5 wipes them out I gave up till that isn't possible.

Hallelujah, this is great news! There was this old addon around the store for that. Now it will no londer be needed

Fifty, fifty users will be happy. Count me in
-
@duarte.framos Well, I was never interested in custom speed dial images, 'cuz I could always tell what the page was from the thumbnail. Now I created a mess of my own optimized logos, and I like them. My county elections department thumb is an animated waving flag, and my weather page thumb is falling snow. I'm starting to like this, tho it was not important to me until I started playing with it.

@Ayespy I understand it is not an essential feature at all, although I do love it and intend to make heavy use of it in the future I can feel it is totally a gimmick.
Nevertheless as stated elsewhere I just find one descriptive easy to read icon faster to interpret at first glance then a miniaturized screenshot of the website. Especially since some websites have an ever-changing face full of banners and ephemeral images, one can't even use muscle memory to find them easily.
There is also the aesthetic appeal of customizing it, using a personal style and of course pretty icons or animated gifs. Oh boy animated thumbs!!
