Details matter. Vivaldi 1.6 is ready
-
It's a rebuild (.34) from the snapshot (.32) with few if any changes.

Hi everyone.
Congrats for the release of Vivaldi 1.6! What a "first" year for this new browser, with seven nice major releases
Like other people before me, I got a few requests/ideas/suggestions for the Vivalteam:
1.More privacy features: As a browser for your friends, you probably know already that online privacy matters very much to many connected people. As such, Vivaldi should be among the best browsers, by providing more options and flexibility over privacy. A few examples of desired improvements: Proper private window managament (with addons correctly handled, aka VB-23093), private tab in a normal window, optional "Clean data when exiting Vivaldi" like a Firefox-based browser would provide, an improved Clear private data dialog (with selected items remembered, aka VB-23034), and more.
2. More performance improvements: Though some progress have been made on this matter with theming, startup is still slow (yet my laptop has decent specs) for instance, whatever it's a brand new profile or a frequently used one. Vivaldi could use some performance and responsiveness boost. For instance, if I'm running a game while using Energy efficient mode at the OS level, it'll take a long time (about one minute or more) before being able to use it, while browsers like Edge or Opera can be opened rather quickly.
I think the things I mentioned above should be more worked on before thinking about working on big features like sync, mobile browser or email client.
But like I said, you've made a nice work this year already, and I hope you'll keep bringing exciting new stuff for a browser I expect to be fast, feature-rich and elegant. You already have the last two, so why not the first?Regards.
P.S: If I recall some other requests/ideas/suggestions, I'll let you know of course, since you value our feedback that much
P.S 2: I remember something rather important, somehow related to the 1. section above:
Make access to Chrome interface pointless: Due to the new Clear private data dialog not working as I expect it to be, I'm using the native Chromium dialog as a Panel to clear data. Besides, at my first run on Vivaldi, I'm typing "chrome://settings/search#a" in my address bar to make sure some privacy-related settings are unticked, especially those unreachable through Vivaldi's settings interface (like prediction services and online spell checking).

How to install both stable and snapshot on Windows?
-
2. was happening to me only on Chrome and got fixed in version 0.55 - how does it work for you now?
My Vivaldi startup is quite fast, but I honestly can't believe that Chrome is way faster now, it was the worse (about 10-15 seconds to start).
-
Super sad that Q4 is ending and still no mail feature.
Regardless, congrats for a great release and an amazing year overall.
-
Not sure what you meant exactly by "got fixed in version 0.55", but my Vivaldi is still up-to-date (stable branch), I even made a fresh user profile to determine how much the "Improved startup mecanism" would be efficient, it turns out to make a very low to no difference unfortunately
I don't really know about Chrome, but I know for sure that Chromium stable builds by Nik for Windows are very fast at startup compared to Vivaldi.
-
Install one of them standalone. Use the "advanced" button in the installer.
-
Mail/sync has been delayed since a while ago, so it's been known it won't come out this year. I'm hoping that Q1 of next year would be the release, but that's my guess.
-
There's at least one thread about this in the forums. That would be a better place to discuss the topic.
-
To be clear, nothing has been delayed. Work is ongoing on mail and sync and progress is being made. They are simply big jobs.
-
3 versions later, I'm still seeing the problem where links I open from Gmail result in blank pages. I first noticed it in the snapshot builds after the 1.3 release and it only happens on my laptop, so for now, I have to stick to Vivaldi 1.3 there. Wish I knew what was wrong and if there's a workaround though.
-
I meant 2014, of course.
-
I think I meant that it was expected around last year or very early 2016 that it was going to come in Q4 2016, but that there was a lot more work than expected.
How's sync/mail looking right now? What's your best guess as to the release in a snapshot?
-
I decline to guess, except that it's my impression we will probably see mail before sync.
-
Okay no I'm sure, definitely I don't recommend Vivaldi around meβ¦
the stupid update block my ALL Vivaldi Browser...
It's a final update ! not Snapshot ! and If you post quickly the update WITHOUT test I'm sure is just horrible...
And I have proof, your DON'T test because If you try "vivaldi://mail"
You find a strange part of Mail program... thank you Vivaldi... thank you...
You create quickly RC update just for fun or what ?
Now I'm back to Opera 12.16... I quit Vivaldi until you are sure the browser is "entirely" functional... not before...
Good bye -
I'm looking more forward to sync than mail, but I'm guessing we'll see either one or both on 2.0.
-
Some support pre-exists at webmail.vivaldi.net however as of now I would REALLY love to see this built-in as a web panelβ¦

I figured something out⦠If you move the cursor next the tiny crack in between the url and search. You can resize them giving you more room. This is a complete work around but it is what it is.
-
Startup times see somewhat on par with chrome⦠However I see what you mean if you have vivaldi not run during background it takes 30-40 seconds for me..
Ubuntu 16.04
Intel i5.If there is any difference on Windows I will update this post later. If I don't forget I will try later

Not as easy to implement as you might imagine. And with some rather large and much higher priority projects in front of them, since private window exists, private tabs are unlikely to be high priority soon.
