FR: Email: Allow loading external content by default.
-
Hello! First post here. Having familiarized myself with the browser, I come to the point where there's an inconvenience that hasn't been accounted for.
I would like that the email client have an option to always load external content by default. It's rather awkward to have to allow every newsletter I receive to see anything but blank text, and it hinders onboarding. While this technically has negative privacy implications, I would rather have the Gmail experience (only preventing sketchier content from loading external content) than to repetitively allow-list everything (which also bloats the contacts list with a lot of not-contacts).
Again, I appreciate the effort that goes into this remarkably feature-rich browser. But perfection is impossible, right?
(P.S. No tag for the email client?)

@Tyroid Welcome to Vivaldi.
There are valid reasons for not enabling external content by default and you stated one above: negative privacy implications.
Images can and do have unique identifiers that will identify the e-mail address that received the images when loaded/displayed and regarding spam, it also tells the spammers that the e-mail address is valid.
The Vivaldi Mail client has an option to always load external content from individual senders, if the user so chooses.
Privacy by design. I do not see Vivaldi offering such an option.

Since I have GMail, I'm not worried about clicking on spam. I know I trust what I get, and the exceptions I don't have to click.
My problem is exactly the "load external content from individual senders" matter.
- You have to do it for every single sender.
- It will bloat your contacts list. (I'm not using it... but are 100 noreplys really deserving of contacts list entries?)
I'm not saying loading external content is a good default.
Privacy in Vivaldi is an option - and convenience is a valid choice. I'm not worried if a substack email knows who I am.

Jumping in here to agree this would be a valuable feature, even if not enabled by default. Just as the user can choose to load from individuals, they could choose to load from all. There are plenty of other settings the user can enable and/or disable to adjust the levels of privacy in Vivaldi. Privacy by design, but also "the most flexible browser", right?

Just started using Vivaldi (again) and this has been driving me insane. An "Always allow" option (off by default) would be awesome.
I know that it's not a good privacy practice, but I would love for this to be an option like pretty much anything else privacy related. I trust the senders that are in my regular inbox and don't want to add every single one individually. Vivaldi is known for it's customizability, so why should this be something the user can't customize? Very strange reasoning.

Here's a little story to get you thinking:
A few years ago, I had nothing better to do on New Year's Eve than completely declutter and update my PC. I invested 18 hours in it.
Then I received a postcard as a New Year's greeting - by email. When I downloaded it, I realized that it was already several megabits and the download was still not finished. I had caught a virus. The image file was *.jpg and had - invisible to me - another extension. 18 hours of work were for nothing. I had to use an earlier system restore point and start from scratch.Today I work with Linux. It's more secure. But especially in mail traffic, I could inadvertently forward an infected mail. The damage is then done to the next person...

I have something to say about this annoying omission here, but it sees it as spam. You understand what I mean.

My main purpose in installing this browser is more freedom, more customizability. Why can't we activate this option only in Vivaldi mail while we can activate it in other email clients? This is really thought provoking. And also very annoying. It seems extremely absurd to me that if the user has created his own security measures, not adding this simple feature under the name of additional security option is associated with privacy and security. I will continue to use it for a while. However, if this feature does not come after a few updates, I will go back to Opera Chrome and Outlook Mail.
