Vivaldi 6.8 on Android – New ways to make the browser match you and updated Ad Blocker
-
I have seen some posts about people seeing reddit promoted ads. However I have yet to see any promoted ads on android or ios. I run the built in adblocker on android with only the default filterlists + NextDNS.

Small suggestion - can we have an option to set different Speed Dial Groups for different Vivaldi instances? For example, my desktop browser has a set of websites I regularly use from that SD Group, while my Android phone regularly uses a different SP Group.
Only a minor irritation, otherwise still a devoted Vivaldi man. -
After this update, it seems you now always open the start page to your first speed dial group? I've been using different speed dial groups for years for different devices, and it would always reopen to the previous group I used. This "feature" is adding an extra click every time I want to use my speed dial on phone, and I really don't want to have to remove my pc speed dial to fix it
-
The problem still persists with the new version, when changing the background image vivaldi crashes.
-
I get the impression that this release introduces a new styling for the bookmarks lists where the items are displayed at a very large lineheight or inter line padding.
(It actually got me looking for a "compact bookmarks" display mode) -
@termel: +1 This. Move it back to where it used to be, indeed.

@ymstnt0 said in Vivaldi 6.8 on Android – New ways to make the browser match you and updated Ad Blocker:
Why was the option to toggle Dark Mode for individual sites removed? Because this feature breaks many sites, I found that toggle to be great. Now this feature is basically useless without it...
+1

I think without extensions, vivaldi on android is as good as any other unusable mobile browser because who would use a browser without ublock origin when there are goodies like Firefox Nightly. Since a phone restricts access to its filesystem (meaning no custom.css/js), extensions would be the one thing to have vivaldi taken miles forward other mobile browsers. Plus it would be good to enjoy moooore of the desktop goodies you guys gave us like profiles, workspaces, sessions etc. Vivaldi For The Win

@Kjala I would use a mobile browser without uBlock Origin. In fact, I don't use a browser of any kind with it. I suspect, somehow, that I am in the company of millions of users (none of us as smart and sophisticated as you, of course) who also don't use uBlock Origin anywhere, on anything.

@Ayespy
Calm down. It's just when my phone wakes up from a coma and i want to use the browser, i'm just met with a browser that looks like a desktop browser but lacks extensions. You know, you find something like an apple, you buy somthing that looks like an apple. But you come to realise it's not an apple but, respectfully, a decoration. I use pc more than mobile so my habits lean me to use a browser like a pc one. -
@Kjala I'm calm. Factually, I can barely stand to use a phone browser. It's too small and finicky no matter what browser it is. If I HAVE to use one, I prefer Vivaldi, but given my choice I would only use desktop all day every day. And if all desktop options were available on phone, I'm afraid it would not improve my experience. It would still be to small and too finicky, just with more features. The ideal mobile browser would be bigger than your phone - but that's impossible, so we live with what we have to.
I can tolerate a tablet browser better, especially if I'm using my tablet with the keyboard and mouse connected - but it's still too small - just not too, too, too small. And then of course it doesn't work like a phone browser or a desktop browser, so I'm always having to remember how to make everything work. If, like some, I used ONLY phone or tablet, I'd get used to it - but then I would not be able to run my business, so...
-
@ymstnt0 +1 I don't understand why Vivaldi is worsening the user experience for no reason.
-
The latest update has made the browser unstable. Every time I open the browser, it crashes and sends me back to my phone's app screen
I have an attached a video of what happens when I try to open the app -
I would like them to upload the application in the samsung store.

@Veddu
Glad you don't see ads, but I see them, and I'm quite annoyed by the vivaldi subpar adblocker.I have sent a bug report, VAB-9600... hope to see some progress soon.
In addition to reddit promoted ads I often see an extremely annoying popup, which wants me to switch to reddit app (will never happen!).
Examples of reddit ads I'm seeing every day:
currently I must use firefox + ublock to avoid these annoyances.
EDIT: I have also tested brave browser, and it's adblocker is able to block these ads, so this is definitely an issue with vivaldi, and should be fixed.
-
@lazymonkey2 I don't use Reddit often, but I agree that popup is very annoying when asking for if I want to use the Reddit app or stay in my browser.
I know Reddit used to have a way of disabling that, but I think they removed that setting, so it would be nice if Vivaldi allowed blocking of that kind of popup.

May I Ask what filterlists you use? I agree on the dialog thing though. I have tried the filterlist that brave uses “fanboy mobile notifications” but it breaks Reddit and the ability to scroll.
Edit: It could be a regional thing too. By the image I would guess it is Italian ad. Have you tried adding this filter list, the easy list Italy?
-
@Veddu
I have added all of the generic lists, ie the not regional lists. I added easylist italy too, but doesn't work.I also tried creating a custom list, and adding some custom filters, like hiding elements with .promoted class, but it doesn't work either.
about ability to scroll, maybe this rule could help (I think it worked in brave and firefox+ublock, but I don't know if it will work in vivaldi).
-
It didn't work. However I still find it akward that you still see promoted ads on reddit and I don't on android nor on iOS...
Could it be that you are signed in and using an account? Maybe try clearing the cache on reddit?
For me, I have the following adblocker lists enabled in Android:
ABP- anticircumvention list
Adblock warning removal list
Easylist
Fanboy Annoyances list
Regional filter list (Dandelion sprout Nordic filterlist)
Brave Unbreak filterlist
Brave Android Specific
Brave first partyAnd then I have a nextDNS profile for blocking ads on DNS level with Hagezi Multi pro filterlist.
And I have not seen any promoted ads on reddit yet.
-
@Veddu
yes I'm logged in, but I see ads even after logging out.
I have also tried deleting cache, still the sameEDIT: tried your two brave lists, but nothing changed.
