Click-and-drag tab unstacking
-
Thanks @mib2berlin and @Pesala for trying to help.
I believe in that last clip I'm dropping on the tab bar as you said, but please let me know it I'm doing something wrong.
I would also argue, from a UI perspective, that if the dotted rectangle is showing, it should dock onto the current window, even if I'm not dropping it on the tab bar.
If it is going to dock onto a new window it should not be showing me a placeholder in the current window in my opinion.I need to go for a bit, I'll check in later. Tonight I'll probably install Vivaldi on my MacBook and see how it behaves there.
Thanks again for taking the time to help out.
Best regards

Hello @greywidget !
Are still on this forum?I believe that the behavior you describe is a bug, as I reproduce it very frequently too, but I don't know why other people don't see it.
I use a lot of the tab stacking feature, and most of the time, dragging a tab out of a stack creates a new window for me, even though I clearly see the dotted lines on the tab bar showing that it should be dropped here in the same window. This is driving me nuts
I use the 2 level tab bar, and the automatic stacking of new tabs, if this can have any effect.
I have reported it as VB-105870, but I got a mail saying that the devs can't reproduce it, so it may not be solved... It's a shame when I see how easy it is to reproduce on my side!
Anybody else here has any tips to try to find what triggers the issue? -
@Guilimote
Hi, Vivaldi show where you have to drop the tab if you want it in the same window.
All other places on the page open a new window.If I drop it in the dotted lines it stay, if I drop it elsewhere it open a new window.
You can drop it also anywhere in the tab bar.Cheers, mib

@Guilimote
Hi, I'd almost forgotten about this.I changed my tabs to appear over on the right rather that at the top of the UI and so I have gotten out of the habit of stacking.
But I just tried again (with the tabs docked on the right) and the same issue still happens for me. I hover over a stack and the individual tabs appear to the left. I click and hold one and drag over to the right beneath my existing tabs and a dotted rectangle appears as if it is going to correctly dock beneath the others, but when I let go - it actually opens in a whole new window.
It is very annoying and I don't particularly like the tabs taking up space to the right of the UI but it seems the lesser of two evils. I definitely think it's a bug and a problem (not user error) but it seems like not everyone experiences it. I'm happy to help try to troubleshoot this if necessary - I'd love the unstacking to work as it should...

@greywidget @Guilimote
Hi, I checked the video in the bug report and I cant reproduce it either but on Linux.
Are you both on MacOS?
Then I can add a tag for it and mac developer can check this. -
@mib2berlin I don't know for @greywidget , but on my side yes, I have seen this issue on MacOS!

@mib2berlin
Hi, and thanks for your quick response.As I mentioned above, I now have my tabs on the right of the UI but I've just repeated and the issue is constantly there.
For me it is happening on Windows 10 and also on an M2 Mac running Ventura 13.6.6
I've just repeated the process 3 times on each machine and every time, despite waiting for the dotted rectangle and dropping the tab (to be ungrouped) on top of the dotted rectangle - it always opens in a new window

@greywidget
OK, I can test it on Windows 11 but the tester reply to your report is also on Win 11, lets see. -
More exactly:
Vivaldi 6.7.3329.39 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 7c9e8453c3bda0c609414dae4ca10a7f485af8d7
OS Windows 10 Version 22H2 (Build 19045.4412)and
Vivaldi 6.7.3329.39 (Stable channel) (arm64)
Revision 7c9e8453c3bda0c609414dae4ca10a7f485af8d7
OS macOS Version 13.6.6 (Build 22G630) -
@greywidget
I cant find the "automatic stagging" setting, what is the exact name? -
@mib2berlin
Hi, I don't have that set - I think it was @Guilimote who mentioned auto-stacking -
@greywidget @Guilimote @mib2berlin
Auto-stacking setting is here:
-
@barbudo2005
Hi, you meant this? -
Yes, by relation "Parent-Child" and with the Mod by domain.
In Vivaldi Mods are part of the settings.
-
OK, doesn't make any difference.
I cant reproduce this with tabs right or top, if I leave the tab anywhere in the tab bar it stay in the window.
One mentioned a clean profile, does this meant all default, no extensions?Vivaldi 6.7.3329.39, Windows 11 Pro 24H2 insider build 26200.5001.
Cheers, mib

@greywidget @Guilimote
Hi, the bug report VB-105870 was confirmed by a developer.
You can ask in the status thread about the report.https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/27450/what-is-the-status-of-vb-already-reported-bug-issue/
Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin Nice one, thankyou
-
@mib2berlin Oh good news! Thanks a lot!

Just wanted to add my own voice to this discussion with the different inconsistencies/quirks of behavior with Vivaldi Tabs;
- Occasionally the outline for dragging a new tab to a group or the tab bar not showing up.
- Sometimes not being able to drag out a tab into a new window (This one is super inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it seems to care where or when you release the mouse button as if there is a delay for it to function.).
- Completely unable to drag out a tab to create a New Window from a Private Window.
- Unable to drag tabs between Private Windows entirely.
