Catch up to the latest fixes – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3222.3

- Will installing .deb packages overwrite currently installed version?
1.1. Or can the package be installed and removed without affecting the current install, even indirectly? (the only possible thing is something with dependencies, I imagine).
1.2. If it will not overwrite anything, due being in a different folder or the executable having a different name (or anything else), will it be added to system's program menu, anyway?
1.3. If a main menu item is not added, it is good to have a separated user settings folders for it, right? Then I need to call it from the command line (no need to explain the user settings argument, for me).
- Is installing in Debian using the script something safe?
2.1. Is it easy to do and to undo? (I just discovered the existence of this install script, so I am possibly asking and commenting basic things; an article exists about the W!n standalone version, why something similar to linux Vivaldi does not exist? Installing it inside an user folder, without any root access, is much desired, and today there are many linux users that are absurdly less familiar with medium and advanced topics, as I am usually; not too common dependencies being able to live in this user folder is as important.)
All the best.

@avica Which version do you have installed? A Vivaldi 6.5 Stable?
Stable ans Snapshot are different channels and do not break each other's profiles. -
@avica
Hi, I am not on a Debian based distribution but Vivaldi stable and snapshot are independent on Linux.
You get two different folders in /opt and two in /home/user/.config.
It is possible to extract the .deb file where you want but I am not very familiar with the .deb system.
We have many Debian user here in the forum, I bet you will more detailed information for your questions.Cheers, mib

@avica See

- https://vivaldi.com/blog/desktop/desktop-snapshots/linux-snapshot-alt-install-script/
With the vivaldi-installer.sh you can extract and install many Vivaldi versions separately in your home folder..

@DoctorG , I do not have the current version installed, but it is one of the stable releases. I installed it downloading its release .deb package from Vivaldi website.
So, anyway, all the snapshots will be installed in different folders?
And about breaking their profiles, will not I need calling the snapshot installed executable with the command line argument --user-data-dir, to run it separately from the current version, to avoid changes or issues with my settings in use? Will its default user settings folder be isolated from the other?

@avica said in Catch up to the latest fixes – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3222.3:

All Snapshots installed by deb package manager in the same folder /opt/vivaldi-snapshot/
If you want to test more than the one Snapshot, you need vivaldi-installer shell script to install in user-defined separate folders.

@DoctorG , thank you very much for your link.
And all other people who made comments for me, and mainly for other page addresses given, they will be very useful. Thank you all too.
My doubts are cleared. I will just use all the new information, now. Any problem with them may be better in a new thread, probably.

Is JMAP protocol support planned, for Vivaldi.NET emails?
-
@newscpq Feature planned since 3 years, no progress.

On Linux (fedora 39) the color scheme is messed after this update. See screenshot below. Icons missing and checkboxes are barely visible in the settings dialog.
Also see screenshot below. Website loaded initially with messed up colors. Then after going to a different tab and coming back, the site is gone. I clicked on one of the extension icons (Dark Reader) and top half of the extension overlap is not visible.

@ripuhan
Hi, you are the first user report this in the forum, does the settings window looks the same in a private window?
If no one of your extensions cause this.
If yes you can try to disable hardware acceleration in Settings > Webpages, restart Vivaldi.
Issues with Vivaldi/GPU/driver are reported often, it was mostly an update of the Linux distribution cause this and/or the Vivaldi update.Cheers, mib
-
- Same behavior in private window.
- Disabling hardware acceleration and restarting Vivaldi did not help.
-
@ripuhan Share theme settings, please.

Switching over to stable channel, thanks for the wild ride!
-
@DoctorG , @mib2berlin : I removed and reinstalled the latest snapshot. That resolved the issue.
-
@Ruarí Could you please repeat for me what is implied in your statement "fixed for a majority" as I every morning see this (picture) and would like to have have full-good thumbnails every morning
PS. This is not directly related to Snapshot (see my Sign. for ver.)
-
@Totto I concur - I have six links in my main speed-dial, and every day one or two of them are borked on whichever machine I look at!
I'm assuming this is a result of the sync problem which had to be corrected in that one snapshot a few weeks ago - I'm guessing my synced thumbnail data is now corrupt everywhere even though most of my devices use stable.
If it doesn't clear up I'll probably delete & refresh the sync data on the server some time.
-
@Totto Yes, Sync craps some thumbnails, i stopped using sync for bookmarks until this will be fixed.

I need/wish there was a place where I could read about which folders to keep, which that work in tandem a.s.o., and which NOT to mess with. It's evident to me that it's just not as easy as "to copy a backup of the 'Default-'folder back into App-folder (well, maybe first and second time - but I believe this creates rot (like in : Putrid, foul, sour..) in the "system (major version upg.)"
A Lexicon Of Folders? A nice guide somewhere?

To all that have thumbnail issues of all kinds: I've just spent 10 hrs porting all my "non-transportable" setting into a new, clean install. Can confirm it does the trick
