Unsolved Speed-Dial - blank thumbnails and not working bookmarks and folders
-
Mods, would it be possible to insert a post at the top of this thread which offers the known workarounds so that latecomers to the party do not have to scroll through this increasingly lengthy thread to find short term help.
Workarounds:
-
If there are only a few tiles in a non-functional Speed Dial folder, left click on a tile, drag it over an adjacent tile, drag it back, and release the mouse button. The two tiles should become functional. Repeat as needed.
-
If there are a lot of tiles in a non-functional Speed Dial folder, leave the affected folder tab open, open an entirely new tab, and then go back to the tab for the affected folder. All tiles should now be functional.
-
The non-sexy option ... Use the bookmarks section in the old school conventional menu system.
Any I have missed?
-
-
The problem persists (actualized Ubuntu 22.04, on AMD platform). The second workaround works, but it can't be a solution forever. A definitive solution must be found!

@ilprof I had the same thing occur after the last Vivaldi update. The links I've saved in Speed Dial ,without folders, are working fine. The ones where I have multiple folders in another folder are visible until I click on the folder, then all turn blank, but are still in bookmarks.
KDE
Ubuntu Lite 6.6
vivaldi-stable_6.2.3105.47-1_amd 64, except it automatically updated the other night and I can't find out what version it installed.
Chevron Theme, Violet -- not sure what that matters.Everything was fine until the last Vivaldi update the other night.
Yes, I use sync but it's not doing anything. -
Still confirmed in VoidLinux.
I used Vivaldi 6.4.3160.34, then upgrade to 6.4.3160.41. This problem persist.
This is my inxi:
CPU: dual core Intel Core i3-3110M (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 1199/1200/2400 MHz Kernel: 6.5.9_1 x86_64 Up: 1h 15m
Anyway, I got this problem in my Windows 10 (intel i7 with AMD RX570). But not that often.

@DoctorG I don't think the video driver is involved here.
The first issue with bookmark system I know was reported in february 2023. Since then I found errors when I reordered speed dial icons/folders (sometimes with folders moved from speed dial to anothes location in bookmarks) and, sometimes, bookmarks saved in other location instead of the choosen one.
I think the speed dial is just the place where a bookmarks issue is most visible. -
I've this issue too, normally just switching to another tab and going back temporary solves it, not a big deal, but i'll post in case the extra info helps, let me know if there's more info needed.
Macmini8,1
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8500B (6) @ 4,10 GHz
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 630
OS: Arch
Kernel: 6.5.9-arch1-Ototsuku-T2-1-t2
DE: KDE Plasma 5.27.9
WM: KWin (X11)PS.
gonna reboot on macOS Sonoma and check if it happens, I'll update the post in a fewEdit: I tested, same hardware, but on macOS sonoma 14.1 (latest version) and the problem is also present.

Reordering is buggy as i saw the last 6.4 and 6.5 versions. But these issues on my PC are cosmetic for me.

Hi, I tested this on my Linux system with the issue on Windows 11, Vivaldi 6.4.3160.41 and can reproduce it.
It use a UHD 620 Intel iGPU.
Move a speed dial over another to create a new folder, open the folder.
I will update the bug report.Cheers, mib

How can I move a speed dial over to another to create a new folder? As soon as I open a folder to move a speed dial, all contents go blank.

I don't really understand your question and what you are trying to do. Sorry.
If you are trying to get the tiles/icons in a Speed Dial folder working, open the folder and all the tiles go blank.
Then go to the top of the browser window and click on the plus + sign to open a new tab.
The new tab will open.
Now click on the tab you left open for the Speed Dial folder. The tiles in the folder should all be functional now. This works for most people.

@d_canard
Hi, I guess @veritylove try to reproduce it.
This is the steps mentioned in the bug tracker:Reproduce
- Open startpage
- Drag one speed dial over another to create a folder
- (e.g. yelp over mastodon)
Click on the resulting folder.
I update the report for Linux, Windows, latest stable. -
@d_canard I don't know how to make it any clearer. Opening a new tab will not work because anything I put in a new tab or the correct wording is "folder", it blanks upon opening after I save a URL.

I second this!

And for the record I also think it's a browser issue, not a driver issue. I mean.. I started experiencing this after the last major update and by the looks of it most people did as well.
-
@mib3berlin Although I've said again that I don't believe this issue is unknown to them, as they are doing "Bookmarks work" lately (reducing the file size and moving thumbnails to other folders), if that's just the report, you 'd better add the link to this thread and attaching all of the screenshots showing blank thumbnails so far to have some rings bell, because I'd hate to read that the status of the bug has changed to "unconfirmed" in the 0.1% probability that this issue isn't known and couldn't be reproduced by that (essentially the same thing I wrote about 1+ month ago)
. I mean I am on my customized Firefox (to work like Vivaldi) for almost 3 weeks now, a little more and... who knows.... I mean it's a browser that does not crash when you try to do a paypal transcation right? And one does not need to wait 2 weeks for the next build to complete that transaction...
It's sad to say that as a long-time V. fan but 6.4 was a disastrous release (as one can see/read in the various sub-forums). And we all know that it doesn't need much (of a not unjustified) talk for a browser to be considered extremely buggy and to be dismissed.
-
@npro
The thread is linked already.
I used Paypal last week without any problem, and the speed dial issue hits me once a day or something.
No idea how many user have now, maybe 2-3 millions.
If 10% had these problems, then the Vivaldi team have a problem but I guess it is not even 1%.
Anyway, if a tool does not what I need I use another.
If I cant use Vivaldi and Paypal I use Edge or one of my 6 other installed browser.
Then back to Vivaldi, this don't bother me at all.Cheers, mib

Then back to Vivaldi, this don't bother me at all. This makes the browser a "hobby browser" though, not serious enough as a competitor (that tries to sell itself as an "office"-browser, with Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, "professional tab manipulation" etc.)

@npro
Has anyone tried inspecting the SD code when it happens? A thumb should show up as:<img width="100%" height="auto" src="/resources/sd_thumbnails/sd_vivaldi_social.png">
If something is wrong with the image source it should show up in the source. Although I would expect a "broken link" image and not just a blank image.
If it's a GPU/driver issue, the image will be valid but just won't show. But then if it's GPU-related disabling HW acceleration would "fix" it.

I haven't tried inspecting it as by a simple move-around of the tile the thumbnails are being "shown", but someone could do it I guess.
As for disabling GPU related stuff, while trying to reproduce it and trying to find workarounds I tested almost all GPU related flags Chromium has to offer, none has helped and the issue would always appear no matter what.

@npro You're right. I've been using Vivaldi for a long time, but I always end up encountering a serious problem. I like this browser..., but it's not yet mature enough, perhaps. It is true that you can change browsers (I have others installed), but a browser is a somewhat special application: you tend to tame it particularly well and, changing browsers, ends up being as complex as moving house.
