Unsolved Speed-Dial - blank thumbnails and not working bookmarks and folders
-
@Pathduck Disabling animations mitigates it from my experience (so it takes usually more tries) and yes, Linux is unforgivable, kinda like the original Windows NT that was the only one capable of reporting faulty memory sticks
-
@Pathduck
For me the fastest way to reproduce is using normal folders not on the bar like on @npro gif but the normal folders and go into and out of theme letting the animation to fully finish before trying again as the issue seems to happen on the moment the animation ends, yet not reproducible 100% of the time.As @d_canard has said it's not really a big issue, i'm just posting in hopes if helps reduce the testing times for the team.
I'm a little more concerned about the behavior change on the tabs order after closing I posted here, yet i'm not even sure if it's a bug, it's intended or it's something on my settings that had gone high wire, so i'd appreciate if someone can confirm if there's indeed a change in the tab closing behavior so i can fill a ticket in that case.

@npro It wasn't too difficult to trigger it on macOS either, yet macOS sonoma has been an awful experience for me... tbh macOS in general is worse than i expected, the best thing i did in the mac mini was installing arch on it xD
-
@Sdar Of course, there's nothing better and faster than GNU/Linux, didn't you know that?
/edit: oh you installed Arch on it, brilliant

@Pathduck
Hi, there is a good way to reproduce in VB-100767, I add a comment to VB-100225 as well.
I don't get any mails from Jira at moment, by the way.Cheers, mib

@mib3berlin Yes, seems creating subfolders is the quickest way to reproduce. Still needs some times going back and forth.
Interestingly, it seems that when it happens, it's the parent folder that shows up. I.e. if creating a subfolder with two dials, when they get blank, the view reverts to the parent. Also can be confirmed with inspecting the code - the hidden images are from the parent.
Which would lead to me think something crashes or some kind of race condition in the code that breaks the tab until refreshed.
Oh and @npro - I'm trying to help here, really don't need any snark about what OS I choose to use thanka you very mucha (I know you mean well, but zealots of any kind get on my nerves ya know...)
-
@Pathduck It's OK, I'm glad you are here, you are helping already -someone who knows a thing or two more and can ping a dev is always more welcome-
. (keep in mind that there were NO reports from Windows users for more than a month since I reported it and no interest from
anybody
, so it may be true that it isn't easily reproducible on Windows, until some users here and you tried hard to)But give Ventoy a try nevertheless, I wrote it with good intentions only (because you would be running it bare-metal and since you are techy and running
cygwin
already) -
I managed to bork it even more
While testing, somehow it got into a state of showing both Speed Dials at the same time. And I could navigate up to the root folder (which should not be possible)...Yeah, at this point I'm just glad I've only ever bothered with a single level of 15 bookmarks on my SD

@npro Yeah I've gotten into iOS/macOS development too, and they force you to have a mac with the latest version of xCode to publish.
Is not that bad but I've had more problems in macOS than in arch+kde, also it's amazing how many basic stuff you can't do on macOS or need a more time consuming workflow to achieve, and there's not a single day i don't need to restart xCode several times to make errors magically disappear.
So I ended getting the latest intel based mac there was cause, at the time, Asahi linux was too green for the m2 macs and i didn't want to buy a pc that will serve only as a paperweight when i was not using xCode, so far arch is working quite well on it and the only real tweak needed was installing a t2 kernel.Btw if someone trying to reproduce the error uses an intel that includes an integrated gpu maybe try running vivaldi on it instead of the discrete card, at least the UHD630 seems prone to trigger the tile error.

@Pathduck good work

I updated to 6.4.3160.41 (Stable channel) stable (64-bit) this morning and it still happens.
Debian 12 and Void-Linux. Both with 6.1 LTS kernels. -

Well you forgot to also mention "M$ Windows Millenium Edition" and "M$ Windows 8", right? Those were also immense disasters.
My list contains Win10 too.

@d_canard What? What do you mean by blank tile Start Page? You mean to say that your Speed Dials were gone?
Yes. The content of my Start Page consists of Speed Dial tiles and folders.
With animation disabled, I experienced one instance of all tiles and folders on the Start Page appearing blank. The first time, ever.
Opening a tab for a new Start Page instance brought up a fully functional Start Page and then going back to the tab for the previously blank Start Page, I found it fully functional again.
See @npro 's illustration above.
Alright but they are not gone, they don't disappear, they just turn blank. Right, I understand now.

@d_canard Thanks for the advise. I have found that you do not even need to switch to another tab. In the speed dial, if "Start page navigation" is enabled, you can just click any button there "Bookmarks / History / Notes" and then go back to the Express panel.

Most welcome.
It is good that you have found another workaround. Your suggestion works for me, too.

I was going to publish this same message and I see that there is a post open for 21 days? Couldn't this be solved in a month?
-
@d_canard But, unfortunately, with this approach, when you come back to the Speed Dial, it stays at the top level folder, regarding if you entered some folder inside.
I have another approach. You can hit F5 when in broken state. Then, when you return to the folder, there will be spinning arrow (indicating that it updates the icon of the bookmark) for each bookmark. And while they are updating, the bookmarks are clickable. -
For me I enabled animation in settings and no more blank speed dial icons.
-
the only solution that works for me is downgrading to 6.3.3134.3-1.
One month of blank tiles is enough, better a corrupted profile.
