User Data folder doesn't recover everything
-
Hi Vivaldi,
I lost my internal disk, and everything has been gone....
Luckily I just found "User Data" folder back-uped a year ago, so I overwrote the folder into the Vivalid just installed. Bookmarks and Notes have been recovered, but Extensions, ID and Passwords didn't come back. Why is that so - is it due to the version or anything else? PLEASE help me to go back at lease a year ago.

@ilp0000 Extensions and Passwords are encrypted with the installation ID you lost. You can't restore them in this way.
(Also, importing manually an old user data folder will likely corrupt the new profile due version mismatch) -
@Hadden89 Thanks. Does the Default folder only work for manual transfer? Is there a way to restore the extensions?

@ilp0000 Moving the user data folder will only restore data on the same machine, with the same install. If you reinstalled windows, then there is no way to recover the data in this way. you would need to re-install all the extensions yourself.
If you previously used sync, logging in to sync will remember passwords and which extensions you installed, but the data stored in extensions may only be recovered if each extension supported sync, not all do. (If you use sync, don't copy the profile over as that could interfere with it).

Windows uses a unique key bound to WIndows installation and Windows user to protect sensble data.
Now your issue is that you have to backup complete Windows user profile (data and user registry). Can only done by paid Backup Software (f.ex. AOMEI Backupper or others).

@LonM Thank you.Unfortunately I synced before but deleted the server data. Phew...
@DoctorG Thank you. That looks like a new way I haven't known. Then, at this point, is it a better way to copy only the Default folder?
And what is the best way to backup the whole Vivaldi data? I know sync, but it always bug a bit because it is stored in the server on one side and any sync generally isn't perfectly synced between the tow. Any good idea you have? I feel like I lost one year of my life, and I must be too dependent on Vivaldi.

No. That will not give you the encryption key back and all encrypted data (like f.ex. logins, extension data) is lost.

The best thing would be to export again the bookmark and the notes within vivaldi and do new profile.
Then import again the bookmarks and notes into this.
Finally, remove the old profile in which you copied the old profile and let vivaldi to recreate the other things.
And consider using sync which makes the thing less annoying in future. -
