We will be doing maintenance work on Vivaldi Translate on the 11th of May starting at 03:00 (UTC) (see the time in your time zone).
Some downtime and service disruptions may be experienced.
Thanks in advance for your patience.
A spurious entry appears in the Workspace list, which cannot be deleted or edited.
-
I see an extra entry in the Workspaces list, which is non-editable and non-deletable.
In the screenshot below, I have created two workspaces named Default and FreeCAD. But the top entry in the list named "Vivaldi for Windows | Vivaldi..." is a spurious entry. It can host multiple tabs like a normal workspace. (In the screenshot, there are 5 tabs).
Since I already have a Default workspace, I would like to remove this spurious workspace, but I cannot.
I cannot edit its name or icon, either.
This is very annoying!
How can I get rid of this spurious workspace?
-
@Raindrops1 The spurious entry actually already acts as the default workspace/window, thus not editable.
Only way is to move the tabs from default there and remove theworkspace. So they'll be two again.
-
Thanks for the clarification, and rapid response!
It is OK if the default workspace is named as "Default" and has an uneditable icon.
But there is a bug: The default workspace takes on the name of the currently open tab.
For example, right now, my default workspace looks like this:
That should not happen. The name of the workspace must not keep changing like this, based on which tab is open.
-
@Raindrops1 Not exactly a bug, more a missing implementation. The default WS always take the name of the active tab.
-
But why? What is the use if we get to see the current tab's name there?
It is best if that is labeled as "Default", so that users do not try to edit it.
-
I found another issue: When I select the default workspace, the drop-down list reads "Workspaces", and not the current tab in the default workspace.
This creates the impression that the label tells us that this drop-down list is of workspaces. But in reality, it just shows the name of the selected workspace.
But then if I expand the workspace list, the default workspace shows the name of the active tab!
This is confusing.
(I have selected the Display workspace name option.)
-
To clarify the above comment:
If I select the FreeCAD workspace, the dropdown list shows exactly the same logo and name of the FreeCAD workspace.
But in case of the default workspace, this rule is not followed.
-
It turned out to be even worse: I tried to move the tabs from my "Default" workspace to the real default workspace, I do not get that option at all!
The menu shows two options:
- To this window
- FreeCAD
Thus, there is no option to move the tab to the default workspace.
(The "move to this window" option is not intuitive, because we are talking in terms of workspaces as targets, not windows. I have opened only one window of Vivaldi, and it contains all the workspaces. So if I select this option, in which workspace would it land??)Just to try this theory, I launched a new window of Vivaldi. All the workspaces appear there also, which means that workspaces and windows are not direct alternatives of each other, and therefore they must not be listed together in the same menu.
If I switch back to my original window and move a tab, the menu shows a new entry as shown below, which allows me to move the active tab to that new window.
So logically speaking, the "move tab" menu should not speak of "to this window" as a target-- It gets confusing.
-
@Raindrops1 Ok, I might agree there is a bit of UX bug at this point. But I think the philosophy of the default workspace/window is to keep there anything which hasn't to be sorted in categories so they didn't take in account the fact someone want to move tabs there.
About showing the active tab instead of a Default string could be solved with an option to harmonize the layout.
(Probably is better never show the active tab, so you always know in which workspace you are; default included) -
The designers have provided the option to move the selected tab(s) to the Default workspace. The only problem is that the menu is mislabeled, which creates confusion because of the mix-up between windows and workspaces.
This is especially true when the user has opened multiple Vivaldi windows. When he sees the "move to this window" menu, he starts imagining that the alternative is to move the tab to another window, and gets confused even more.
Fact is, workspaces are common across all windows of Vivaldi. Therefore, regardless of which window you are in, when you move a tab to the Default workspace, it reaches the same place. Therefore, it makes sense to label the menu as Move tab > Workspace > Default.
To sum up, here are the issues and proposed solutions:
Issue-1: In the menu, the Default tab shows the label of the current tab.
Solution: The label should be hard-coded to "Default".Issue-2: In the menu, the default workspace is labeled as "to this window", which is confusing.
Solution: Change the menu to-
Move tab > Workspace > Default. -

Thanks!
The bug VB-99958 is filed.
BTW, am I allowed to raise bugs there, or should I check at the forum first, and only file a bug if directed (as in this case)?
-
@Raindrops1
Hi, you can report directly to the tracker but it make sense to ask if other user can reproduce it in the forum.
We have to close many reports are not bugs but other issues.
This take a lot of time for the tester and developer, this time should be better used for fixing the real bugs.
I check your report but I think this is not a bug but a UI design issue.
I leave it to the developer to decide.Cheers, mib

@Raindrops1 You can check for status perodically here (after few weeks since the report) at this thread https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/27450/what-is-the-status-of-vb-already-reported-bug-issue?page=1 and then head back here to discuss about the actual bug/feature request.

@mib2berlin As long as it is taken care of, I am happy to let it be called "enhancement", or any other name!
