unwanted Kindle Cloud Reader extension installed
-
Hello, I just updated to 6.2 and Kindle Cloud Reader has appeared among extensions alongside the address bar. Yet it does not appear when I go to manage extensions.
Why has this unwanted extension been installed?
Why is it hidden from the extensions list?
And what other unwanted stuff is being installed without my knowledge?Win 11, 6.2.3105.45

Vivaldi doesn't install any extension to anyone, you must have visited some site (amazon?) that added it

@TheInformer said in unwanted Kindle Cloud Reader extension installed:
Why has this unwanted extension been installed?
Vivaldi does not add extensions to the browser.
May be some software on your PC added this to all chromium related browsers or one of your extension you had installed in Vivaldi had fetched it in background.

Kindle Cloud Reader is one of those hidden extensions you can't find by searching the store:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search/Kindle Cloud Reader?_category=extensionsBut it's there:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/kindle-cloud-reader/icdipabjmbhpdkjaihfjoikhjjeneebdLeading me to believe this thing either:
- Gets installed by other extensions (if possible?)
- Gets installed if "Amazon Kindle" is installed as an App
- Gets installed by software running on the system (most likely)
On further investigation, the extension requires a Google account to install, and it installs as an "App" under
vivaldi://apps
The warning indicates old versions of app no longer work in recent Chrome/Chromium browsers. The App automatically installs an extension as well. This extension does not show up in the extensions manager but shows in the extensions toolbar and in
vivaldi://system
I think the black icon indicates an unsupported extension. The Store page says:
Updated: 5 June 2014So that's probably the reason why it's hidden - you're not supposed to install this at all, it's just broken and abandoned

Thanks to all for the info. I don't have kindle on my PC (as far as I know!). I havent bought any kindle books for years either (and never on this PC). I have nothing under vivaldi://apps and dont have any amazon extensions or kindle apps either. Nothing in autoruns...
Still a bit mystified why this popped up as soon as i updated to 6.2...

@TheInformer Did you remove the extension? If so it looks like it also removes the App so it'll be empty now.
My idea is you must've had that App installed at some point.
The thing about these things showing up as "black" extensions is a new thing in 6.2 - or rather Chromium 116.

Yes I did @Pathduck
I only got this PC a couple of months ago and have certainly never installed it here. Can't recall having it on any previous one either, I'm a paperback man.
I probably had it on my phone at some point, but don't have Vivaldi there...
