Browser Mail Clients - Delete Trash Permanently
-
Just installed the most recent version of Vivaldi browser on a new Windows 11 system. So far so good.
I keep one lone Gmail account in th email client portion of the browser. On my old system Vivaldi, which is also current for version, will permanently delete mail when I click the trash can icon. It the disappears from the Inbox and moved to the trash folder
However, despite duplicating all of the settings on the new system, the mail client's trash can is only marking the message to be deleted. It will show in the trash folder but is not removed from the inbox until that trash is deleted.
I'd like to mimic the old system so that when I click the trash icon, it moves the message to trash and also removes it from the inbox. Is there a way to do this? As noted that is how it is working on my other system soon to be retired.
I seem to remember making a change on the older system but that was a few years back. I've been with Vivaldi for some time.

One of the icons controls whether the trash is shown in a particular view; that setting must be enabled in your new install but not your old one.

Let me correct myself, somewhat. It used to be an icon. In the current snapshot at least, it is actually text. There is a line at the top that reads "Show:" followed by text in ovals (or "bubbles" if you prefer that term) to indicate what to show or hide in that view. Options will include Read, Spam, Trash, and so on. Not sure when they changed from icons to text, meaning Stable might or might not have icons still. But whichever - that is what needs to be changed.

Vivaldi 6.2.3105.43 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 1cac4b59129a2beb32b31c6a9936d800380622f6
OS Windows 11 Version 22H2 (Build 22621.2215)I am in the process of moving Vivaldi to a new Win 11 system. I also use the included Mail app (Gmail) periodically.
On my older system that is being retired (Win 10 - not qualified for Win 11) the mail delete icon started life as a 2-part button; mark for delete and permanently delete via a pull down..
Somehow on that system I managed to set it to always permanently delete and mail is moved as desired to the trash folder and disappears from the Inbox.
In the new installation on the Win 11 system the mail delete button is back to the 2-step process. Single click marks it for deletion, and to permanently delete there is a pull down menu option. The pull down removed it from the Inbox and moves to Trash.
I prefer to eliminate this extra step and ALWAYS delete mail permanently with one click. I know I did this before but that was when the mail app first was introduced. I cannot locate anything in any settings option. Does this have to be changed at in the underlying settings?
Thanks

@dmkroslindale Hi - I'm not really sure what you're talking about here?
Are you talking about the Vivaldi Mail client?
https://help.vivaldi.com/mail/mail-get-started/view-and-manage-messages/#Delete_messagesIn Vivaldi the Delete Mail icon looks like this:
And there is no drop-down and far as I know there's never been one?Are you able to show a screenshot of this icon you're talking about?
Are you talking about the Mail app in Windows 11, not Vivaldi at all?

Not the separate mail client at Vivaldi.Net.
This would be the built-in mail client in the browser.
The trash icon, when clicked is only marking messages for deletion. To fully delete you need to use a drop down menu available on the trash icon, or use the keyboard shortcut of Shift-Delete.
On my older system running the same version of the Vivaldi browser, the trash icon within the mail app is performing the Shift-Delete option (perment delete) which is desirable.

@dmkroslindale OK thanks for the clarification.
I have merged this with your post from four days ago about the same issue and move this to the Mail category.
Unfortunately, I can't help much with Mail, as I don't use it.
All I know is that for IMAP accounts, usually mails are marked as deleted before they are actually removed, usually that happens when an "expunge" operation is started, usually on client close. -
RESOLVED
I missed a setting.
Along the top of the mail window pane there are check boxes to determine what displays in the InBox. One of them is Trash. I use the vertical display.
After unchecking "Trash" the Delete button works as desired. Clicking it once moves it to trash and it no longer displays in the Inbox.
Then I can empty trash when desired.
Worth noting that the number of trash messages in the Vivaldi Browser mail client does not match what other mail clients of Gmail reports. It appears that it is storing data locally. If I empty trash using the client then it will sync with the IMAP server.
Thanks
