Vivaldi Browser is Blank

What have you determined is the issue exactly?
I only know that parameter with shortcut was a solution on Majaro or Arch Linux.
And Mint always was a troublemaker with Vivaldi and GPU and drivers, unfortunately. -
No kidding? Goodness... THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH DoctorG!
Very generous of you to assist me with this issue!
All the best to you!

Would you happen to know of a way I may be able to use that command code on the Vivaldi panel icon, say versus the desktop icon by chance?
-
@BeingFrey
I try to check how to change it in Mint.I use much Debian and could not figure out how to edit Mint favorites panel. -
How strange this should happen now. I've been using Vivaldi for years now and never encountered this problem.
-
@BeingFrey I can not test but i think, copy the desktop shortcut to home subfolder
.local/share/applications/
helps. -
@BeingFrey I always had trouble with Mint and its GPU drivers years ago, and i changed to Debian which is much more conservative related to updates and too early releases.
-
Thank you for the suggestion. I may play with Debian here soon

Got the same issue today on Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon after installing updates.
Adding --disable-gpu helps.Rolled back my system using Timeshift.
Further investigation shows that the issue is caused by llvm-toolchain-15 (1:15.0.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.2) update.
llvm-toolchain-15 (1:15.0.7-0ubuntu0.22.04.1) is working just fine.I'm not updating this package for now.
Not sure if this should be reported somehow. -
Thanks so much. This is bonkers. I've used my TimeShift restore to yesterday and turned OFF my automatic updates.
-
Hi all,
I have the same problem under Mint 21.1 after an update yesterday.
Used both commands. Usingvivaldi --disable-gpu
starts without problem and no blanks and problems with using the browser as usual.On the other hand using
vivaldi --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas
is leading to blank screen with icons.@DoctorG said in Vivaldi Browser is Blank:
@BeingFrey Please check Troubleshooting issues.
Running Wayland or X11?
Does it work with starting in shell:
vivaldi --disable-gpu
If yes, try next:
vivaldi --disable-accelerated-2d-canvas

@Vernim Does
vivaldi --use-gl=desktop
help? -
@DoctorG yes it does. I've just changed the shortcut as you wrote on the previous page.
Can be fixed if you start Vivaldi by desktop shortcut:
- Create Shortcut to Program
- Select tab "Program"
- In field "Program" select
/usr/bin/vivaldi-stable
- In Field "Arguments" add
--use-gl=desktop %U
- Confirm with "OK"
That is the shortcut you need to start Vivaldi.
Perhaps an other Linux user here in forum can you tell more which internal setting could work without such desktop shortcut.
-
@Vernim Nice to read that my advice could help you.
-
For some users Mint/Ubuntu is such a mess with its OpenGL drivers. Sad, as such causes trouble with Vivaldi browser.
-
@fifonik Yes i will try to downgrade that soon
Thank you so much for this investigation. I thought my brand new GPU was about to cause me distress lmao.
PopOS user btw, so yeah looks like a lot of Ubuntu based distros are gonna have this issueEdit: It doesn't appear I have that particular package installed on my system, but it must've been something I updated last night.
However, it seems my Timeshift partition has been corrupted for a good while and I wasn't made aware of it so I cannot roll back to yesterday lol. I guess for now I'm using the special command until this is fixed. -
@fifonik Thanks for investigating.
-
Bug report (not by me).
-
@MrBlueSky Thanks for hint

@DoctorG I'm having this same issue with browser opening as a blank window, and as you said in past answers, now it's working when I open using "--use-gl=desktop". You also said in past answers that it could be graphics driver issue on our(users) side, and I think this might be true because my Google Chrome browser was running with same issue and i solved it running with the same flag. I'm using OS Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, do you have any tip or advice about what i should do to try to find and solve any possible driver issue?
