Some websites are still bypassing pop-ups to a new tab
-
Hi all
One day I went to a website that somehow still uses pop-up ads. I forgot where it was, so here is one of the samples of website I tested that still opens ads to a new tab. Is that considered pop-ups?

You can check here. Also, I checked that disable pop up is already activated in chrome://settings.
Thanks

@cinlung Hi - you can't really stop a site from opening a new tab when you interact with the site, like clicking in the search field.
An "unwanted popup" is defined as a Javascript triggered window that appears without user interacting with the page. When you click on the site, you are interacting with it and the browser cannot stop it from opening new tabs.
The classic definition of a popup was the old type of popup window we had 15-20 years ago on crap browsers like Internet Explorer. Fortunately, this type of popup is hardly used by scammers anymore, as they are blocked effectively in all modern browsers.
From a quick look at that site, it's a complete scam anyway and there is no way that site will ever let you watch "free movies". I suggest you steer well clear of that site.
I have changed the link so we do not give these lowlife scumbags a better search engine score.

@Pathduck Thanks for the explanation. After further checking, it is probably coded as newly opened tabs. It is just they manage to put unseen layer that will call the tab opening to a certain site. I am not sure if vivaldi can detect this layer and prevent it from being injected into the page to trigger tab opening.

@cinlung You'd need a strong adblocker to handle that site. Unfortunately Vivaldi's built in is not meant to deal with such scumbag sites. It is meant for blocking ads and trackers, not for blocking nasty sites that maliciously circumvent any measures against them.
With uBlock Origin I don't get the "popups" so I guess it blocks some scripts that trigger them.
Like I said, forget about watching "free movies" on that site. Some sites are just better left alone.

This is what I'm using currently.

@Pathduck Thanks
I used a combo of Vivaldi and Ublock Origin and it works for now. Also, hopefully you guys can still be under the YT radar with the current 3 strikes ad block in YT.

What's this exactly?

@Pathduck Seems a new google policy: if an adblock is detected few times, the whole content may be locked with an obscure form to unlock it again.. Unsure yet how the things work but I really might to consider alternative clients then
@cinlung I past I combined ublock origin with a dedicated popup blocker like this - but there is a chance of blocking legit popups too.
