Vivaldi instant crash after updating to windows 11
-
I updated to windows 11 last night and when I went to browse the internet this morning, I found that vivaldi was instantly crashing. Sometime the "wait for vivaldi to close" message will show up, but often it doesn't.
Things I Have Tried
- Clearing Sessions folder
- renaming Default directory to Default.old to have it create a new one.
- reinstalling 3035.84 version
- uninstalling and installing the 3035.75 version
- running as admin
- restarted PC

@IVDCCXI
Hi, make sure no Vivaldi process is still running in the task manager.
Edit the desktop shortcut from Vivaldi and add:
--disable-gpu
to the Target field.https://www.digitalcitizen.life/shortcut-arguments-parameters-windows/
This disable hardware acceleration and possible issues with Vivaldi and your GPU/driver configuration.
Cheers, mib
EDIT: If you have a Windows N or KN version you have to update your Media packages, or install it. -
@mib2berlin
I tried this, but I didn't notice any differences. For confirmation I have posted a screenshot of my shortcut targetNote:
I changed hardware acceleration to off just yesterday for a different reason(my caret was leaving artifacts) turning it off did fix that issue
I am also using Windows Home
-
@IVDCCXI Hi, what OS did you upgrade from?
Did you also perhaps change Vivaldi from a 32-bit to a 64-bit install at some point in the process?
Try to rename the entire
User Data
folder.
Make sure there are novivaldi.exe
running when you do that.Also if that don't work try a complete uninstall, making sure the Vivaldi install folder is empty. Make a backup of your profile
Default
folder first. After Uninstall open Regedit and go to:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Vivaldi
Delete the key (folder).
Then do a reinstall.After that you might be able to salvage important files like Bookmarks, Logins, Notes etc from your old profile.
-
@IVDCCXI
Hm, the shortcut is correct.
I am a bit out of ideas, you can try to move the complete Users Data folder to a save place.
The profile can have issues but sometimes the whole install is broken.
If Vivaldi start then I would not sync or install any extension.
A user report the tampermonkey extension break his install completely, for example.Cheers, mib

@Pathduck
I tried renaming the User Data folder and reinstalling but that did not work.As for regedit: in "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software" there is no vivaldi key/dir. I looked in all directories named 'software' that we in the other HKEY's and did not see anything named vivaldi
I then cleared the "local/vivaldi" dir and installed. It is still not working.
I upgraded from windows 10 latest update Home dist.

@IVDCCXI said in Vivaldi instant crash after updating to windows 11:
As for regedit: in "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software" there is no vivaldi key/dir.
Hmm, might explain something I guess?
That key should be there after install.Do you have a key under here then?
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
Running explicitly as Administrator should be avoided - if you've done that there might be some obscure permission issues that could be really tricky to figure out. The installer will prompt for elevation with UAC if needed.
AFAIK you don't need elevation to install the standard "Per User" install.
This is also why the key should exist under HKCU\Software because the user has write permissions there.The "All Users" install will prompt through UAC because it needs to write to Program Files.
A Standalone install should not need elevation (depending where you install...) -
@mib2berlin
I tried this and it still won't start I don't have tampermonkey either. -
@Pathduck
Now that I have reinstalled the key is in there@Pathduck said in Vivaldi instant crash after updating to windows 11:
After Uninstall open Regedit and go to:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\VivaldiI believe that the uninstall removed the key.
-
@IVDCCXI Does it properly create the User Data and Default folders?
If you check Task Manager, does the process launch at all? Are there leftover/zombie processes?
And a very important point - are you running any security software on your machine? A bad or overly aggressive antivirus software might well cause this to happen if it doesn't recognize Vivaldi.
-
@Pathduck
when opened there 5 vivaldi processes. They stay for a few seconds and then it goes to 8 vivaldi processes. then a few of them terminate and a WerFault and wermgr task are created and terminated within a split second. then after a few more seconds the remaining vivaldi processes terminateI am also not using any third-party anti-virus
-
@IVDCCXI I have no idea. Something on your system is killing Vivaldi, you'll have to dig deeper I guess.
If it was a general crash issue with Win11 Home and Vivaldi we'd see a lot more reports. We do get a lot of crash issues here, but users are usually able to launch their browser first
My go-to tool for figuring out what goes on in the OS with processes is ProcMon:

@Pathduck
I got it! the disable full screen optimizations option was checked. unchecking it resolved it. -
@IVDCCXI What option is that? Never heard of it and can't find it.
-
@rseiler
Its an option under the compatibility tab on the application settings -
@IVDCCXI Oh, I thought you meant in Vivaldi. That tab is a real blast from the past. Good thing you found it, because no one was going to think of that. I wasn't sure what it meant:
-
@IVDCCXI
Hi, I am glad you have it!
I would never thought about such a setting can crash Vivaldi.
Noted in my big book of issues with third party settings/software.Cheers, mib
